Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Have you ever heard the term vision quest? How about the term heroes’ journey? These are terms used to describe trials that people put themselves through in order to discover who they really are and what they are called to do. These can be very powerful events in people’s lives. Heroes’ journey is the term that Joseph Campbell uses for this kind of testing. Campbell had a great influence on George Lucas as Lucas wrote Star Wars. Luke Skywalker went on one of these journeys in the early movies. He is tested so that he might discover who he is and embrace his mission. Ok I’m done geeking out to Star Wars! This week, we are challenged - by the example of Jesus - to go on a sort of vision quest in preparation of our mission. This vision quest, this heroes’ journey, is called Lent.

Lent is a time for us to purposely place ourselves in temptation so that we can remember or find out; but probably at best - decide - who we really are. It is the time when we, like Jesus, are faced with a choice. Who will be the center, the focus of my life? Will it be me or will it be God? Maybe that seems too simplistic. It is not. In each of the three temptations Jesus faced in Luke’s Gospel today, He is faced with a choice. Will He serve Himself, His body, His ego or will He serve God? This is another one of those moments where Jesus undergoes something that He really doesn’t have to; but, He does anyway - for us. He does it because we NEED to do it. We need to make this choice between ourselves and God in order to fulfill our mission. God is always about the mission.

So let me ask you this. What are you doing this Lent? How will it be different from the other 40 days of the year? It needs to be different. Whatever you are doing, whether giving up something or doing something extra, make sure that it is something that asks you to choose between your body, your ego, your desires, and God. Make it a vision quest. Make it a heroes’ journey. Let yourself be tested by what you do so that you can choose God. Make it real, because the mission God has for you is real.

Peace and Love,

Fr. Matt

The 2016 Parish Share Goal for St. John is $24,132. This year, we will be reporting our progress differ-ently in the bulletin. Payments made to the Parish Share using pledge cards and PSP/EMR envelopes will be recorded as PSP Payments-To-Date. our neighbors in FaithThiS LenT: CeLebraTe JubILee year

THrougH WorkS oF MerCyOften the word “mercy” is associated with forgiveness or the removal of a well-deserved punishment. But in this year of mercy, it is good for us to reflect upon the broader vision laid out by Jesus: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” (Matthew 25:35–36). The Church teaches that there are seven corporal and spiritual works of mercy. This Lent, put a work of mercy into practice each week. Here are some ideas:Week One: Feed the hungry. Buy gift cards or meals for people standing at street corners. Make a meal and deliver it to your local Catholic Worker house. Volunteer at a food pantry, food bank, or soup kitchen. Send a donation to Catholic Charities.Week Two: Shelter the homeless. The world is filled with refu-gees fleeing war, persecution, and brutalization. Is there a refu-gee resettlement office nearby? Ask what help is needed.Week Three: Clothe the naked. Go through your closets and storage, and collect clothing, furniture, and bedding to donate to shelters for abused women and children, or the Salvation Army.Week Four: Comfort the afflicted. Think of someone in your parish, neighborhood, or at work who is going through difficult times. Invite a widower to dinner, send a note of encouragement to someone in a tough situation, or offer a sympathetic ear.Week Five: Bear wrongs patiently. No one likes being unjustly accused or unfairly treated, but it’s easy to let petty insults ruin a day. This week, pray for grace to let go of the little things, from social media jabs to rude drivers and poor customer service.Week Six: Instruct the ignorant. Too often we approach conflict-ing points of view by assuming our own rightness and everyone else’s wrongness. This week, approach such conflicts by seek-ing to understand why your opponent holds a differing opinion. Beginning with mutual respect makes it more likely that you will be an effective witness.Week Seven: Forgive offenses willingly. Pride hampers both sides of the forgiveness equation. This week, practice humility both by apologizing without delay, and by graciously accepting apologies from others when they are offered.
