Saint Teresa of Calcutta

1910-1997

My dear parishioners, Today, Holy Mother Church rejoices in the canoniza-tion of Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Born Anjezë (Agnes) Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910 in Skopje, Mace-donia (Albanian descent), she entered the Irish Sisters of Loretto and took final vows on May 14, 1937. While in India, she began her own religious community called the Missionaries of Charity on October 7, 1950. She died on September 5, 1997 at the age of 87. The Mis-sionaries of Charity take the same vows as most reli-gious which are poverty, chastity and obedience, but they also take a fourth vow, of service of the poorest of the poor. Mother Teresa had an ability to see Christ pre-sent in those others would not even see. For her, each and every life was precious. She established houses all over the world to serve the poor. In New York City, she established houses for men dying of AIDS, for pregnant mothers, for battered women and for homeless men. At the time of her death in 1997, there were 602 houses worldwide ran by her sisters. She always believed that God would provide and trusted that God would ensure the work of serving the poor. Her joy for the Gospel of Jesus Christ inspired countless millions, especially the large core of volunteers who assisted at the houses she established. Although the sisters did a large part of the work, the volunteers helped with cleaning, cooking, serving the residents of different houses. Every house had a chapel with a crucifix that had a sign next to it saying “I thirst.” Those were the words of Jesus Christ on the cross. Saint Teresa understood that Jesus thirsted in the poor and needed us to alleviate that thirst. Saint Teresa knew she could not solve world hunger or the other great reasons behind poverty and she did not seek to do so. She wanted to change the world, one person at a time. If you cannot feed a thousand people, feed one was her method of service. She once said “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” To honor this great woman of faith, we will have a new statue in our church of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, kneeling and holding a child. It shows her love of God and love for all God’s children. Each person com-ing to Mass today will also receive a com-memorative bookmark of her to help us to imitate her love for Christ and for the poor. God bless, Fr. O’Connor

trás de la pobreza y ella no buscaba hacerlo. Ella quería cambiar el mundo, una persona a la vez. Si no puedes alimentar a miles de personas, alimentar a uno era su método de servicio. Ella una vez dijo “yo sola no puedo cambiar el mun-do, pero si puedo arrojar una piedra al cruzar las aguas para crear mis olas.” Para honrar a esta gran mujer de fe, tendremos una nueva estatua en nuestra iglesia de Santa Teresa de Calcuta, arrodillada y cargando a un niño. Demuestra su amor a Dios y el amor por todos los hijos de Dios. Cada persona que venga a Misa hoy reci-birá un marcador de libros conmemorativo de ella para ayudarnos a imitar su amor por Cristo y por los pobres.

Did you know? The 125 Anniversary Year of St. Mary’s noted many liturgi-cal and physical changes within the operation of the plant. The Lower Church was no longer used for classrooms; it was decided to renovate the space and construct a chapel utilizing liturgical items from the old Church. Under the guidance of the Diocesan Liturgical Office, the work was begun. The supports for the new altar and the beautiful wooden cross were once a part of the altar rail from the 1888 Church; the old pulpit (ambo) became the pedestal to hold the tabernacle. The Statue of the Blessed Mother, a link to the past, was brought downstairs and a semi-circular niche was made to surround Mary. Soft golden tones of color, from walls to drapes to carpet, blended to complete a prayerful area for liturgical celebrations. Dedicated on February 11, 1979 by Father John Callahan, Our Lady’s Chapel was named in memory of Father Schubert; the Chapel was used for daily Mass, Spanish Mass on Sundays and other devotional ser-vices for several decades. Liturgical modifications became evident: the priest faced the people, the congregation prayed with him in their own language, lectors and leaders of song would assist at Mass, reception of the Eucharist under both species and taking the Host in the hand became permissible. Those who grew up with the Latin Mass could appreciate the contrast to these changes.

50TH REUNION FOR THE CLASS OF 1966 The alumni from St. Mary’s class of 1966 are planning a 50th Reunion on October 29, 2016. Organ Repairs Some of you may have noticed issues with the organ over the last few months. Donald Hausbeck told me that the organ predates the current church. The organ was actually installed in the second church and moved to the Current church when it was built in 1958. As with any-thing valuable, time takes its toll and work needs to be done. Leather needs to be replaced in the swell of the or-gan and other sections. Work began last week and will continue for the next two weeks. The total costs for repair of the or-gan will be $11,000. Not a bill we needed with the new boiler being installed right now. We received a donation of $3,000 to help with the costs of the organ repairs, for which we are deeply grateful.

There will be two special collections coming up to assist victims of natural disasters:

Sunday, September 25 for the victims of the flooding in Louisiana and

Sunday, October 9 for the victims of the earthquake in Italy.

Weekday Noon Mass The 12 noon weekday Mass returns this week following Labor Day. The Mass will continue until December 30th,

when it will be discontinued. Several factors have led to this decision. The noon Mass was instituted by the Holy Ghost

Fathers when they arrived and they would have three or four priests at a time living in the rectory, which made coverage of the Mass easy. With the departure of the Holy Ghost Fathers,

there are only two priests assigned to the parish. Originally there was going to be a third priest, but as you may recall, he never came. It has been diocesan policy for a long time that there should be one less daily Mass than priests assigned to

ensure coverage. There has been an increase of funerals this year; we are now at the total we had all of last year. We will have a noon Mass on Holy Days of Obligation. This does not

in anyway affect the 12 noon Mass on Sundays. Thank you for your understanding.

Labor Day Monday, September 5th is Labor Day.

The parish office will be closed. We will have the 8:30 am Mass and there will be no exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

¿Sabía usted? En el 125 aniversario de María Auxiliadora noto muchos cam-bios litúrgicos y físicos dentro la operación de la planta. La iglesia de abajo ya no se usaba como salón de clases; se decidió renovar el espacio y construir una capilla utilizando cosas litúr-gicas de la iglesia vieja. Bajo la dirección de la Oficina Litúrgi-ca Diocesana, el trabajo comenzó. El apoyo para el nuevo altar y la hermosa cruz de madera una vez fueron parte del barandal del altar de la iglesia en 1888; el pulpito viejo se convirtió en el pedestal para detener el tabernáculo. La estatua de la Santísima Madre, un vínculo al pasado, fue llevado abajo y un nicho semi-circular se construyó para rodear a María. Tonos de color sua-ves, desde paredes a cortinas y alfombra, combinaron para com-pletar un área de oración para celebraciones litúrgicos. Reparaciones del órgano Algunos de ustedes se habrán dado cuenta de los problemas con el órgano los últimos pocos me-ses. Donald Hausebeck me dijo que el órgano antedata la iglesia de ahora. El órgano fue insta-lado en la segunda iglesia y se movió a la iglesia actual cuando fue construida en 1958. Como cualquier cosa valiosa, el tiempo toma su perdi-da y se necesita trabajar en el órgano. Se necesi-ta reparar la piel de la ola del órgano y otras secciones. Se comenzó a trabajar en el órgano la semana pasada y continuara por los siguientes dos semanas. El costo total para las reparaciones del órgano será de $11,000. No es una factura que necesitamos ahora con la nueva calde-ra que se está instalando ahora. Hemos recibido una donación de $3,000 para ayudarnos con los costos de la reparación del órgano, y estamos profundamente agradecido por eso.

Habrá dos colectas especiales para asistir a las víctimas de desastres naturales: Domingo, 25 de septiembre para las

víctimas de la inundación en Luisiana y el Domingo, 9 de octubre para las víctimas del terremoto en Italia.

Misa de las 12 del mediodía en la semana La Misa de las 12 del mediodía en la semana regresará esta

semana después del Día del Trabajo. La Misa continuará hasta el 30 de diciembre, y después será descontinuada. Varios facto-res han llevado a esta decisión. La Misa del mediodía fue insti-

tuida por los Padres del Espíritu Santo cuando ellos llegaron tenían tres o cuatro sacerdotes a la vez viviendo en la rectoría, y por eso cubrían fácilmente cada Misa. Con la partida de los

Padres del Espíritu Santo, solo hay dos sacerdotes asignados en la parroquia. Originalmente iba haber un tercer sacerdote, pero como recordaran, nunca llego. Es una póliza diocesana de largo

tiempo que debe haber una Misa menos que sacerdotes asignados para asegurar cobertura. Habido un aumento en

funerales este año; hasta ahora hemos llegado al total de lo que tuvimos el año pasado. Tendremos una Misa en el mediodía en

los Días Santos de Obligación. Esto en ninguna manera afectará la Misa de las 12 del mediodía los domingos.

Día del Trabajo El lunes, 5 de septiembre es el Día del Trabajo. La oficina

parroquial estará cerrada. Tendremos la Misa de las 8:30am y no habrá exposición del Santísimo Sacramento.
