REFLECTION: THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what continues to give it creative energy and masterful design. No reli-gion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no matter what name we use, God always transcends our limited ability to understand. God is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Christians believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpressible mystery: God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring forth that creative, saving, sancti-fying love into the world. Today’s scriptures celebrate the mystery of the Trinity and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The LORD, merciful and gracious, rich in kindness and faithfulness (Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9). Psalm — Glory and praise for ever! (Daniel 3). Second Reading — Brothers and sisters, rejoice. Live with one another in peace, and the God of peace will be with you (2 Corinthians 13:11-13). Gospel — God did not send the Son to condemn the world, but to give it abundant life (John 3:16-18). Readings & Reflections

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It is often heard that today’s observance is an “idea feast,” and that it is somewhat difficult to grasp its meaning. Other great solemnities, such as Christmas and Easter, have an easily grasped core. Yet, even though the Trinity is at the heart of our faith, firmly declared in the Creed since the Council of Nicea in 325, we are used to having people shrug and say, “Well, it’s a mystery.” Perhaps it is more helpful to think of this as a “relationship feast,” since it unveils our deepest identity. Dorothy Day was a great social reformer, pacifist, and ardent lover of the Trinity. When people told her that she would certainly be canonized one day (the process is indeed underway), she protested dismissively by remarking that people were raising a fuss just because she was not afraid to talk about God. She loved the Trinity, and treasured the traditional icon for the feast, also known as “The Hospitality of Abraham,” depicting the three angelic be-ings seated at a table tilted toward the viewer and laden with bread and wine. For her, the Trinity revealed the heart of the Catholic life, three C’s if you will: community, communication, and communion. That was not an “idea” for her, but what it means to be created in the image of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

NEW WINDOWS! THANKS TO SO MANY….. Because of the great success of our Trash ‘n Treasure Sales, Saint Paul Parish has been able to fund projects which may otherwise have been difficult. This past week windows were replaced on the lower level of our school/offices; money for this improvement came from last summer’s sale. Eventually we will upgrade the remaining windows once it becomes financially feasible. We thank the Rosary Altar Society, their families, friends, volunteers, and patrons for making this possible!

We are currently in the beginning phase of the 2017 Trash ‘n Treasure Sale when items are collected and organized for the sale in July. All of those involved work extremely hard for 7 weeks to make this endeavor a great success. Not only is it a great opportunity for financial rewards, but it also brings a great sense of camaraderie and accomplishment among all those who help. This year’s sale will benefit our next project which will be an upgrade to the rest room area in the Social Hall to include a handicapped accessible restroom. Thank you for all of your past support, and we look forward to your participation and presence this summer.

ST ANTHONY OF PADUA, OUR OTHER PATRON SAINT Our community has celebrated the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua for over 40 years. The tradition continues in 2017. The Novena started on June 7th and will run through its completion on June 15th. Mass in honor of the saint’s feast day will be celebrated Monday June 12th, followed by distribution of bread, provided by Joe Jioio and blessed at Mass. As our parish grows the reason special attention is given to this saint and his feast day may be cloudy. Many know him through the prayer to locate items that are lost. However, our parish connection to him goes deeper than that.

In 1917 a mission chapel was established in Greensburg under the auspices of Our Lady of Grace Parish and the Pittsburgh Diocese . It was built to provide Roman Catholic Masses and services to the people of the Ludwig sec-tion of Greensburg. Initially the building was used for Sunday School and Catechism. Then on December 18, 1921 the first Mass was said at St. Anthony Mission. It is from this seed that our community and eventually our parish blossomed. Eventually it was enlarged due to a growing congregation, and when the congregation out grew the mission chapel it came up here on the crest of Carbon Road and became St. Paul Parish, also called the Church of St. Paul and St. Paul’s Church.

Monday’s 8:00AM Mass will recognize the feast day of Saint Anthony. The actual feast day is June 13, 2017.
