Seventh Sunday of Easter

CLERGY CHANGES throughout the Diocese officially take place in June. Bishop Matano already has informed those priests who will be moving on to another assignment. Father Erick V iloria has been assigned to Our Lady of Peace Parish (St. Francis DeSales & St. Stephen Church-

es) in Geneva, New York. Father Erick did his deacon year in Geneva, prior to coming to Auburn. Assigned to St. Mary’s Church and to Ss Mary & Martha Parish as a parochial vicar is Father Justin Miller. Father Miller, ordained two years ago, is currently serving as a parochial vicar at St. Joseph Church and Holy Spirit Church in Penfield, New York. These assignments take effect on Tuesday, June 26th. Coming to St. Mary’s and to Ss Mary & Martha for the summer months this year is newly ordained transitional Deacon Matthew Walter, who will do ten weeks of pastoral ministry within the two parishes. Also present during July and August will be Father Joseph Osei Bonsu who will be giving the Visiting Missionary Appeal this year. Auburn has become a very welcoming place for newly ordained priests, seminarians in training and visiting priests from other lands. It’s all due to the spirit of hospitality among the parishioners of St. Mary’s, St. Francis and St. Hyacinth!

FROM THE PASTOR 13 May 2018

You may have heard the story about Jesus checking with St. Peter as he was tending the pearly gates. Peter looked a little bummed, so Jesus asked what’s wrong. Peter said, “I try to do my job. If peo-ple show up and want in but don’t look ready, I tell them to get a little more purified, then come back. I close the gate behind them.” Jesus asked, “So what’s the problem?” Peter responded, “I hate to tell you this, but some of them sneak around to the back door and your mother lets them in.”

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protec-tion, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; be-fore thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

May is the month of Mary. As is our custom, we will have our annual May Crowning Ceremony at the end of the 9:45 Mass today. Participating in the ceremony will be members of the Rosary & Scapular Society as well as members of the First Communion class. Today is also Mother’s Day in the United States and Canada and dozens of other countries. Loving God, as a mother gives life and nour-ishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE BREAD OF LIFE: FOUN-

DATIONS OF A EUCHARISTIC SPIRITUALITY: Dr. Matthew Kuhner, will offer eight spiritual talks at St Mary's Church Hall leading up to the Feast of Corpus Christi. tween the talks. A free lunch will be provided to those who sign up for lunch by calling St Mary's 252 9545 at least 24 hours prior to each Wednesday.

WEAR SOMETHING RED next Sunday. It’s Pentecost. Let the church be on fire with the love of the Holy Spirit!

MEMORIAL DAY is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2018 in this same year as St. Mary’s is ob-

serving its 150 anniversary. So it’s fitting that we as a parish par-ticipate in the Memorial Day Pa-

rade in Auburn on May 28th. Those wishing to walk in the pa-

rade should assemble on E. Gene-

see Street near St. Alphonsus Church at 10:30 am. The banner with our anniversary logo will lead our group. For further infor-mation, call Bill Staley at 315-440-9523.

Thank you for your regular and make-up sacrifices.

DEACON'S CORNER: Merton goes on in the second section of The Living Bread to show how "in the sacrifice of the Eucharist... we are mys-

tically present at the Holy Supper ... and mystically (united), into the sac-

rifice of the cross". We enter into the sacrifice of Christ not as victims but interiorly in "justice and mercy and goodness" by offering ourselves to God in atonement and the desire to change. "This sacrifice plunges us into the very life of God... not by thinking or imagining but by loving." The Mass, Merton reminds us, "is the greatest of all acts of worship" and is "our possession, our inheritance... our sacrifice" but most importantly and "above all it is pleasing to God". The fruit of this gift is "our love for one another, which is signified by the Eucharist and is the principal effect of this great sacrament". ~ Deacon Dennis Donahue

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, With this letter, I am pleased to announce next weekend of May 19th and 20th as Diocesan Mission Sunday. By coincidence, it is also the Solemnity of Pentecost which serves as a very appropriate reminder of the missionary nature of the Church which received its charter and its life-giving principle, the Holy Spirit, on the first Pentecost. The Diocese of Rochester has been keenly aware of its responsibility to share the love and fire of Pentecost with our brothers and sisters, especially in Brazil and Chile. May I ask you next Pentecost Sunday for your prayers and financial gift in support of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brazil and the Sisters of Mercy in Chile. +Salvatore R. Matano

For the right of another . . . is the expression of God’s love and God’s will. ~ Thomas Merton (1915-68)

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS across our country are facing many chal-lenges today, mostly due to de-

clining enrollments. All this comes at a time when our society so desperately needs Catholic schools. This is why we are form-

ing a Memorare Army and are asking for your prayers. Will you join in praying 100 Memorares for an increase in enrollment at St. Joseph School & Tyburn Academy? We are praying one Memorare a day for 100 days be-

ginning May 8. We will end our prayer campaign on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption. A copy of the Memorare Prayer is on page 2 of the bulletin. Our goal is to have 100 people en-

rolled. That means that 10,000 prayers will be said for the fu-

ture growth of our schools! Registration currently is taking place at St. Joseph School and Tyburn Academy. Call or stop by St. Joseph School at 89 E. Gene-

see Street or Tyburn Academy at 17 Clymer Street for more infor-mation.

HELP IS NEEDED to work in the kitchen once a month at BIN-GO. It means serving hotdogs, hamburgers, French fries, donuts and soda at the counter to BINGO players. We could also use one or more cooks, again only once a month. If interested in volunteer-ing, call the parish office at 315-

252-9545.

CINDERELLA, a musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein, will be performed by students from Ty-burn Academy at the West End Theatre (formerly West Middle School) on Genesee Street on Fri-day & Saturday, May 18 & 19 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, May 20 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $12 for gen-eral admission, $10 for seniors/students and $5 for children under 12. All are invited.
