most well-traveled leaders in history, visiting 129 countries. • Helped end Communist rule in Poland
and all of Europe. • Improved relationships between different
religions by calling for Christians, Jews and Muslims to live together peacefully

Born 1st century AD Died 65 AD• 1 of the 12 Apostles of Jesus, he
converted many in the Middle East and Arabia to Christianity.
• Patron saint of hope and impossible causes.
• Originally named Judas but changed name to Jude to avoid confusion with Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.
• Believed to have been martyred in Syria - along with the apostle Simon the Zealot- and buried under St. Peter’s Basilica.
Born 18 BC in Galilee Died Unknown (Assumed into Heaven)• Known as the “Blessed Virgin” and
“Queen Mother,” she is the mother of Jesus Christ.
• The angel Gabriel appeared to tell her she would conceive Him by the power of the Holy Spirit.
• Born without Original Sin and never sinned during her life.
Born 1 AD in modern-day Syria Died 64 AD• 1 of the 12 Apostles and the 1st pope
and bishop who helped establish the Roman Church.
• Witnessed transfiguration of Jesus and walked on water but started to sink as his faith faltered.
• Denied Christ 3 times but professed his love for Him and was forgiven.
• Patron saint of fishermen.
Born in Turkey Died 84 AD• 1 of 4 authors of the Gospels in the New
Testament.• Forgiveness, mercy, social justice and
love for the poor were the focus of his gospel writings.
• Patron saint of artists & physicians.• Thought to be the only writer of the
New Testament that wasn’t a Jew (most likely a Gentile instead).
• A follower of the Apostle Paul, ultimately to martyrdom.
Born about 5 BC in Judea Died about 33 AD• Jewish prophet/priest who began his
public ministry around 30 AD.• He spoke about the coming of Jesus and
God’s final judgment to large crowds in Judea and along the Jordan River.
• Baptized many people, most notably Jesus, at which point the heavens opened and God spoke:
Referring to him, Jesus said “…you are Peter, and upon this rock
I will build my church.”

Born 5 AD in Asia Minor | Died 67 AD• Early evangelist and important figure in
the early Church.• Persecuted Christians after the
Resurrection but converted to Christianity after Jesus appeared to him on the road to Damascus.
• Traveled thousands of miles around the Mediterranean Sea, establishing churches & preaching the Gospel.
• Considered an Apostle even though he was not one of the original Twelve.
Born 1st century AD in ItalyDied Unknown
• Roman Centurion (soldier) who, during the Crucifixion, pierced Jesus’ side with what is often called the “Holy Lance.”
• Blood flowing from Jesus then fell upon his eyes, curing his blindness.
• Converted to Christianity and became a monk, then martyred and killed by Romans when he refused to flee or renounce his faith.

• Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the grandmother of Jesus.
• From the “House of David,” the ancestral line prophesied from which Christ would be born.
• Patron saint of unmarried women, housewives, women in labor and grandmothers.
• Prayed to God that if blessed with a child, they would dedicate their child to the service of the Lord...and then came the miracle of Mary!

• An immoral sinner, Jesus cast out 7 demons when they first met.
• Became a disciple of His, staying by His side during His public ministry, His crucifixion and His burial.
• Running to His tomb, she was the first person to witness the Resurrection of Jesus.
• The prime example of the mercy and grace of God, and patron saint of women, converts and repentant sinners.
Born 1st century BC in BethlehemDied Nazareth • Husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus,
and considered His legal guardian and foster father.
• Patron saint of workers and thought of as true role model for all fathers.
• Pope Pius IX made him protector of the Catholic Church.
• Prime example of faithful believer, receiving grace at his time of death.
• He died in the presence of both Jesus and Mary.

Born 330 | Died 405
• A sinful thief and gang member, he turned to God and converted to Christianity.
• After a botched robbery attempt, he hid in a monastery with monks who influenced him into changing his life, eventually becoming a monk and powerful spiritual leader.
• Patron saint of non-violence, he fought inner turmoil but outwardly showed calm, peace & God’s grace.
• He died a martyr, slain while protecting his monastery.

• Patron saint of music, musicians and poets.
• Married a pagan - whom she converted to Christianity – and he respected her wish to remain pure by showing him the Angel of God.
• During her wedding, it is said that she “sang in her heart to God.”
• She converted many people to Christianity in her lifetime and was finally martyred after many earlier attempts on her life.

Born 342 in Dalmatia Died 420• Patron saint of students and translators
who labored to translate the Bible from Hebrew and Greek.
• Converted to Christianity after living recklessly and sinfully as a young man.
• Witty and sarcastic, which angered some, he was still very faithful and once said “When the stomach is full, it is easy to talk of fasting.”
Born 270 in Turkey | Died 343
• Made pilgrimage to Holy Land to walk the same land as Jesus had but during Christian persecution he was exiled and imprisoned.
• Generous, protective and caring, he was the patron saint of children, sailors, merchants and repentant thieves.
• Original “Santa Claus” for his reputation of secretly giving gifts to those less fortunate.
• His grave is thought to possess supernatural healing powers.
The friendship that can cease has never been real.

Born 287 in Egypt | Died 305
• Born into nobility, she excelled in education & was a gifted student.
• Had a powerful, impactful vision of the Virgin Mary and Jesus.
• Her emperor Maxentius wanted her to renounce her faith by having her debate 50 pagan orators (many of whom she converted on the spot).
• Her confidence, strong convictions and unceasing commitment to God led her to be tortured, imprisoned & put to death as a martyr.

Born 283 in Sicily | Died 304
• Born rich and with many suitors, but was faithful to God alone.
• Wanted to donate her inheritance to the poor, saying “Give now…whatever you intended to give away at your death.”
• God helped her fend off those trying to inflict harm but she eventually died a martyr.
• Though her eyes had been removed, at her burial they were miraculously restored, making her the patron saint of the blind.
Born 315 in Jerusalem | Died 386
• Bishop of Jerusalem who spent much of his life fighting heretics.
• Was exiled for 16 years by then Bishop Acacius, who falsely claimed he had sold church relics.
• His faith helped him forgive and his writing and teaching focused on love and the healing power of forgiveness.
• Created religious instruction called “Catecheses,” used for students leading up to their Baptism.
Born 330 in Turkey | Died 379
• A lawyer and teacher who then turned his life toward serving God.
• Became a monk, theologian and supporter of the Nicene Creed (our “Profession of Faith”).
• Powerful Archbishop of Caesarea who fought evil & corruption anywhere he saw it.
• Known for his personal charity, he used his own income and wealth to build monasteries and help the poor, hungry and underprivileged.

Born 256 in France | Died 288 • Courageous member of the Roman army
where he hid his Christianity, quietly converting many non-believers to the faith.
• Survived an execution attempt by Roman Emperor’s archers but later martyred during the Diocletian’s persecution of Christians.
• Warned Emperor of the repercussions of his sinfulness, who then had him clubbed to death.
• Patron saint of soldiers, archers, athletes and those wanting to die a holy death.
Born 226 in Italy | Died Feb. 14, 269
• Priest who refused to bow to and worship pagan gods.
• While under arrest & imprisoned, healed the judge’s blind daughter by laying his hands over her eyes.
• He then converted and baptized Judge Asterius & his entire family.
• Tried to convince Roman emperor Claudius II to embrace Christianity but was condemned to death and martyred instead.
• Patron saint of love, engaged couples and happy marriages.

Born 354 in Algeria | Died 430• Doctor of the Church and an
important Christian thinker.• Sinful and reckless in his youth but his
mother, St. Monica, prayed that he’d grow closer to God.
• As bishop of Hippo, he fought against any branch of Christianity that promoted false teachings.
Born 675 in England | Died 754
• Seen as the greatest missionary since St. Paul, he converted countless pagans to Christianity throughout Germany.
• Convinced non-believers by splitting a tree in four parts in the shape of a Cross.
• Legend says he founded the tradition of a Christmas tree’s connection to the birth of Christ.
Born 958 in Ukraine | Died 1015
• Was a prince & pagan who conquered and ruled the vast Kievan Rus’ Federation.
• In order to marry Anna, the sister of Emperor Basil II, he converted to Christianity in 988 and was baptized.
• Brought Christianity to Russia where he built churches and monasteries, visited with the poor and gave generously to charity.
• Died as a martyr from illness in battle.
Born 1118 in London | Died 1170
• Chancellor of England who was close friends with King Henry II.
• Lived quite extravagantly before becoming a priest, once bringing 200 soldiers, hawks, dogs, and even monkeys on a trip!
• Appointed Archbishop of Canterbury but steadfastly refused to carry out any orders that conflicted with the Church.
For the name of Jesus and the protection of the Church, I am
ready to embrace death.
Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance.
Born 1181 in Italy | Died 1226• Son of a wealthy businessman, he
originally lived lavishly and wanted personal glory more than salvation.
• Relinquished his wealth and dedicated himself to God, leading the Church away from corruption and scandal and back toward Christ.
• Founded the Franciscan order and designed the first Nativity scene.
• The patron saint of animals and the environment.
The Church is like a great ship…Our duty is not to abandon ship,
but to keep her on her course.
There is no saint without a past, no sinner without a future.

• Patron saint of Ireland.• Taken by Irish pirates and forced to
become a shepherd.• In a dream, God told him to go to the
sea, and when he did, he was rescued by sailors.
• Converted many Irish to Christianity using three-leaf clovers to teach the Holy Trinity.
Born 400 in Italy | Died 461
• First pope to be called “the Great.”• A doctor of the church and first to
consider Christology - the study of who Jesus was as a person.
• Explained Christ’s “two natures” (i.e. how Jesus could be both human and divine), saying it was “with neither confusion nor division.”
• Fought heresy and those who worked to discredit the Church teachings.
• Convinced Attila the Hun to spare Italy from attack.
Born 907 in Prague | Died 935
• Duke of Bohemia (then pronounced King after his death), he received a proper Christian education by his grandmother.
• A faithful and devout man who set up Christian laws and principles as the basic foundation of the land.
• Fought anti-Christian dissent within his own family and was martyred at the hands of his own brother.

• Prolific writer with legal training who became a “doctor of the Church.”
• Considered 1 of the 4 “Fathers of the Church” and often referred to as the “Father of Christian Worship.”
• Credited with starting the first large-scale mission of converting pagans to Christianity.
• Patron saint of teachers, students and singers.

Born Nov. 2, 1755 in Austria | Died 1793
• Italian monk who founded 12 communities for monks in Italy.
• His “Rule of Saint Benedict” contains guidelines for those who follow Christ, and focus on obedience, moderation and humility.
• A special medal Cross bears his name and is used by Christians for power over evil, sometimes using it alongside the Rosary.
I am not keeping silent, nor am I hiding the signs and wonders that
were shown to me by the Lord…
Idleness is an enemy of the soul.

Born 1195 in Portugal | Died 1231
• Catholic Priest and Franciscan Friar who was gifted as a preacher in his explanation of scripture.
• Known for his deep knowledge and unwavering devotion to the poor and sick.
• Fought tirelessly against heresy, receiving the nickname “Hammer of the Heretics.”
• Patron saint of lost things, lost and oppressed people and travelers.
Born 1412 in France | Died 1431 • The patron saint of soldiers.• Brave French soldier who defeated the
English at the Siege of Orleans.• Holy & faithful, she was inspired by God
to fight for King Charles VII’s right to the French crown.
• Saw visions from heaven & heard divine voices, which helped guide her through her religious mission.
Born 1348 in FranceDied 1376 or 1379 (unconfirmed)
• Born with a red cross on his chest, he was devout from a young age.
• Gave his possessions to the poor and moved to Rome to care for the sick, perform healing miracles and help cure those with the plague.
• Wrongfully accused of being a spy and was put in jail where he died.
• Patron saint of dogs, invalids and contagious diseases.
Born 1347 in Italy | Died 1380
• Selfless servant of the poor & sick, often donating clothes and visiting homes.
• Along with St. Teresa of Avila, honored as the first women Doctors of the Church.
• Sacrificed throughout her life and fasted so often, her appearance became disfigured.
• Convinced Pope Gregory XI to rightfully return the papacy to Rome.

Born 1225 in Sicily | Died 1274• Priest, philosopher, Dominican Friar &
doctor of the Church- his family had him locked up to prevent him from becoming a priest.
• Summarized Christian teachings in Summa Theologica, where he detailed 5 powerful arguments for the existence of God.

Born 1478 in London | Died 1535
• Highly regarded lawyer and politician in British Parliament who was close with King Henry VIII.
• Insisted his daughters get the same level of education as his sons, which was highly unusual at the time.
• Refused to betray his faith, even as King Henry threatened to fire and imprison him.
• Patron saint of lawyers and difficult marriages.
Born 1469 in England | Died 1535• Cardinal and intellectual academic who
became Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.
• Demanding preacher and orator who brought the scholar Erasmus to Cambridge.
• Along with St. Thomas More, incurred the wrath of King Henry VIII.
• Imprisoned in the Tower of London and died a martyr.
Born 1491 in Spain | Died 1556• A great spiritual leader who taught
prayers and meditations, saying “Act as if everything depended on you; trust as if everything depended on God.”
• Served in the military until struck by a cannonball, leaving him with permanent limp.
• Became a priest and theologian, starting the religious order “Society of Jesus” (or Jesuits), noted for their holy missions and charitable works.
Born 1193 in Italy | Died 1253
• Wealthy, but embraced a life of poverty instead, and set aside food from her family’s table to help feed the hungry.
• Follower of St. Francis of Assisi, she founded the Order of Poor Ladies.
• The patron saint of TV because when she was sick, she could see and hear Mass on her wall!
• Warded off attacking soldiers by praying with the Blessed Sacrament.
Born 1221 in Italy | Died 1274• Bishop, doctor of the church and
theologian, he was considered one of the greatest spiritual philosophers of the Middle Ages.
• Firmly believed that using both reason and faith, he could prove the existence of God.
• Led the Franciscan Order as minister general for 17 years.

Born 1579 in Peru | Died 1639
• Illegitimate son of a Spanish man and freed slave, he was ridiculed for being of mixed race.
• The law forbade him joining a religious order, so he volunteered to do menial tasks instead.
• Once allowed to join the Dominicans, he showed great passion and patience caring for the sick.
• Patron saint of mixed race and public health workers.
Born 1815 in Italy | Died 1888
• Poor shepherd who became a priest, teacher and writer.
• Focused on helping children and the less fortunate, saying “Always think well of everyone & be ready to help others. Do this and you will be happy.”
• Developed the “Salesian Preventive System,” which used love rather than punishment for helping troubled and delinquent children.
Born 1890 in Italy | Died 1902
• Known for her purity, grace and courage at such as young age, she died from injuries after being attacked.
• She forgave her attacker but appeared to him in prison. He admitted his sin, repented and begged forgiveness from her mother.
• Upon his release, he devoted himself to monastic life and her beatification.
• Youngest Roman Catholic saint and the patron saint of youth, young women, purity and victims of violence.
Everything…could be a prayer, if it were offered to God.

• Converted tens of thousands of people back to Christianity during the Protestant Reformation.
• Wrote pamphlets about the true teachings of the Catholic Church and wrote letters to many people to help guide their faith.
• Taught that ordinary people, not just priests and nuns, could achieve holiness in their daily lives.
• Patron saint of Catholic writers and journalists.

• Franciscan friar and priest who was widely ridiculed throughout his life for being dim-witted and odd.
• However, he was kind and lighthearted and often caught up in his vivid visions of God, which sent him into fits of laughter.
• Was prone to the miracle of levitation, once even in front of the Pope!
• Patron saint of pilots and people suffering mental handicaps.

Born 1850 in Italy | Died 1917
• Became a member of the ‘Daughters of the Sacred Heart’ religious order at age 18.
• Sent to the USA by Pope Leo XIII to open schools, orphanages and hospitals for poor and less fortunate Italian-Americans.
• Patron saint of immigrants and missionaries.
• She was the first US citizen to be canonized (made a saint).
Born 1515 in Spain | Died 1582• Nun and author of spiritual classics
such as The Way of Perfection.• Lost her mother at a young age and
devoted her prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
• Became one of first women given the title of “Doctor of the church.”
• Influential member of the “Carmelite Order.”
Born 1842 in Italy | Died 1857• According to his teacher John Bosco,
he devoted his heart and soul to God, making him eligible for sainthood.
• Upon his First Communion, he promised himself “My friends shall be Jesus and Mary” and “Death rather than sin.”
• He actively worked to become a saint, believing that it is God’s will.
Born 1869 in Sudan | Died 1947• As a girl, she was kidnapped, tortured,
sold into slavery and forced to convert to Islam.
• But her spirit was strong and once freed, she converted to Catholicism and joined the convent.
• Despite her suffering, she still forgave her captors, saying that she would not have become a Christian if not for them.
We need no wings to go in search of Him, but have only to look upon
Him present within us.

• Shocked and moved by the poor living conditions of Native Americans in the Southwestern U.S…
• …and after discussing with Pope Leo XIII, he suggested she become a missionary to help!
• Patron saint of racial justice and philanthropy.
Born 1905 in Poland | Died 1938
• Nun who felt a calling to religious life at just 7 years old.
• Experienced conversations with Jesus, earning her the name “Apostle of Divine Mercy.”
• Her devotion gave inspiration to people worldwide to ask for God’s mercy, trust in His mercy and show others mercy.
• According to the Vatican, having direct quotes of her conversations with Jesus set her apart from most other visionaries.
Born 1908 (him), 1910 (her) – PortugalDied 1919 (him), 1920 (her)
• Shepherd children who witnessed apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is why “Our Lady of Fátima” is now also given to the Blessed Virgin.
• Practiced self-sacrifice & fasting at young ages and tried saving sinners after seeing a vision of Hell.
• Pope Francis canonized them exactly 100 years after the first apparition appeared to them.
• They’re the Catholic Church’s youngest non-martyred Saints.
Born 1920 in Poland | Died 2005• Pope from 1978 to 2005 and one of the
most well-traveled leaders in history, visiting 129 countries.
• Helped end Communist rule in Poland and all of Europe.
• Improved relationships between different religions by calling for Christians, Jews and Muslims to live together peacefully.
• Was 1st Pope to enter and pray in a mosque.

• From a large, poor family who worked on behalf of, and gave refuge to, the poor.
• He opposed modernizing the church and his personal motto was, “Renew all things in Christ.”
• Decreed age of First Communion be changed from 12 to 7 years old.
• Performed miracles such as having a paralyzed child run!
I was born poor, I have lived poor, and I wish to die poor.
Social justice cannot be attained by violence. Violence kills what it

• After becoming a Priest, served as chaplain and stretcher-carrier in Italian army’s medical corp.
• Was a firm believer in equality, advocated for human rights and was committed to world peace.
• Known affectionately as the “Good Pope,” he loved children and was recognized for his humanitarian work during WWII helping those persecuted by the Nazis.
Born 1891 in Germany | Died 1942
• The patron saint of Europe and of martyrs.
• Born to a Jewish family but as a teenager stopped believing in God.
• Upon reading St. Teresa of Ávila’s autobiography, she converted to Catholicism and became a Carmelite nun.
• She helped others through their pain and suffering up until she herself died at Auschwitz, a Nazi concentration camp.
• Priest, friar and mystic who decided by age 5 to dedicate his life to God.
• His 5 spiritual rules were: daily Communion, weekly Confession, examining one’s conscience, meditation & spiritual reading.
• Experienced “stigmata” (body marks & pain in same areas of Christ’s crucifixion wounds) and spiritual gifts such as healing powers, levitation, miracles & prophecy.
Born 1910 in Macedonia | Died 1997
• Nun, charity worker and caregiver to the world’s most vulnerable in the slums of Calcutta, India.
• Founded “Missionaries of Charity” and served the homeless, hungry and hopeless by opening schools, clinics and orphanages.
• Always tried to convert the person she was serving to Christianity, even though she admitted she sometimes doubted her own faith.
Born 1894 in Poland | Died 1941
• Franciscan priest who had a strong devotion to Mary and the Immaculate Conception.
• During World War II, he stayed in the monastery to help the wounded & protected Jews from persecution.
• At Auschwitz concentration camp, he volunteered to die in place of a condemned man, dying as a martyr.
