OUR LENTEN JOURNEY

Once again Holy Mother Church invites us into the desert with Jesus Christ on this first Sunday of Lent. Jesus reminds us again and again that we are not alone and that we are not meant to be alone. Jesus wants to be with us in every aspect of our lives.

The focus of Lent is most clearly seen through the eyes of our Elect, those who have been chosen to celebrate the Sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil. These women, men and older children have been preparing for Baptism in a very intentional and intense way for over a year. It is their deep desire to be united with Christ in his death and resurrection to the waters of Baptism and to experience the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. They long to have their spiritual hunger satisfied in the unique expe-rience of Holy Communion.

We, the baptized, journey with them during this time of purification and enlight-enment. Like them, we are called to confront our sin and

scrutinize those aspects of our lives that are not in con-formity to and in union with Jesus Christ and his Church. This is a journey that we are all called to and that we are meant to take together.Through the ancient tradi-tions of prayer, fasting and almsgiving we enter into these 40 days marked with the sign of the cross which will lead us into the Paschal mystery of the crucifixion and resurrection. I suggest that rather than be over-whelmed by trying to do too much “extra,” that we focus – individually, spouses, and families – on only one or two added spiritual practices that will enrich our Lent. These are meant to “augment” the ordinary gifts of daily indi-vidual and communal prayer, reading Scripture, Sunday Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. You will find these “ordinary” practices of the spiritual, Christian life on the flyer you received on Ash Wednesday and which is on our parish website.Specif ic Lenten prayer experiences put together by the Stewardship Council occur every Tuesday, both morning and evening. The topics include: Prayer 101 – Introduction and Refresher; Adoration; Ignatian Examen Prayer; Devotions; and Meditative Prayer. As we learn to pray we are able to encounter God in profoundly personal and communal ways. During the season of Lent, we are invited to spend more time with God in prayer. Our hope is that this PRAYER

FARE for a Heart Healthy Lent will deepen that rela-tionship and strengthen you for service to the Body of Christ.

ADORATIONNext Sunday our Gospel is the account of the Transfiguration of Jesus on the Mount. On Ash Wednesday, 2003 we began Perpetual Adoration – 24/7 prayer in the St. Joseph Chapel. This will continue even throughout construc-tion and renovation. This year, we are asking everyone in the parish to prayerfully consider and then make a commitment to spend one hour each week in ado-ration before the Blessed Sacrament. It is our hope that there would be two or more adorers committed to each hour, every day. Next week, we will highlight certain days and hours when we are most in need of committed adorers. Please prayerfully consider giving to the Lord one hour of your presence in his holy presence. You will find that it is one of the best hours of your week.

“Jesus and the Blessed Sacrament is the most tender of friends with souls who seek to please him. His goodness knows how to proportion itself to the smallest of his creatures as to the greatest of them. Be not afraid then in your solitary conversations, to tell Jesus of your miseries, your fears, your worries, of those who are dear to you, of your projects, and of your hopes. Do so with confidence and with an open heart.” St. Damien de Veuster

PARISH STRATEGIC PLANThe past two weekends I pre-sented the parish Strategic Plan at all the Masses. This is our roadmap for our pres-ent and future ministries. If you did not receive a copy, they are available on the Good News stands and also at the parish office. It is my hope that this document for the guidance of the Pastoral Council and parish staff will also guide us each step along the way in fulfilling our parish Vision 2026.

ALPHADon’t miss out on this awesome opportunity to encounter Christ. Our next Alpha course, which is geared toward young adults and married couples, begins on Wednesday evening February 28, 6:30–8:30pm. You don’t have to be married or a young adult to attend or to invite others to attend. If you are wondering what Alpha is all about, check out our website or simply come to the first evening. You will not be disappointed. Please share this good news and invite as many of your friends who may benefit. I'm looking forward to seeing you there.

CONSTRUCTIONThings are moving ahead quickly outside. Take a peek through the windows and see what’s happening. Stay up-to-date by reading Construction Zone every week in the bulletin. In Christ, through the inter-cession of Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati, I love you.

Construction on the meeting room addition to the Gathering Space that was initially scheduled to begin in January has been rescheduled to start in April. Utility lines on that side of the building need to be relocated and Puget Sound Energy crews are currently behind schedule. The Gathering Space kitchen and adjacent storage room are now closed and unavailable for use. The contractors need to cut trenches into the concrete flooring in those areas to sup-port the plumbing changes to the rest rooms and kitchen. As part of the Faith Raising Campaign the parish agreed to donate the Westside Chapel partition walls to Sacred Heart Parish in Tacoma. They had originally thought they could remove the walls in January. Due to permitting and other delays they will not be able to accept the walls until October. We wish to thank everyone for your prayerful support in

keeping all the men and women safe as they work to pro-vide a wonderful new worship environment for us.Fridays in Lent we will pray the Stations of the Cross in the downtown church following the 9am Mass and again

at 6:30pm. If you would like to pray the Stations outdoors, meet on Fridays at 3pm at the Westside Chapel on Feb. 16 & 23 and Mar. 2, 9, 16 & 23.The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available at the Westside Chapel at 11am Thursdays, as well as Saturday mornings at 9:45am. At the downtown church, Reconciliation begins at 5:30pm Friday evenings and 3pm Saturdays.

Beginning February 15, daily Mass will be celebrated at the Westside Chapel. The exception will be Fridays, which will remain downtown (and the February 21 Catholic Advocacy Day Mass in the morning). You will be notified of any further exceptions.

WHAT SHOULD I DO FOR LENT? Pope Francis' 10 Tips

1. Get rid of the lazy addiction to evil“[Lent] is a ‘powerful’ season, a turning point that can foster change and conversion in each of us. We all need to improve, to change for the better. Lent helps us and thus we leave behind old habits and the lazy addiction to the evil that deceives and ensnares us.” – General Audience, March 5, 2014

2. Do something that hurts“Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts; no self-denial is real without this dimension of pen-ance. I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt.” – Lenten Message, 2014

3. Don’t remain indifferent“Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience. God is not indifferent to our world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation.” –Lenten Message, 2015

4. Pray: Make our hearts like yours!“During this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask the Lord: ‘Fac cor nostrum secundum cor tuum’: Make our hearts like yours (Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). In this way we will receive a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference.” – Lenten Message, 2015

5. Take part in the Sacraments“Lent is a favorable time for letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like him. This happens whenever we hear the word of God and receive the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist. There we become what we receive: the Body of Christ.” – Lenten Message, 2015

6. Prayer“In the face of so many wounds that hurt us and could harden our hearts, we are called to dive into the sea of prayer, which is the sea of God’s boundless love, to taste his tenderness. Lent is a time of prayer, of more intense prayer, more pro-longed, more assiduous, more able to take on the needs of the brethren; intercessory prayer, to intercede before God for the many situations of poverty and suffering.” – Homily, March 5, 2014(Continued pg. 7)

The Marriage Course is for any couple wanting to strengthen their relationship. It doesn’t matter if they have a strong relationship or are struggling,  if they are married or cohabiting.

Saint Michael Young Adults, we need your help to reach our peers both in our pews and outside our walls to provide them a chance to explore the Christian faith, ask ques-tions and share their point of view – wherever they are in the world.

The Young Adult Course. Alpha is designed particularly for young adults who would not describe them-selves as Christians, church-goers or simply find themselves being in need of a renewal of faith. This ministry is based on the pattern found in the New Testament of people bringing their friends, family and work col-leagues to meet Jesus!

EDGE: What We See. God entrusted humanity with the care of creation. He revealed to us that He has a plan, purpose, and design for everything. Come learn about God's design. Life Teen: I doubt It! (Continued from pg. 4)

7. Fasting“We must be careful not to practice a formal fast, or one which in truth ‘satisfies’ us because it makes us feel good about ourselves. Fasting makes sense if it questions our security, and if it also leads to some benefit for others, if it helps us to cultivate the style of the Good Samaritan, who bends down to his brother in need and takes care of him.” – Homily, March 5, 2014

8. Almsgiving“Today gratuitousness is often not part of daily life where everything is bought and sold. Everything is calculated and measured. Almsgiving helps us to experience giving freely, which leads to freedom from the obsession of possessing, from the fear of losing what we have, from the sadness of one who does not wish to share his wealth with others.” – Homily, March 5, 2014

9. Help the Poor“In the poor and outcast we see Christ’s face; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ. Our efforts are also directed to ending violations of human dignity, discrim-ination and abuse in the world, for these are so often the cause of destitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they take priority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing.” – Lenten Message, 2014

10. Evangelize“The Lord asks us to be joyous heralds of this message of mercy and hope! It is thrilling to experience the joy of spread-ing this good news, sharing the treasure entrusted to us, consoling broken hearts and offering hope to our brothers and sisters experiencing darkness.” – Lenten Message, 2014 You probably won’t be able to take huge steps forward in all of these areas. Instead, pick a couple that stand out to you and try to find practical ways to grow in your love of God and your love of your neighbor.

LENTEN SMALL GROUPSWeek 2: Childlike faith with no fear! This week's Lenten reflection is by Andrew Goldstein, Steward for Music Ministries. Andrew points out to us that this week's readings teach us to approach our faith and our lives with a childlike ambition. We see this in the Gospel with the response of Peter, James and John after the Transfiguration: "It is good that we are here! Let us build tents!" We are reminded in our second reading to have no fear when we read, "If God is for us then who can stand against us?" This Lent let us try to approach our faith and life with childlike ambition and a fear-less energy, knowing that God the Father has us in His arms.If you were unable to join the 350+ parishioners preparing for Lent in small groups, you can follow along by using the reflection sheets and videos posted on the website at saint-michaelparish.org/learn/small-groups.
