St. Nick’s Parish has a new website. The link is www.stnicholas-queens.org

From the Pastor’s Desk... We saw in last Sunday’s Gospel how Jesus fed a great multitude of over 5000

people with five loaves of bread and two fish. He gave them as much food as they needed. They were impressed and satisfied. In today’s Gospel the people

are looking for more bread and more miracles from Jesus. Jesus is trying to

give them something deeper than that.

Chapter six of John’s Gospel is called “the Bread of Life discourse”. There are six questions put to Jesus by the Jews. Three are given in today’s Gospel.

These three indicate unwillingness on the Jewish leaders’ part to know the

truth. Jesus tries to have them realize that they are to go deeper and look be-yond the surface. Material things cannot satisfy our hunger for God. Here are

the three questions:

First Question: Rabbi, when did you get here (Capernaum)? Jesus understands that they are only interested in the material things, so he

teaches them, “Do not look for food that perishes but for the food that endures

for eternal life” (Jn 6:27). This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible. It gives us a lot to reflect on it. Life falls apart when we do not attend to our hunger for

God.

Second Question: What can we do to accomplish the works of God?

Apparently their question shows that they were sincerely seeking the truth, but actually they were seeking some easy way to perform the works of God. Jesus

responds with another basic theme of the Gospel which is the punchline of the entire passage: “This is the work of God that you believe in the one he

sent” (Jn 6:29). They understood that Jesus is claiming to be the Messiah sent

from God. Faith in the person of Jesus is the key to heavenly blessings.

Third Question: What sign can you do? In other words they are saying, “Why we should believe in you?” We believed

in Moses because he gave us Manna from heaven. Jesus tells them that Manna was not a miracle of Moses. It was God’s gift of bread from heaven. God’s

bread gives life to the world. Then Jesus reveals this secret to them, “I am the

bread of life, whoever comes to me will never hunger and whoever believes in me will never thirst” (Jn 6:35).

Like the crowd in Capernaum, we are challenged by Jesus to move beyond the

physical hungers of everyday needs to the deeper search for the true and eter-

nal Bread of Life (Jesus).

God bless you,

Fr. John Francis
