Non-Trivial Pursuits

Weekly challenge from your Faith Formation Team (12/26/2021) In Lesson ten the old catechism moves on to the question of grace.

111. Q. Is grace necessary to salvation? 112. Q. Can we resist the grace of God? 113. Q. What is the grace of perseverance?

Answer to question 12/19/2021

103A. By grace I mean a supernatural gift of God bestowed on us, through the merits of Jesus Christ, for our salvation. 104A. There are two kinds of grace, sanctifying grace and actual grace. 105A. Sanctifying grace is that grace which makes the soul holy and pleasing to God. 110A. Actual grace is that help of God which enlightens our mind and moves our will to shun evil and do good.

A PARISHIONERS’ PRAYER Almighty God, my parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly if I am. It will be holy if I am. Its pews will be filled if I help fill them. It will do great work if I work. It will be prayerful if I pray. It will make generous gifts to so many causes if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish family of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity and mercy if I — who make it what it is — am filled with the same qualities. Therefore, with the help of God, I will dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be. Bless my journey, Lord God, I will dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be. Bless my journey, Lord God, that I might follow Jesus and build the Church for your glory. Amen.

Here’s how your family can keep

the spirit of Christmas alive all year

People often remark how lovely it would be if Christmas could last all year. It’s a sweet sentiment but most of us tend to believe that once the decorations come

down, life must return to normal. But what if there was a simple way to keep the spirit of Christmas alive in your home all year long? I would suggest that the reason Christmas feels so magical is that, at this time of year, the world decides family time should be important again … encouraging families to revisit special tradi-tions, talk about what makes our lives more meaningful, have fun together and be more intentional about praying and worshipping together and finally, in this season, the world reminds us to do little acts of charity for others. The effect of this season is certainly wonderous, but it isn’t the result of magic. It comes from so many people suddenly doing something different. That feeling we all get at this time of year is created by people — families, in particular — unconsciously connecting with the mission that Church Life invites us to live out consciously every day: 1) prioritizing intimacy over activity; 2) cre-ating and connecting around meaningful daily rituals; and 3) working together to make the lives of people around us a little easier and more pleasant. Instead of waiting for the world to give us permission to do this for a couple of weeks in December, my Christmas wish is that every Christian household would fulfill its prophetic mission to challenge the world to live this way all year long by our example.

My Spiritual 2022 Bucket List

(or make up your own)

Attend First Friday Mass followed by Eucharistic Adoration. Keep the car radio off until I pray for fifteen minutes. Hang out with a parishioner I have never socialized with before. Go to daily Mass at least once per week. Volunteer at least once at a parish program. Contribute to a new charity. Read a biography of a Saint. Go to confession at least twice this year. Attend an Adult Faith Formation program. Write in your own goal.
