UNIVERSAL PRAYER

L I T U R G Y O F T H E E U C H A R I S T OFFERTORY Greater love hath no man John Ireland (1886–1972)

Many waters cannot quench Love, neither can the floods drown it. Love is strong as death. Many waters cannot quench Love.

Greater Love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Who His own Self bare our sins in His own Body on the tree,

that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified, in the Name of the Lord Jesus;

Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, That ye should shew forth the praises of Him

Who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies, a living sacrifice,

holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

MUSIC NOTES The English composer John Ireland studied composition at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford. He later taught at the College, where the prolific composer, Benjamin Britten, was one of his pupils. An accomplished organist, Ireland held several notable church positions. Considered an “English impressionist,” Ireland’s music is influenced by the music of Debussy, Ravel, and the early works of Stravinsky and Bartók. He wrote many small-scale works including chamber music and piano pieces. He wrote a number of hymns and sacred anthems. The anthem sung today, Greater love hath no man, is one of his most popular works, having been sung in churches throughout the world. Everett Titcomb served for fifty years as organist and choirmaster of the Church of Saint John the Evangelist, an Episcopal parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition which was on Beacon Hill in Boston. (The church closed its doors a few years ago.) He also served as professor of church music at the New England Conservatory of Music and Boston University. Titcomb wrote a number of works for organ and choir. I will not leave you comfortless, an Eastertide anthem written in a polyphonic style, was composed in 1934 and gave Titcomb international renown when the work was performed by a choir of 4,000 in London at the English Church Music Festival in 1936.
