PASTORAL MESSAGE

Among the many feasts that the Orthodox Church celebrates in the month of October is the com-memoration of the 7th Ecumenical Council (Sunday October 12th). In the 8th century the Church found herself waging an internal struggle over the use of Icons in the Church. We often take for granted the beauty and majesty that Icons share with us. However, at this point in the history of The Church many were opposed to and prohibited the use of Icons. Fortunately for The Church, those in support of Icons were victorious at the 7th Ecumenical Council, and the use of Icons was once again restored. Today we venerate Icons, we place them in our homes, and we afford them great respect and honor. We would not dare do anything to damage or injure an Icon. But what about the greatest, most exquisite Icon ever created? Do we afford the same honor and respect to this Icon? “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man according to Our image [εἰκόνα or Icon], according to our likeness.’…So God made man according to the image [εἰκόνα or Icon] of God He made him; male and female He made them” (Genesis 1.26, 27). We, as human beings are living Icons. Most importantly, we are not Icons of saints or of angels, but we are Icons of God. We will cross ourselves and kiss the Icon of a saint or an angel, refusing to do it any harm or dishonor. Yet, we are not always so careful with our fellow living Icons. St. John of Damascus defends the use of Icons in the church by saying, “The honor given to the image [Icon] passes to the [one de-picted]” (Defense against Those Who Attack the Holy Image). In the same way any dishonor is passed along as well. If we truly understand that each human being is an Icon of God, how can we show cruelty or speak ill of another? By St. John of Damascus’ argument, to treat our fellow humans with disrespect or malice is to treat God, whom we depict, with disrespect or malice. The same logic applies to our treatment of the Icon we carry within ourselves. Sin has the power to obscure the Icon of God within us. It is as if every act of greed, or gossip, or anger, or any temptation which might prevail over us, covers up a portion of our Icon. Over time, a life lived in sin will result in the hiding of our Icon. It will always be with us, yet our actions might cover it so completely that others have a hard time discerning its presence. Fortunately, The Church pro-vides us with tools to once again uncover the Icon of God within us: prayer, fasting, communion and confession. As we remember the vindication of the Holy Icons and the 7th Ecumenical Council we must at-tempt to live out its teachings. If we do not strive to see the Icon of God in each and every human being, and to proudly display the Icon of God within ourselves, the commemoration of the 7th Ecumenical Council becomes a footnote in our past and the Icons of The Church nothing more than pretty decorations.

+ Fr. Panagiotis

Parish Council News October, 2014

I wish to extend our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Christy Gouletas and her hard-working festival committee for a great job in organizing and facilitating our Greek food festival in early September. Thanks also to all who contributed their time and effort in adding to its success, along with the various vendors who donated food and supplies. As of this writing, the final financial results have yet to be tabulated, but as important as the monetary result, was the fellowship and goodwill generated throughout the community. It was great to see so many pa-rishioners of all ages working together toward a common goal. The parish council has several standing committees that have ample room for non-council members to join. We are always looking for ambitious people will-ing to get involved with some aspect of the administrative life of the parish. If you have time and talents that you wish to share in areas of stewardship, out-reach, administration, ushering, maintenance, technology, or events, please con-tact me at [email protected] or Father Panagiotis at [email protected] and we'll get you involved. The parish council, at the encouragement of Father Panagiotis, is forming a stra-tegic planning committee for the purpose of developing a vision for the future of SS. Peter & Paul. This is in its very early stages of development, but we hope to get participation and input from a broad cross section of our community in build-ing a roadmap to our future. I will keep you posted as this project progresses. The Uniform Parish Regulations call for each parish to have at least two parish assemblies each year. We have traditionally done these in the spring and fall. Our fall assembly take place immediately after Liturgy on Sunday, November 16th. These meetings typically take less than one hour, so please make plans to attend and participate in this important aspect of parish life. As always, I wish you God's continued blessings. Jim Santos Parish Council President
