ARK LIBRARY: This month the Ark Library is featuring selections from our “Bereavement” book shelf. There are many interesting and helpful books on dealing with death and dying, including several books especially for children. The Ark Library is open this weekend following all Masses. Join us to browse through the many books and videos that our Ark Library has to offer. BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING: Camillus Ministry blood pressure screening is held this weekend in the parish center after all Masses.

NEEDED AT MILTON FOOD PANTRY: We are in need of two volunteers to work Wednesdays from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. every other month. The pantry also needs someone on Wednesday’s from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. in October and November to help sign people up for Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets. To volunteer or for further information, call the pantry at 868-1166 or Gail Slepekis at 868-7461.
LIFESAVERS FOR LIFE: Lifesavers for Life weekend is THIS WEEKEND, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Lifesavers will be sold after all masses and the proceeds from this drive will be donated to the Pregnancy Help Line in Janesville.
SCOOPIE NIGHT: Join us at Culver’s in Newville for Scoopie Night on Wednesday, October 12th from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. 10% of sales during that time will be donated to Edgerton Care Center. For more information, contact Diane Reed at 868-4205.
ST. MARY CEMETERY DECORATIONS: It’s that time of year again to remove all summer decorations from the cemetery. Please take care of this by October 15th. All items left in the cemetery after October 15th will be picked up and disposed of by the cemetery caretaker.
The Krausse Faith Group is coordinating a “Brown Bag Sunday” to help re-stock the Milton Food Pantry shelves!
Please bring a brown bag with donations when you come for Mass. The pantry is in need of general food items and also paper and grooming
products (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant …).

FROM THE HUMAN LIFE COMMITTEE: If you are like most people, you are somewhat confused about the debate on "stem cell research." A stem cell is a human cell which is capable of growing into any type of cell in the body. These cells have been used to treat leukemia, sickle cell anemia, stroke, spinal cord injuries and more. There are two sources of stem cells: adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells. The difference in these two stem cells is at the core of the debate, for in obtaining embryonic stem cells from a human embryo, a human life is taken. This is NOT a debate about whether or not research should be done to assist the fight against disease. The debate is about what the source of the stem cells should be. The Church does not oppose all research, only those methods that involve taking a human life. Below is a comparison of adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells. Keep in mind that the use of adult stem cells does not require the taking of human life. It is also important to note that as of this time, it is adult stem cells that have proven to be effective in treating multiple diseases, whereas embryonic stem cell research has not shown the same promise.
Adult Stem Cells 1. Adult stem cells are much more accessi-ble than embryonic, being found through-out the human body including fat cells and the umbilical cord. They can also be grown from a patient’s own body which may limit immunological problems. 2. Adult stem cells are more controllable than embryonic stem cells in their ability to form certain cell types. 3. Adult stem cells have not been shown to cause tumors.
Embryonic Stem Cells 1. Embryonic stem cells are obtained by taking a 5-7 day old human embryo and extracting the inner cell mass. These cells are then cultured and given growth factors to grow into specific types of cells. Without the inner cell mass, the embryo dies and thus, a human life. Embryos cre-ated in the process of in vitro fertilization are especially vulnerable because there are usually more embryos created than are implanted in the mother. The remaining “excess” embryos are often frozen for pos-sible use later, and in many cases, specifi-cally their embryonic stem cells. 2. Embryonic stem cell development pro-duces a cell that is more erratic and less predictable than an adult stem cell. 3. Embryonic stem cells have been found to form tumors in animal experiments.

The Second Reading
The second reading, which follows the psalm
(frequently omitted in children’s liturgies), is taken
from the letters of St. Paul and others. Hence, they
used to be called “epistles.” Sometimes this reading
is taken from the Book of Revelation. Most often
they are exhortations or explanations given by St.
Paul to the various communities at which he had
ministered. Again, they are a faith witness from those who have gone before. They
speak to us the same messages that were deemed necessary in the early church.

The church has consistently taught that human life must be respected at its very origin: “Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of concep-tion. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person – among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2270;cf. Congregation for the Doc-trine of the Faith, Donum Vitae I) We need to reflect on the gift of human life itself, and then everything about the issues of embryonic stem cell research becomes clear. It is our responsibility to help protect the weak and the vulnerable, and none being more vulnerable than the human embryo.

TAIZE PRAYER: As we settle into the comfort of fall routines, we look forward to a return to a “time apart” at Nativity of Mary that is at once familiar and new. ADULT CATHOLIC SPIRIT CLUB: Will meet at noon on Wednesday, October 12 in St. John Vianney’s Marian Hall. Please bring a dish to share and your own table service. At 1:00 p.m. Sister Connie Fahey, Certified Spiritual Director, will give a talk entitled “The Woman at the Well”. Sister Connie has traveled to Africa on several occasions, ministering to people often in areas of severe poverty. She presently conducts a Centering Prayer service each week for our Janesville Cluster. JANESVILLE CATHOLIC WOMEN’S CLUB CARD PARTY DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS: Will hold its 2011 Card Party to benefit our annual scholarship at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 17 at St. John Vianney in the Commons, located at 1250 E. TEC RETREAT IS COMING TO EDGERTON: The Diocese of Madison offers five TEC retreats a year. The next one will be held from Oct. 28-30 at St. Joseph’s in Edgerton. Fr. Dave Timmerman, pastor of St. Joseph, will be the Spiritual Director of this retreat. TEC (Together Encountering Christ) is a profound and unique retreat designed specifically for those who are at least a junior in high school, but all young and not so young adults are also highly encouraged to attend. The Kairos TEC program started in our diocese in 1985, with now over 2600 participants. We in the TEC community hope you will consider being a part of this awesome experience.
