BISHOP DAVID J. WALKOWIAK ASKS US TO PRAY FOR OUR SEMINARIANS

Loving God, raise up dedicated leaders who will shepherd your people and guide them to your Son. Give generous and willing hearts to the seminari-ans of our Diocese who have heard your call to live a life of service to the Church. Help us to encourage and support them as they strive to become priests who are models of disci-pleship, possessors of wisdom and on fire with love for your people. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

We especially pray for: Logan C. Weber

Valentine’s Dinner and Dance: We would like to thank everyone who helped with the Valentine’s Dinner and Dance this year. We had 50 couples from our cluster parishes who enjoyed a night of great food, dancing and friendship. Thanks go out to Cathie VanGessel, our church secretary, for bulletin inserts and advertising; Jeff & Carolyn Johnson and John & Denise Anderson who sold tickets at St. Michaels, Jim & Peggy Lothschutz, John & Maureen Carmody, Gary & Cindy Sabo, Arlyn & Louann Doornbos, and Dennis & Cathy Goosen who helped set up; Leo & Donna Raap and Paul & Kim Lothschutz who helped clean up. Thanks to the donation of beautiful roses and chocolates from Sunnyslope Floral and Gary Sabo, which we raffled off. Most of all, thank you to the couples and Fr. Phil Sangraw for coming that even-ing. It would not have been successful without you. Valentine’s Dance Committee / Rob & Lori Rander and Dave & Vicki Benedetti

Pre-School thru 2nd grade Children’s Liturgy / 11AM Mass In today’s Gospel, we shared with the children that God keeps his promise of showing us love and mercy in the person of Jesus Christ. As Jesus strug-gled with the temptations of the devil in the desert, Jesus came to a clearer understanding of himself and of his mission. After forty days of fasting and prayer in the desert, confronting temptations to abandon or deny his mission, Jesus emerges with a much clearer idea of and a deeper commitment to his mission. Yes, Jesus is fully divine. He is also fully human too. Church teach-ing declares that Jesus was “like us in all things except sin.” Temptation, however, doesn’t become sin until we give in to it. The Gospel makes it clear that Jesus never did. When we struggle to do what is right in the face of powerful temptation to do wrong, we can take comfort in knowing that Jesus knows exactly what that experience is like. This season of Lent is a time for us to turn away from sin and to resist temptation, to recognize that we can change our lives and decide not to make bad choices. This Wednesday, February 21, during Religious Education class time Fr. Ayub will give an explanation of the Sacrament of the Eucharist to the sec-ond graders and their parents. They will also participate in a Church scaven-ger hunt. Fr. Ayub will spend additional time visiting classrooms. Next Sunday, February 25, is the Confirmation Candidate and Sponsor Re-treat from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. here at St. Mary's hall.

May God bless you with a Happy Lent! Congratulations to Mikaelyn Britt on making her First Confession last Saturday! May the Love of Jesus be always in her heart! 1st-7th Grade Classes- Wednesday, Parish Hall / 6:15- 7:30 pm 8th Grade Confirmation Classes -Wednesday, Parish Hall 6:45- 8:30 pm

Should I attend Mass if I'm sick? Guidelines for flu season

Wherever two or more people gather, some sharing of germs is inevitable. When Catholics gather in Jesus’ name to celebrate the Eucharist, our first concern is sharing our gratitude, our faith and our belief in Christ among us. However, with the cold and flu season at its height, each of us has the responsibility of taking precau-tions to prevent the spread of these illnesses by:

Washing hands frequently and for the appropriate length of time using soap & water

Covering up using the upper part of your sleeve or a kleenex when coughing/sneezing In the event of a severe flu outbreak in our community, stricter guidelines may be issued. Here are some things to keep in mind when it comes to the flu and Mass: Should I come to Mass? The obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and other holy days of obligation is the ordinary expectation for Roman Catholics (Canon 1247). However, extraordinary cir-cumstances such as sickness or severe weather excuse the faithful from this obligation. If you suspect you have the flu or are suffering from a serious cold, please stay at home and do not risk spreading infection to others. Holding hands during the Lord's Prayer Well-intentioned folks introduced this custom into parishes in the 1980s. Although holding hands is a beautiful expression of people united in prayer, the gesture is not envisioned in any Church documents governing liturgy. Thus, no one is required to hold hands. It is very fitting to pray the “Our Father” in the orans position with your palms lifted upward, or with your hands placed together in prayer. The sign of peace Please don’t be offended if someone chooses not to shake hands with you during the sign of peace. An appropriate gesture for those who are concerned about spreading the flu virus might be to strive for eye contact rather than physical contact. You could clasp your hands together and bow gently to those around you, and with a smile say “Peace be with you,” or “Peace of Christ.” Receiving Holy Communion Roman Catholics believe that both the body and the blood of Christ are contained in the Holy Eucharist under the form of the consecrated host. But the Church encourages reception of the cup at Mass as a fuller expression of the Last Supper and Christ’s precious blood poured out for us in sacrifice. If you are feeling sick, please receive Holy Communion in the hand, rather on the tongue, and refrain from receiv-ing Communion from the cup. It is not appropriate to dip your host into the cup, as this is irreverent and can contaminate the cup. Pregnant women and persons with compromised immune systems If you’ve been told by your physician/medical advisor that you are particularly susceptible to infection or to complications due to flu in particular, please refrain from practices that might make you sick, includ-ing shaking hands, receiving Holy Communion on the tongue, drinking the Precious Blood from the chalice, etc

Next week we begin Catholic Services Appeal 2018. Your support of CSA will benefit both parish and diocesan ministries, including training our future priests, the ongoing education of teachers and faith formation staff, proclaiming Christ’s message through the media, evangelizing our youth, and providing assistance to those struggling with family issues, hunger, and homelessness. Please prayerfully consider how sharing your gifts will benefit many – in our parish and far beyond. Next week we will learn more about the specific programs CSA supports. I look forward to your participation and working together to accomplish more of our Lord’s work.
