San Sebastián nació en una familia noble en Narbona (Francia) en el año 256.

Saint Sebastian was born in a noble family in Narbona (France) in 256 A.D.

Él era un soldado romano.

He was a roman soldier.

San Sebastián se convirtió al cristianismo y ayudaba a los más necesitados.

Saint Sebastian became a Christian and he helped to the most needed people.

Entonces, Maximiano el Emperador le amenazó de muerte…

Then, Maximian the Emperor threated to death...

…El emperador le dio a elegir a San Sebastián entre su carrera militar o servir a Jesucristo.

… The Emperor gave him a choice, he had tochoose between his military career orserving to Jesus Christ.

Él eligió su fe en Dios. Así que otros soldados lo ataron a un naranjo y le lanzaron flechas, pero no murió.

He chose his faith in God. So other soldierstied him to an orange tree and they threwhim arrows, but he didn‟t die.

En la Edad Media, en el siglo XVI, la gente de Madridejos rezó a San Sebastián para que les protegiera de La Peste.

In the Middle Ages, in XVI century, peoplefrom Madridejos asked him to protectthem against the Black Death.

Esta es la razón por la que se convirtió en el Santo Patrón de Madridejos.

This is the reason because he becameMadridejos‟ Patron Saint.

Celebramos una fiesta en su honor el 20 de Enero. En la plaza ponemos una “cucaña” con naranjas arriba, que representa el árbol donde murió.

We celebrate a festivity in his honour everyJanuary 20th. We put a „greasy pole‟ in the square with oranges at the top, thatrepresents the tree where he died.

En la plaza, la víspera del 20 de Enero algunos chicos llevan “Toros de fuego” (un cajón con fuegos artificiales) y persiguen al resto de la gente… Es muy divertido.

In the square, 20th January eve, some boyscarry „bulls of fire‟ (a crate withfireworks) and they chase the rest of people… It‟s very funny.

Encendemos una hoguera enorme…

We light a very big bonfire…

…también celebramos una misa y una procesión donde los soldados y gente del pueblo transportan la imagen del Santo a su iglesia.

…we also celebrate a religious service and a procession where soldiers and people fromour town carry the statue to his church.
