Annual Catholic Appeal

The Annual Catholic Appeal supports financially disadvantaged parishes and schools, Archdiocesan ministries such as evangeliza on, human dignity, family ministries, religious educa on, con nuing educa on for priests, lay ministers and staffs, and Catholic Relief Services. The goal this year is $12 million for programs with an es mated addi onal $5 million in parish rebates. This is broken down at approximately: Parish and school financial support of $5 million, Archdiocesan ministries $5 million, Catholic Relief Services $700,000 and the cost of the Appeal $1.2 million. The chart of how last year’s funds were spent (collected in 2018 and disbursed in 2019) can be found on page six.

Because historically most of the rebates go to the wealthiest parishes, the Archdiocese has changed the way they cal-culate parish goals. Twenty-three parishes earned over 50% of the parish rebates. In the past, every parish had the same target of 6% of their normal revenue. This year, the wealthy parish target is 8%, middle income parishes 7%, and poor parishes 4%. In addition, rebates will currently be assessed at 10% to fund the goals of the Appeal, with 90% re-turning to the parishes. We fall into the middle income bracket, so our goal has been raised to 7%, or $40,879.

Fi h Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the reading from the prophet Isaiah, the Lord commands his people to share their bread with the hungry, to shelter the homeless, to clothe the naked and care for the oppressed. To those who obey his commands, the Lord promises to protect and to answer their prayers when they cry out to him. God’s promise of salva on is given to those who obey his commands. They will be wrapped in the glory of the Lord and all will see their light shining in the darkness. St. Paul proclaims the mystery of God, the revela on of salva on in Christ Jesus. Paul tells them his proclama on is not made with persuasive words, but with a demonstra on of the Holy Spirit and power so that their faith might rest, not on human wisdom, but on the power of God. Jesus con nues the Sermon on the Mount with the symbols of salt and light. He compares the disciples to the salt of the earth, salt that is used to flavor and preserve food. If the salt loses its taste, then it is no longer any good. If the disciples do not live as Jesus has taught them, then their teaching loses its value. He also calls his disciples the light of the world. The lamp is put on a stand to give light to the en re house, not to be hidden under a basket. The disciples are to let their light shine so that others may see their good deeds and glorify God.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today’s scriptures call us to live our faith in concrete ways. God promises salvation for those who do. Of course, it is not our actions that earn us salvation, but that our good deeds are evidence of the life of God within us.

The first reading occurs after the Israelites have returned to the promised land after their captivity in Babylon. God is promising them a new start. Basically, God is asking them to get it right this time. The Lord asks his people to fulfill the Covenant by works of justice. Sharing their bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless and clothing the naked are the concrete ways that God insists are the signs of those who possess his Spir-it. These are the ones Jesus refers to as seeking after righteousness who are given the kingdom of heaven. In his very poetic way, Isaiah tells the people that “your light will break forth like the dawn, … vindication will go before you and the glory of the Lord will be your rearguard”. If they keep God’s commands, then the Lord will be with them to protect them and to heal them in their time of need. Having just returned from their second (!) exile, Isai-ah is exhorting them to get it right this time. The delivery from exile by a Persian (pagan) king is what St. Paul re-fers to as a demonstration of the Holy Spirit and the power of God. We never know how or where the Holy Spirit will show up.

Jesus puts it quite simply in the portion of the Sermon on the Mount that we hear today. He uses the literary com-parisons of salt and light to tell the disciples that they must live out the faith and teachings that he has given them. They are to be salt, adding flavor and preserving the life of God within them, so that others can taste the goodness of the Lord. They are to let their light shine so that all may see the glory of God in their good deeds.

We are all called to be the light of Christ, living our faith in concrete ways that others may experience God’s love through us. Through Baptism we are made “living Christs” and are given the responsibility to imitate Jesus through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, through compassion and forgiveness, through self-sacrifice and love for others. Who we are as children of light should be apparent (made manifest) by what we do.

This Year’s Annual Catholic Appeal has the theme Come, Follow Me …. and heal our world. This year our goal is $40,879. I will introduce the campaign this weekend at all the masses. We will begin the in-pew pledge process next weekend (February 15-16), and hear the Cardinal’s homily at all the masses. We will complete the campaign with the second round of in pew-pledging at all masses on the weekend of February 22-23. Please read the short article on page two about the Appeal and the chart of page six that shows how last year’s funds were used.

Our Adult Faith Series, Conversations on Faith, will continue this Wednesday with a presentation on the Lord’s Prayer, Thy Will Be Done: On Earth as it is in Heaven. Peg Lanctot, who holds degrees in Pastoral Theology and is currently a Catholic Hospital Chaplain, will lead the conversation. She is a lively and entertaining speaker. Each evening is a stand alone session. All are welcome, even if you have not been at the earlier conversations.

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated here at St. Robert Bellarmine on Friday, February 21, with Bishop Bartosic presiding. Thirty-Five of our young people will be receiving the sacrament, as well as fifteen candidates from Our Lady of Victory. Please keep all the Confirmandi and their families in your prayers. We will be hosting the Multi-Parish Mission this year. Please save the dates March 9-11 (Monday through Wednesday) at 7 p.m. Fr. Bob Lombardo of Our Lady of the Angels Mission will be our featured speaker.

The nation will celebrate President’s Day on Monday February 17, commemorating Presidents Washington and Lincoln. George Washington led us through the Revolutionary War and is known as the Father of the Nation. Abraham Lincoln led the country through the Civil War and re-united the nation. In today’s sectarian political cli-mate, we would do well to reflect on the values of unity, peace and the common good.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Conversations on Faith — The Lord’s Prayer The Lord’s Prayer is the most commonly shared prayer among all Christian traditions. We know it so well, and many people pray it every day. This year we will take the opportunity to “unpack’ the prayer and have some time to share reflections on what it means personally to each of us. This month’s conversation, They Will be Done, On earth as it is in Heaven will be facilitated by Peggy Lanctot. She holds a degree in Pastoral Studies and currently ministers as a hospital chaplain. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not in to temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
