Our new Pastor – Fr. Darrio Boscutti As you probably already know, Cardinal Cupich will appoint Fr. Darrio Boscutti the 6th Pastor of St. Edna Parish. His assignment here will begin on July 1, 2018. I met him for the first time when he came to visit St. Edna as part of the placement process about two weeks ago. However, I have heard good things about him for many years. He was ordained in 1986, and he is the current Pastor of St. Cyprian in River Grove. I will let him tell you more about himself in the coming weeks. St. Cyprian Parish, where Fr. Darrio is now Pastor, has been participating in “Renew My Church,” and has been told that it will merge with a neighboring parish, St. Celestine’s in Elmwood Park, on July 1st. The Archdiocese has decided that, even though both worship sites will remain open, the new combined parish will have a new name. So, in some respects, the coming merger will be the ending of parish life as it is today. Therefore, the next few months will be a time of difficult transition for both Fr. Darrio and St. Cyprian. Please keep him and his parishioners at St. Cyprian’s in your prayers. After the announcement about Fr. Darrio last weekend, a few St. Edna’s parishioners came to me to thank me for being St. Edna’s Administrator these past months and to say goodbye. First of all, my administrator job at St. Edna will not end until July 1, and I am very happy to be with you until then. Secondly, the last several months have brought me much joy, as I reconnected with many old friends, and as I help minister in our vibrant faith community. When I do leave in July, I will be proud of the ministry we have done and happy to return to semi-retirement at my new condo. Groundbreaking for the new Parish Center St. Edna’s Parish Center has been a long time coming. The plan was conceived at a Parish Leadership Day eight years ago, when Fr. Jerry and the parish leaders saw that more multi-purpose space was needed for the future. The fundraising by Fathers Jerry and Rich, and the building moratorium by the Archdiocese, extended the time. Finally, through the success of the “To Teach Who Christ Is” campaign, Fr. Rich determined that we had enough money to begin building and asked the Archdiocese for a bridge loan in case we did not collect all the pledged money before the building is completed. Finally, Bishop Rassas and I supported the project and we were given permission to begin building, and the possible bridge loan was also granted. So now, in collaboration with Henry Brothers (our construction company) and St. Edna’s Building Committee (who consistently hung in there for 8 years), the staff and I are pleased to announce that we will hold the ceremonial groundbreaking on Sunday April 8, after the 11:30am Mass. At the end of the Mass, the recessional procession will continue to the front of the construction site, just north of the entrance to the Hurley Center. Bishop Rassas (who will preside at the Mass), the Mayor of Arlington Heights, Tom Hayes, and myself and the members of our construction committee will be given hard hats and shovels for the ceremonial groundbreaking. (Actually, a construction fence will have already been erected, since construction is scheduled to begin during the week after Easter.) This ceremony will take about 15 minutes and please plan to stay after for refreshments in the Doherty Center.

Congratulations to Lorie Crepeau! As you know, we are blessed with a very talented, dedicated and hardworking staff. After I was here for some months in daily ministerial contact with them, I noticed that Lorie’s actual job was much more extensive than her job description as an Adult Formation Director. From my experience of working within the Archdiocesan Ministerial Personnel Department, I suggested that she contact Carol Walters, the Director of the Office for Lay Ecclesial Ministry. In short order, given Lorie’s background and experience, the Archdiocese has recognized her status as a Pastoral Associate. This role is not new to St. Edna. Sister Janice Klein, who was a staff member 30 years ago when I was the Associate Pastor, was one of the first Pastoral Associates in the Archdiocese. The Pastoral Associate’s role is basically like the role of an Associate Pastor, except he or she is not ordained. Congratulations, Lorie!

Fr. Bob

Special Religious Development—(SPRED)

Premise: The fundamental premise of the program is that the Church, the Sacraments, and the Love of God are here for all of us. Every man, woman and child has a right to come into the Church and live her liturgy, experience her rich history and traditions, and feel the presence of God in their lives. It is our obligation as Christians to help as we can to make that right a reality for those with physical, mental, emotional, and intellectual challenges.

Mission: The mission of the St. Edna SPRED Program is to share the Word and the Love of God with people who have developmental disabilities.

Age Group: the SPRED Program at St. Edna ministers to children ages 6-10.

Meeting: SPRED meets monthly on Saturday morning from 9:30-11:15

If you have a child with special challenges who would benefit from the SPRED Program please contact the Parish Office at 847-398-3362. Volunteers are also needed. Special training is provided through the Archdiocese of Chicago. If interested please contact the Parish Office at the above number.

T Join the open discussion every Tuesday morning at 9:00am in Room D of the Hurley Center to discuss the readings for the following weekend. It brings us together in prayer and friendship, renews us spiritually, and brings the Word of God into our everyday lives.

Christ shared His Last Supper with His friends as He had shared suppers before with them. We believe in the symbolism of Christ’s sharing and we share with each other during our liturgies. We would like to extend this sharing further by inviting you and your family to share in a potluck supper before the evening liturgy on Holy Thursday, March 29. We will start to gather at 5:30pm in the Doherty Center. Food will be served beginning at 5:45pm. For those who are unable

to come that early, food will be served until 6:45pm. This should allow adequate time for everyone to finish their meal before the 7:30pm Holy Thursday liturgy begins. St. Edna will provide the main course, plus bread, coffee and pop. Please bring the following food item to share according to the first letter of your last name. Also, please label your dish!

Stewardship Bulletin Reflection March 11, 2018

Fourth Sunday of Lent

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” Do we really need a more powerful reminder of the importance of Lent and Easter than that? That verse (from John 3:16) has become very popular in modern culture, to the point that we see it often at athletic events. When the University of Florida played for the national college football championship in 2009, quarterback Tim Tebow did not wear the regular eye black under his eyes. Under his right eye it said “John” and under his left eye it said “3:16.” God sends us messages all the time, if we listen and are attentive. Tebow did not have a remarkable professional career, but he was the quarterback of the Denver Broncos against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2012 playoffs. The Broncos won, and in that game Tebow passed for 316 yards; his completed passes averaged 31.6 yards; perhaps the key play in the game came on third down and 16; the TV ratings for the game were 31.6%. That is not the important aspect, however. What is important is that the truth of that statement is so simple; nevertheless, it is difficult for us to completely grasp its significance. The truth is that God loves us, no matter what we are or what our attitude toward God is. The world that God gave His Son to save is our world. We are the children of God. This Lenten season is a time to see that and accept it as truth.

St. Edna Outreach Ministry Working Poor

Who are the people served by St. Edna Outreach? Many may be familiar to you. They could be your neighbors who go to work every day. They could be the person next to you on the train. With the high cost of living in the Northwest suburbs, many working people find themselves unable to meet monthly expenses if they need to miss a few days or a few weeks from work.

Here are some of their stories. A husband and wife have lived in an apartment in the parish boundaries. He is retired. She has been working the past few years, but got laid off in December. They could barely pay their rent, utilities, insurance, and food bills when the wife worked. When they needed to live on the husband’s retirement income, there was not enough money to pay the bills. Outreach has helped them with food from the pantry, a gas card, Jewel cards, and part of their monthly rent to help while the wife continues to look for work. A single adult renting an apartment in our area had a job working as an office clerk. She recently became ill and has had to make a decision on whether to spend her money on expensive prescriptions or rent and utilities. She came to us asking for help with her electric and gas bills. We paid these and helped her with food from the pantry and gift cards for gas and food. A woman, who lives in the area with her older husband and adult kids, has come to Outreach often. She has worked several years for a temp agency with no benefits. Her husband has worked sporadically due to health issues. The adult kids have worked part-time jobs, but one of the kids got into legal trouble, draining much of the family’s finances. We have helped the family regularly with food from the pantry, gift cards, Thanksgiving baskets, and the Gift of Love program. Each of the past four years, we have helped the family with one of these payments: rent, utilities, health insurance, and car loan. They have lived from paycheck to paycheck. Now the wife has lost her job. What can you do to help?? As in past years, each family at St. Edna is asked to contribute $1 Each Day, ($40) during Lent. Some families may be able to give more, which is needed and will certainly be appreciated. Some may struggle with this amount, which is certainly understandable, but it is essential that everyone participates and makes some contribution. Throughout Lent, white and purple envelopes for your Alms are available in the literature racks in the Narthex. Alms placed in these envelopes can be dropped in the collection baskets along with your regular offerings, or your alms can be placed in the alms boxes by the exit doors of the church. Please make the needs of poor knocking on the doors at St. Edna a priority as you prayerfully consider your Lenten Alms contribution. Please be generous.

If you have any questions about Outreach or would like to help out as an Outreach Minister, please contact Bill Clark at 847-772-2578.

Development Assistance Ministry 2018

You’ve achieved a lot, but are you ready to help others achieve something, too?

If the answer is yes, and you’re over 16, you should join the Development Assistance Ministry. Ministry members are currently working with Habitat for Humanity and local churches to build a home for a low-income family. The sa sfac on that comes from helping others is great and can last a life me.

The current project started last September and will finish this spring.

Interested parishioners should contact either Tarry Hoskins (hoskins @a .net) or Bob Ruffa o (rruffa [email protected])

We have two build dates le this spring that are set aside for St Edna volunteers.

The dates are: March 17, April 14

Hope you can join us; you’ll be richer for it!

S S E Be the change

Having facts on hand is not equivalent to “getting it”: that is, really perceiving the ramifications of what we know. We all suffer from a rash of too much information. What are we supposed to do about famine, stranded refugees, all the humanitarian crises of our era? What’s to be done about natural disasters, gun violence, global warming, and children neglected and abused in our own cities? Jesus comes to heal our blindness, and to bring us into the light. Once we see, we are called to do. T ’ R : 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a; Ephesians 5:8-14; John 9:1-41

L W Take Jesus at his word

What caused an anxious parent of a dying child to accept Jesus’ word as sufficient? “Your son will live” is not medicine. These four words are not magic. Yet they were enough because of the authority of the one who spoke them. Do we believe in the words of Jesus in the same way? Try living as if you do. Start with accepting that your sins are forgiven. This is the miracle of new life that Jesus promises us now and when his Kingdom comes. T ’ R : Isaiah 65:17-21; John 4:43-54

L W Bathed in grace

Not long before Jesus heals the sick man at the pool, he encounters the Samaritan woman at the well. The stories have much in common. Neither knew who Jesus was or the power he possessed, but Jesus knew everything about them—and offers to wash away their troubles, in fact, without them hav-ing to ask or repent first. Both were afflicted and shunned for a long time, coming to the water alone with nobody to help them. Jesus goes ahead and heals them, before they have a clue. But isn’t that just like God? Giving us what no one else will give? Giving it to us before we have the sense to ask? Our job: Tell others of God’s amazing grace. T ’ R : Ezekiel 47:1-9, 12; John 5:1-16

L W Extended hours

God worked to create the world in six days and then rested on the seventh. Thereafter, all creation was called to rest on the seventh day and to observe with God a sabbath of holiness. But the gospel reminds us that God’s work continues even after quittin’ time. Jesus therefore ignores the whistle and

stays at his post, doing the work of God even as the world rests from its labors. God’s mercy and compassion know no rest. They continue as long as human weakness is in need of healing. Followers of Jesus, therefore, punch in at Baptism and stay on the job until the work is done. T ’ R : Isaiah 49:8-15; John 5:17-30

L W Keep the focus where it belongs

As Lent proceeds, one of the temptations that can side-track us is to start feeling pretty good about ourselves: I am keeping my resolution, I am praying more, I’ve asked God to forgive my sins. Soon our hands folded in prayer become fingers pointing at others: They gossip, they lie and steal, they are weak and sinful. We may not be that obvious, but the readings today show that the religious leaders were quick to misjudge. We can’t let the good that Lent is doing for us evaporate by failing to embrace and love others. T ’ R : Exodus 32:7-14; John 5:31-47

L W ; D A Learn your origin story

Where Jesus came from was always a source of trouble. King Herod went after all the babies around Bethlehem because of the prophecy that said the next king would come from there. People later scoffed to hear that Jesus was raised in Nazareth—a town that didn’t get any respect in cosmopolitan Jerusalem. Some also complained that Jesus came from anywhere at all, because the Messiah’s origins ought to be a bit more mysterious. But no one seemed to get where Jesus was coming from in a cosmic sense: from the One who sent him. Are we as clear about our origins? T ’ R : Wisdom 2:1a, 12-22; John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30

M P , B , M United we stand

Until the mid-1800s most Irish immigrants in America were middle-class Protestants, but in 1845 Ireland’s Great Potato Famine forced nearly 1 million of its poor Catholics to flee to America’s shores. Open and hostile anti-Catholicism made it difficult for the new arrivals to find work and be accepted in American society. What helped the Irish Catholics, they soon discovered, was their large population, which when organized gave them political power. There is strength in numbers whether it is in fighting prejudice or showing compassion. Get yourselves and others organized around a just cause and become a force to be reckoned with. T ’ R : Jeremiah 11:18-20; John 7:40-53
