From the Pastor’s Desk
This week we observe the 50th anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s landmark encyclical letter Humnae
Vitae, which addressed the regulation of birth. At the time, there was great pressure on the Church to down-play the importance of the “procreative good” that is part of married love. Some even argued that it could be sacrificed to achieve the more “human goods” of marriage.!
!
Pope Paul responded that the unitive element (the commitment to a lifelong faithful marriage) and the procreative element (openness to children) are in fact inseparable: the fail to honor one is a failure to honor the other. He reminded us that the act of bringing forth new human life is tremendously important, that it is participating in God’s act of creating a new im-mortal human being, with an eternal destiny.!
!
Against some who would claim that the Church has put undue weight on the biological purpose of the sexual act, Humanae Vitae teaches us that human be-ings do not “reproduce” in the same way as animals, but rather we “procreate.” Human sexual intercourse creates families, and for it to be a moral act, it requires a husband and a wife who have pledged unconditional love for each other, and who are committed to work-ing together to seek mutual holiness and to raising children to be citizens of God’s heavenly kingdom.!
!
The teachings of Humanae Vitae, particularly the continued prohibition of artificial birth control, are all directed toward this end: the family. Acknowledging that these teachings can be difficult to accept, we are reminded that Jesus’ demands on his disciples always involve the Cross, but that he also promises us the grace we need to do what is right.!
!
If you have never read Humanae Vitae, consider reading this short document, which is freely available online. Many who read it often find it to be words much more persuasive than expected, and those who seek to live by it can attest to the powerful truth it contains.!
