From the Pastor

Parish life is somewhat slower during the summer. Ministry and service, however, continue. THANK YOU to those ministers who help us at weekend Masses. Faithful servers, readers, cantors, ushers, extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, musicians and our faithful continue to gather to respond to the Lord’s command to meet Him in the Breaking of the Bread.

Just as your bills continue to arrive during the summer, so do ours. Thank you for your regular commitment to stewardship in the form of the Sunday offering. We depend on that.

Each year, we report a “Status of the Parish,” in Latin called the “Status Animarum.” I thought you might be interested in recent statistics over the past year, spiritually speaking. Our parish recently reported:

Total Parishioners: 3724 Total Households: 1754 Households who receive Offertory Envelopes: 824 Baptized Infants: 28 Baptized Children: 10 Baptized Adults: 14 Children who made First Holy Communion: 30 Children Confirmed: 39 Marriages: 11 Funerals: 74

Average Mass attendance is usually taken in October of every year, and we will report that later.

Observations:

While there is a large difference between total households and those who receive offertory envelopes, an additional 172 families have opted to use electronic funds transfer for their weekly/monthly giving. We are unable to record cash given on Sundays. If you are not giving regularly, I respectfully ask that you consider making some offering to the Lord for the good of our parish ministries.

We are an aging parish, and funerals increased 14 from last year. Marriages within the Church have remained stable in our parish.

St. Peter’s is a significant presence in our community. Please worship with us regularly!

- Rev. Gregory R. Hite

Prison Ministry Corner

Our prison ministry will go in a different direction this week. Ohio is scheduled to resume executions this Wednesday with the execution of Ronald Phillips. There is always the chance that this execution - and future ones - will

be postponed. We continue to work and pray for an end to the death penalty in our state and in our country. Unless a delay is announced, we will gather this Tuesday evening, July 25, from 7 to 8 p.m. for a Candlelight Vigil (silent prayer) on State Route 13 across from the main entrance to Mansfield Correctional. That site was chosen in

1998 when executions resumed in Ohio; at that time Death Row was located at Mansfield Correctional. We have stood on that site over fifty times since then as Ohio has executed death row inmates in our name. For further details, please contact Lynne at the parish center 419-524-2572 or [email protected].

Landscaping Update

Over the next few weeks, parishioners will notice a new landscaping project being installed at the front and side of the church. This installation will add new color and beauty to the main entrance of the church (along Mulberry Street) and to the south side of the

church (along the main parking lot). Many thanks to all who have helped to make this project possible.

What is Alpha?

After the food there is a talk designed to engage and inspire conversation. Generally 30 minutes in length, the talk will be played as a video. The talks explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity addressing ques-tions such as, who is Jesus?, and how can we have faith?

The Monsignor Edward C. Dunn

Foundation for education

The Msgr. Edward C. Dunn Foundation for Education is an Endowment Fund which was created in 1985 to support Catholic education in St. Peter’s Parish Schools here in Mans-field, Ohio. Its specific purpose is to generate a significant financial resource for the parish in its ongoing effort to pro-mote and maintain this most important ministry of the Cath-olic Church.

As Msgr. Edward C. Dunn said in his own words, “Education is the greatest gift we can give the young people.”

Throughout the 2016/2017 school year, the Dunn Foundation purchased classroom needs such as art supplies, sheet music, and science lab materials.

The foundation also provided tuition assistance through sev-eral donor named funds. The support provided to St. Peter’s School through the Dunn Foundation would not be possible without the generosity of its donors. Thank you to all who have donated to this fund in the past.

Please feel free to contact the Development Office for more information on how you can leave a lasting impact for the students of St. Peter’s by calling 419-524-2572 ext. 2130.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — You taught your people that those who are just must likewise be kind

(Wisdom 12:13, 16-19).

Psalm — Lord, you are good and forgiving (Psalm 86).

Second Reading — The Spirit comes to aid us in our weakness (Romans 8:26-27).

Gospel — Jesus proposes parables to the crowds, teaching them of the reign of God (Matthew 13:24-43 [24-30]).

THE MERCY, POWER, AND LOVE OF GOD

The first reading today, from the book of Wisdom, makes its point over and over, at least five times in five verses! God is mighty, but lenient to all. God’s power is shown in kindness and clemency, not in harshness and condemnation, and those who govern God’s people must govern in the same way, with kindness. This loving kindness and gentleness is not contrary to God’s might, but is a direct result of God’s primacy over all. Who are we, then, to judge what is in the hearts of our fellow Christians and all people, when God commands justice with love and clem-ency?

Likewise, the Holy Spirit makes up for our ignorance of what we need, speak-ing in a language we do not yet understand. But God knows our needs before we do, understands the intercessions of the Spirit, and helps us in our weakness. This is our hope: God’s mercy, power, and love.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

For centuries, the only Eucharistic Prayer we heard as Western Catholics was the old Roman Canon, usually recited in a low voice by the priest, in Latin. By the 1940s, many Catholics were learning to follow along with the actions of the priest by means of a bilingual missal, with Latin on one side and English on the other. Drawings of the priest’s position at the altar, moving from one side to the other, or bowing or standing with uplifted hands at the center, helped the readers stay on track.

The Roman Canon is a long prayer, and since it was done every day for every occasion, priests had a way of galloping through it. Even though long, its structure is fairly simple, with the consecration and sacrifice clearly marked out. Sadly, this sur-viving prayer had triumphed over many treasures of our tradition that emphasized other dimensions of Eucharist. The Constitu-tion on the Sacred Liturgy in 1963 did not call directly for new Eucharistic Prayers, but that direction was inevitable. Discussion began almost immediately, and by 1967 the Vatican approved three new Eucharistic Prayers. In 1974, the Congregation for Worship unveiled the experiment of two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation, and three for Masses with Children. At last, a period of creativity and enrichment had begun.
