First Sunday of Advent

The prophet Isaiah pleads with God to return to the people who have become lost in sin. He asks God why he lets the people wander and harden their hearts. Isaiah pleads with God to perform mighty deeds so that the people would know that he is God; and then they would return to him and obey his Covenant. He begs God to deliver his people from their sins. St. Paul thanks God on behalf of the Corinthians that the tes mony of Christ has been confirmed among them and that they do not lack any spiritual gi s. He exhorts them to stand firm and irreproachable as they await the Day of the Lord. In the gospel passage, Jesus tells the disciples to be watchful and alert for they do not know when the Lord is coming. He prays that the master may not come suddenly and find them sleeping. He repeats his command to them: “Watch!”. Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b, 64:2-4 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 Mark 13:33-37

First Sunday of Advent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today is the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of the Church’s new liturgical year. We will be reading from the Gospel of Mark. The Advent season is really a bridge between the second and first comings of Christ. Last week we celebrated Christ the King, the feast of Christ’s return in glory at the end of me. At Christmas we will cele-brate the birth of Christ into our human family. During the first two weeks of Advent the gospels focus on the end

me, the final culmina on of the Pascal mystery. The last two weeks of Advent prepare us for Christmas, the be-ginning of the Pascal mystery as God himself enters into human history.

The en re Advent season is a me of hope and joyful an cipa on of the coming of our Lord. In today’s gospel, Jesus tells the disciples, “Be watchful! Be alert!” They do not know the me of the Lord’s return. Because the Lord may return suddenly, at any me, Jesus warns them not to be found asleep. Christ’s admoni on to “Watch!” is really an exhorta on to live in the expecta on of his return. If we live in hope and joy and trust in the Lord, we will be able to see him when he comes. If we live well, meaning a righteous life, following the teachings and exam-ple of Christ, we will be sanc fied and given a place in the heavenly kingdom. This is the joyful, hopeful expecta-

on that Chris ans are called to envision. Our Chris an journey is our response to the call of Jesus, to put our trust in him, and follow him into that same deep and in mate rela onship that he has with the Father.

Mark’s gospel doe not have an infancy narra ve. Throughout his gospel, St. Mark always focuses on the Cross be-cause he wants to keep before us the centrality of the passion, death and resurrec on of Christ as the salvific event. Jesus is the Messiah, even at his birth, precisely because of the triumph of the Cross. For St. Mark, every-thing else in the life of Jesus is a commentary on the Passion. Mark’s is the first gospel wri en so he takes great pains to keep this central truth of our faith foremost in the minds of his readers. But we should not mistake the starkness of his gospel to mean that Mark has no joy. On the Cross, the Word of God - in the person of Jesus the Christ - has taken away the power of sin. The triumph of the Cross has freed us to live in the joy of God’s kingdom.

St. Paul echoes this joy in his wri ng to the Corinthians. He says that the grace of God bestowed on them in Christ Jesus has enriched them in every way. As we await for the revela on of Christ, we do not lack any spiritual gi . God himself will keep us firm in our faith, irreproachable on the day of the Lord. St. Paul tells us that God himself has called us to fellowship with his Son. This is indeed cause for joy and hope and thanksgiving.

While the Church begins the Advent season, our culture begins its prepara on for Christmas which is o en more consumer-driven than faith-filled. Please do not be so overwhelmed by ether the commercial spirit of our culture nor the fear in this me of pandemic that you cannot experience the joy of the presence of God with us as we pre-pare for the birth of our Savior.

The Advent Giving Tree is in the ves bule to help needy families in our Sharing Parish Ascension/St. Susanna (see page four). We will have food/clothing drop off next Saturday, December 5th from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. for the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels in the back parking lot. Please help give them a brighter Christmas through your gen-erosity. Details are on page seven. Parish Wall Calendars for 2021, courtesy of Lawrence Funeral Home, and the Li le Blue Book of Daily Advent Medita ons are available in the ves bule of the church and at the rectory. These six-minute daily reflec ons help us to prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas. Please take one home with you.

We will be celebrate an Advent Prayer Service for Healing and Reconcilia on of our Na on at 4:00 p.m. on Tues-day, December 15th. In lieu of an Advent Reconcilia on Service, due to health/safety concerns, there will be extra

mes for Individual Reconcilia ons on December 17, Thursday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and December 21, Monday from 6:00 –8:00 p.m. Our Simbang Gabi Mass will be celebrated on December 18, Friday at 7:00 p.m. Unfortu-nately, we are not able to host a recep on a er the Mass this year. Please see page four for the complete Advent schedule.

Have a great week and a blessed Advent. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
