MASS SCHEDULE & INTENTIONS
PASTOR’S NOTEBOOK – May 18, 2014 – Fifth Sunday of Easter
The month of May for us as Catholics is a special time to reflect upon the role of Mary in the life of the Church and in our own spiritual lives. I am especially grateful this May of how
blessed we were to have our brother Dean ordained to the transitional diaconate on May 4th and to entrust him and his priesthood to the loving care of Mary. May she be his companion leading him to greater and greater service to Jesus her Son in the Church.
May is always a poignant month for me personally. May 16th was the 45th anniversary of my mother Ruth’s death. It is hard for me to fathom this reality. I have been thinking of her and praying for her these past days of May. Being without family close by, my relationship with you
as your pastor and shepherd is integral to who I am as a person and as a priest. I am grateful to those of you who have reached out to me in friendship, care, love and concern over these past years. You are a gift to me and I am most grateful.
Then, on May 17th, I celebrated my 39th anniversary of ordination, a reality that is much more evident to me. I give thanks to God for this incredible gift of priesthood and the opportuni-ty to serve his Church and all of you. What a blessing. I want to thank you for your prayerful
support these past years as your pastor. You have helped shape my soul and the heart of my priesthood. You are all a very special part of who I am. I am most grateful.
In light of these personal reflections, I have an important request. Next Sunday, May
25th , we will have an opportunity to offer “names for leadership” for our councils and commis-sions, as well as for the CORE Teams of our Edge and LifeTeen programs. Leadership in the Church is a Marian virtue. It is a willingness to be open to the call of God to serve, to give of
oneself on behalf of others so as to allow the life and will of God to unfold in our midst. As lead-ers, we collaborate in helping to bring about God’s plan and vision for St. Michael Parish in very
real and life-giving ways for one another.
I ask two things of you this coming week. One, please pray the following prayer each day.
You may wish to do so individually or with your spouse or family. Secondly, as you pray, ask the Lord if you and/or someone in the Parish is being called to leadership. Let us work with the Lord in raising up men and women of service. Let us also pray that like Mary, they will say “yes” to
the Lord’s call.
Prayer for Leadership Discernment
Gracious and ever faithful God,
we give You thanks for Your loving guidance and
care for us here at Saint Michael Parish.
Thank you for all the ways that You have nourished our faith,
given us strength, and cared for us each day.
We pray that You will raise up men and women from among us
to lead and guide Your Parish family as You would want.
May each of us be open to Your will in our lives
and accept the challenge of giving of ourselves in loving service
as did Mary, Your Son’s Mother.
May our lives be a “Yes” to You and Your will.
We earnestly make our prayer in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2014 RESULTS
Please return your pledge envelope so we can meet our Parish goal!
It is our hope that ALL our Parish families will participate by completing an envelope.
Our Annual Catholic Appeal goal: $284,050
% of goal reached so far: 68%
Participation goal—households: 1,250
Pledge Envelopes returned: 508
% of participating households goal: 41%
Remember, our Parish goal is $50,000 over and above the Archdiocesan goal shown above. And,
every dollar in excess of the Archdiocesan goal comes back to us! We can do this! We can reach
the Appeal goal AND fund our parish projects of completing the outdoor play area for the school and
entire parish to use, plus provide support for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and youth ministries
such as the Youth Migrant Project. These ministries do such good work in helping our community,
as well as forming our young people in the faith and making the values of Catholic Social Teaching
real in their lives. But we need YOU! Every Parish in the Archdiocese is part of the wider Church
and comes together every year to support over 60 crucial ministries. We’ll be sending
another mailing out next week, so please return your envelope and save us a stamp! If you’ve
already returned your envelope or made your pledge online, thank you very much.

Are You Seeing Red? You may have noticed our upper parking lot is receiv-ing some much needed attention! Our facilities staff is busy repairing and painting curbs in the fire lanes in an effort to highlight the need to keep these lanes open for emergency vehicles. When responding to medical and other life-threatening emergencies, every second counts. There is no time to try and locate individuals who have parked in the emergency lanes to have them move their vehicles. Please consider using our lower parking lot if the des-ignated parking stalls in the upper lot are full. By park-ing in the fire lanes in the upper parking lot you could be placing all building occupants in danger. Please remember to use the designated “Enter” and “Exit” driveways (hint: the “exit” driveway is closest to 11th Avenue). Doing so really helps with traffic man-agement—especially between Masses!

HOLY HOUR IN ADORATION
At Gethsemane, while suffering in his Hour of Agony,
Jesus prayed for strength To fulfill the will of His Father
Jesus was comforted by an Angel from heaven.
Similarily, Jesus desires to share His love and compassion with us during Adoration.

of His great love. He soothes wounds, and helps to heal our pain.
He brings us His joy.
He listens to our heart in quiet prayer.
We ask you to give Jesus your time as an Adorer.
Please offer Him an hour of your week, any day, any time. For more details, contact Roger Theine 357-6246, [email protected]

"If you want peace, work for justice." -- Pope Paul VI
Dear Parishioners,
As we approach the end of the school year, I would like to provide a brief update about my work
with the Archdiocese of Seattle over the course of this year. As an Archdiocesan school, we are
part of an amazing network of 75 Catholic schools in the Western Washington area. Representing
St. Michael and our South Sound region, I have attended a variety of Archdiocesan principals’
meetings this year. I have benefited from informative meetings and trainings as part of the new
principals’ group. I have also enjoyed serving in a leadership capacity as the executive principal
from the South Sound region on the Executive Principals’ Committee. It has been a joy to collabo-
rate with both our local Catholic school principals and those from throughout the archdiocese.
Through all of these experiences this year, I have been struck by the clarity of vision for the future
of Catholic schools in our archdiocese. I am enthusiastic about our new strategic plan: From
Strength to Strength, A Plan for 21st Century Schools in the Archdiocese of Seattle. After many
years of research and development, our new strategic plan will be implemented next year to shep-
herd the growth of our schools. The plan focuses on four areas: Strengthening Catholic identity;
excellent curricula, teachers, and school leaders; an accessible and welcoming community; and
wise stewardship through planning, governance, funding and marketing. I am thrilled for the guid-
ance and wisdom contained in this plan and am confident that it will help to make St. Michael Parish
School even stronger, along with strengthening our entire Catholic school system! More infor-
mation about the strategic plan can be found at http://www.ocsww.org
You may have noticed that our school’s front office underwent a “makeover” last week. The Pham
family generously donated beautiful chairs, tables and desks for the school offices and faculty
lunchroom. Thank you Thien and Xuan Pham for your generosity!
If you are interested in learning how your child will benefit from the gift of a Catholic education
here at your Parish school, please contact the school office for a tour today!
Blessings,
Connor Geraghty, Principal
LOVE IN THE LITTLE THINGS
Words of gratitude to the many parishioners who are actively
involved in Social Ministry here at St. Michael: Your commitment
and generosity largely happen quietly and bear fruit behind the
scenes. Here is a perfect example: Last weekend, Paul, Gary and
Doug helped to deliver donated bunk beds to two elementary school
boys who came here alone from El Salvador to join their parents,
who had come ahead of them seeking work and a better life. They
now all live in a one room apartment in Olympia. The parents had
given their only bed to the boys and had been sleeping on the floor
since they arrived. This was their first real bed….and a fortress to
play in! Wow, what a difference this “little” gesture made! The
father, in tears expressed his appreciation on behalf of his entire
family. "Thanks, all of you, a thousand times and forever!"
