Saint of the Week Saint Cunegund

Born around 978, daughter of Siegfried, first earl of Luxembourg, and Hedwig of Germany, Cunegund was given in marriage

to Henry, duke of Bavaria, shortly after elected emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Together with her husband she conducted an exemplary life and, at his death, she ret6ired as a Benedictine nun, laying aside all symbols of power to join the convent of Kaufungen, which she had founded. She died around 1040. The cult of Saint Cunegund was approved by Innocent III in 1200.

St. Cunegund is depicted in regal clothes and often holds a model of the cathedral of Bamberg; on occasion she appears in a monastic habit.

Cunegund is the patron saint of Luxembourg. The name Cunegund is from the German and means “brave in war.”

Please pray for the Church in our Diocese

Heavenly Father, Bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of your Son, so that in Him, with Him, and through Him, we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere.

With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord.

This week we pray especially for:

Michael Iwanski of St. John the Baptist of Marshfield, WI

College IV St. John Vianney Seminary

Prayer Intention of the Week:

That all who have died may have eternal rest, and that all who mourn them may have the Lord’s consolation

2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish · Marshfield

Lent starts in a few days, with Ash Wednesday this week! We welcome this penitential season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving

as we prepare our hearts and souls for the solemn observance of the Easter triduum. Ash Wednesday Masses will be offered at

7:00 a.m. and 8:30 (with Columbus Catholic Schools), and again at 5:30 on Ash Wednesday and each Wednesday during Lent.

Our Lady of Peace will be continuing our habit of the Bread and Broth soup suppers following these Wednesday evening Masses.

You know we’re not supposed to let the left hand know what the

right hand is doing when it comes to our fasting during lent, right? So I probably am not supposed to tell you that I will be

starting my second go-around of a cabbage soup diet starting on Ash Wednesday. So that afternoon, I will make about 8 gallons of it . . . 4 for me, and 4 to share at our first Bread and Broth.

Remember that on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, we are to abstain from any meat and not eat between meals, keeping our

food to one main meal during the day (except for parishioners with health conditions or of advanced years). Even McDonalds

becomes Catholic during Lent! You see them advertising McFisholay sandwiches (or whatever they’re called) every Friday of Lent. Supper clubs advertise their fish fries. Of course

I abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent …...and I generally stay in. There is nothing penitential about a

Friday fish fry in Wisconsin. A friend once told our class back in seminary, “We get out of Easter what we put into Lent.”

Without thinking too hard about God’s graces in proportion to my sacrifices, I think my friend was on to something. We

undertake these disciplines happily because they are the training ground for our souls. If I carry them out in a real desire to turn from sin to Jesus, He becomes more important and I less

important.

Yours, Fr. Berns

From Our Pastor

Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse, or even by yourself? All you need to do is let the ushers know before Mass that you are willing to do it. It would be wonderful to see new faces presenting before the Lord our earthly gifts that become the Eucharist.

Sacraments Baptism - Parents requesting to have a child baptized are invited to call Father Berns directly at 715-384-9414. He will assist with any baptism preparation and scheduling a date.

Reconciliation - Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:30-5:15pm and upon request. Communal Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent.

First Eucharist and Confirmation - Ongoing catechesis is essential in the faith formation of the youth of Our Lady Peace Parish (OLP). Therefore, any child must be enrolled continually from the First Grade, in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP’s Religious Education Programs, to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation.

RCIA Christian Initiation of Adults - Anyone interested in joining the Catholic Church should contact Sister Virdean Meyer at 715-384-3044. Classes begin each Fall.

Marriage - Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to meeting with engaged couples to assist them in marriage preparation. As this preparation takes time, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8-12 months before the wedding.

Anointing of the Sick - If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact Father Berns at 715-384-9414. A Mass of Healing with anointing is celebrated during the year.

New Parishioners - To join our community, please register at the Parish Office or call 715-384-9414 Ext. 2.

“A Dialogue With God” St. Joseph is a master and model of prayer.

Please join us this Tuesday as we begin our Lenten journey by learning from his example, and that of St. John Bosco.

THOUGHTS FROM FR. RAJAN

A man married a beautiful girl. He loved her very much. One day she developed a skin disease. Slowly she started to lose her beauty. It so happened that one day her husband left for a tour. After returning he met with an accident and lost his eyesight, however their married life continued as usual. But as days passed she lost her beauty gradually. The blind husband did not know this and there was not any difference in their married life. He continued to love her and she also loved him very much. One day she died. Her death brought him great sorrow. He finished all her last rites and wanted to leave that town. A man from behind called and said, now how will you be able to walk all alone? All these days your wife used to help you. He replied, I am not blind. I was acting, because if she knew l could see her ugliness it would have pained her more than her disease. So I pretended to be blind. She was a very good wife. I only wanted to keep her happy.

Moral:- *Some times it is good for us to act blind and ignore one another's short comings, in order to be happy*

50TH Wedding Anniversary Celebration

Since August 2000, the Diocese of La Crosse has sponsored 50th Jubilee Wedding Anniversary Celebrations for those couples celebrating fifty years

of marriage. It is a glorious day for these couples who have faithfully lived their wedding vows of fidelity and permanence. It is such a joy to experience the wisdom of these couples who have lived through the joys and sorrows of married love.

These celebrations will be held on Sundays, July 23, 2017 (St. Mary in Altoona), August 6, 2017 (St. Bronislava in Plover), and August 13, 2017 (Christ the King Chapel in La Crosse).

If you are celebrating your 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2017 and would like to attend one of these celebrations, please contact the Parish Office at 715-384-9414 or [email protected] or email [email protected] with your name, address, telephone number and date of your anniversary before Wednesday, March 15, 2017. Thank you for your assistance with this project and congratulations on your milestone anniversary!

Bread and Broth Suppers: Lent begins on Ash Wednesday–March

1, 2017, and will again feature the Bread and Broth suppers after

the 5:30 pm Masses each Wednesday during Lent .

Lenten Regulations: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th

birthday are to abstain, except those with medical conditions, from

meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays during Lent and Good Friday.

In addition to abstaining from meat, Catholics who have celebrated

their 18th birthday, until they celebrate their 59th birthday, are to

fast, except those with medical conditions, on Ash Wednesday and

Good Friday. Those bound by this regulation may eat only one full

meal a day. Two smaller meals are permitted, if necessary, to

maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods

between is not permitted.

CCS has a very active Honors Band program, with over half of the band enrolled in this challenging and fulfilling option. The honors band musicians are required to take the entire normal band

course load, plus they have two added aspects. The first is a performance aspect, where each student must perform either a Class A solo or two Class A small ensembles at the Solo/Ensemble contest. The second is a service aspect. Students learn to give back to the Columbus community by assisting with the summer Beat Camp program. Due to the individualized nature of Beat Camp, the new incoming band students receive one on one attention which allows them to gain a wonderful grasp of the beginning fundamentals of music.

Bread & Broth Wednesdays in Lent One of our beautiful traditions at Our Lady of Peace is that during Lent we gather after

the 5:30 Mass each Wednesday to share a simple meal of homemade soups, bread, cheese, and beverages.

To be able to do this we need volunteers: to make soups and breads,

to set up, serve, or clean up

Sign-up sheets for each week are available at the hospitality desk in the church entrance.

CRS Rice Bowls: As we look ahead to our Lenten journey, may our fasting be a hun-ger for justice, our alms an offering of peace, and our prayers the reflection of

humble and grateful hearts. We ask the Holy Spirit to ac-company us on this journey of encounter as we spend these 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, and CRS Rice Bowl has resources for each one. Pick up your Rice Bowls at the Church entrances this weekend. You can follow along through the days of Lent with the enclosed calendar. An announcement will be in the bulletin about when to return the boxes to Church at the end of the Lenten season.
