MASS INTENTIONS

Readings & Reflections

HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM Today Jesus stresses how children embody the reign of God. They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God's love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ's love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will enable us to do this, but that grace is freely and generously given. We have only to accept it. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY'S READINGS FIRST READING • Genesis 2:18-24 The man said, "This one is bone of my bones and flesh of my

flesh; this one shall be called 'woman' " RESPONSORIAL PSALM • Psalm 128 May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives SECOND READING • Hebrews 2:9-11 He who consecrates and those who are being

consecrated all have one origin GOSPEL • Mark 10:2-16 [2-12]

Liturgy

St. Rose Volunteer Audio/Visual Liturgy Team is NOW being formed! We are looking for folks just like you that would be interested in assisting with our Audio/Visual (A/V) presentations at the Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses.

We are in need of one person at each of the Sunday Masses to operate a laptop to display Mass content. No experience needed, training will be provided. We also need assistance in creating the visual content to be displayed. Content would be provided with minimal keyboard entry. Simple cut and paste into a display software application format. This work could be done at your

home with your PC and Internet access. Training and support will be provided.

We need assistance in capturing A/V content for Mass and other Sacramental services to provide live-streaming access. Some computer experience needed with training and support provided.

You may ask, what's an Extraordinary Minister?

"Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion" is the formal title of laypeople who distribute the Eucharist during Mass. As the title implies, there are also "ordinary ministers" - those who are literally "ordained" to the ministry namely bishops, priests, and deacons. In every celebration of the Eucharist, there should be sufficient number of ministers to reverently/distribute Holy Communion, especially when Communion is offered under the both species: the Body and Blood of Christ. This is why laypeople are needed to serve in this ministry. It is indeed an honor to be able to offer the Body and Blood of Christ to a fellow member of His body.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion receive spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence. The preparation given at St. Rose of Lima Parish addresses the practical manner in which to handle the consecrated bread and wine. It also focuses on the understanding that a Minister of Communion is serving the true presence of the Lord.

A complete description of the regulations may be found in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' (Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion Under Both Kinds for the Dioceses of the United States of America, NDRHC, No. 28.)

Excerpts from: Diocese of Sacramento website, U.S. Catholic Faith in Real Life

Are you interested in becoming an Extraordinary Minister at St. Rose of Lima Parish?

Please prayerfully consider this beautiful ministry. Then if you hear God’s call to serve as an Extraordinary Minister and are interested in learning more, please contact our Liturgy Coordinator, Lynne Brys at [email protected] or 916-783-5211 x7006 for more details. The next training session is scheduled for Thursday, October 4th at 6:00 PM.

PARISH FAMILY VOCATION CROSS Families who have taken the Vocation Cross into their home for a week are experiencing grace-filled moments from their prayer. You too can experience these blessings. Please prayerfully consider reserving a week that you can participate. It is a great time to talk as a family about priests, deacons, sisters and brothers you know and

admire and to pray in thanksgiving for those who generously share themselves in Church ministry. There are opportunities for the entire year, listed on the signup sheets in the vestibule of the church.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our Liturgy Coordinator, Lynne Brys at 916-783-5211 x7006.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Loving God, You speak to us and nourish us through

the life of this church community.

In the name of Jesus, we ask you to send your Spirit to us so that men and women among us, young and old, will respond to your call to service and leadership in the church.

We pray, especially, in our day, for those who hear your invitation to be a priest, sister, brother, or deacon.

May those who are opening their hearts and minds to your call be encouraged and strengthened through our enthusiasm in your service. Amen

A prayer for Priests “O Jesus, our great High Priests, hear my humble prayers on behalf of your priests. Give them a deep faith, a bright and firm hope and a burning love which will ever increase in the course of their priestly life…”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from "popery" to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-Anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a "chapel." Catholic "Emancipation" was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built gloriously beautiful churches as their first act on free soil! --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S.
