PASTOR’S PARISHABLES
“Consecrated life” is one of the many facets of the gem
of our rich Catholic life. Here in SS Peter & Paul & St.
Mary’s, we have a special appreciation for it & take
special pride because of the 12 sisters & the priest who
are living the consecrated life & who are from our parish-
es or who have special connections with us. In 2015, we
gave them a special place because that year was desig-
nated by Pope Francis as a Year of Consecrated Life. (In
1997, Pope John Paul instituted an annual celebration of
consecrated life to be celebrated worldwide to highlight
the important place of consecrated life in the Church.
Consecrated life is getting a place of honor on this day,
July 7, in our parishes because 1 of those 12, Sr. Cecilia
Marie Warner SSND, is celebrating her golden jubilee.
She lives & teaches in Glendale AZ but is including a
visit to her home parish of SS. Peter & Paul in her
renewal of vows. Her celebration is
our celebration too. Sr. Cecilia is a
sister of Dave, Dennis & Steve of
our parish & also of Sr. Mary
Warner SSND who teaches at San
Jose State University in California.
Pope John Paul II wrote of the
different forms of consecrated life as "the many branches
which sinks its roots into the Gospel & brings forth
abundant fruit in every season of the Church's life." Just
so you know—if you don’t already, these diverse forms
of consecrated life include: Monastic Life, the Orders of
Virgins, Hermits, Institutes completely devoted to
contemplation, Apostolic Religious Life, Secular
Institutes, Societies of Apostolic Life, & new or renewed
forms of the consecrated life. (Each form is described in
the Catechism of the Catholic Church if you’re interested
in specifics.)
“Consecrated life” might not be a term familiar to all of
us. It’s different from my life as a diocesan (“secular”)
priest. (I hope not too secular.) The Catholic Catechism
defines consecrated life as “characterized by the public
profession of the evangelical counsels of poverty,
chastity, & obedience, in a stable state of life recognized
by the Church" (944). In the more legal language of the
Church’s Code of Canon Law, it’s "a stable form of living
by which the faithful, following Christ more closely under
the action of the Holy Spirit, are totally dedicated to God
who is loved most of all, so that, having been dedicated
by a new and special title to his honor, to the building up
of the Church, and to the salvation of the world, they
strive for the perfection of charity in the service of the
kingdom of God and, having been made an outstanding
sign in the Church, foretell the heavenly glory" (573§1).
And that’s why I call the consecrated life one of the
facets of the gem of our rich Catholic life.
We continue our summer Series on the Liturgy of the
Hours today, inspired by June 24’s Canticle of Zechariah,
father of John the Baptist. (His “Benedictus” is the gospel
canticle of the Church’s Morning Prayer each day.) For
the sake of our greater familiarity with this part of our
Catholic life: The Liturgy of the Hours is an established
form & order of prayer consisting of psalms, hymns,
prayers, scriptural & spiritual readings composed by the
Church for chant or recitation at stated times every day.
The Liturgy of the Hours is unique in the liturgical life of
the Church because “it consecrates to God the whole
cycle of day & night, as it has done from early Christian
time” (“General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours,”
10). It is designed for celebration in common but is also
regularly prayed by individuals—like those in consecra-
ted life & diocesan priests & also a surprising number of
lay people, including some right here in our own parishes.
The current version of the Hours (also known as the
Divine Office), was promulgated by Pope Paul VI in
1970 & is a revision by decree of the Second Vatican
Ecumenical Council for use by the Roman Catholic
Church. (In his promulgation, Pope Paul VI said that
Vatican II “treated the liturgy as a whole, & the Hours in
particular, with such thoroughness & skill, such
spirituality & power, that there is scarcely a parallel to it
in the entire history of the Church” (VI). (No faint praise!)
I didn’t realize in 1970 the significance of the revision;
I was only ½ way through my seminary years at that
point. What I did recognize, however, was the
improvement, not only in translation, of the revision over
its predecessor. In 1966 I’d been introduced to the Hours
& for 4 years at that point had gotten acquainted.
A footnote: I notice in Sr. Cecilia Warner’s golden
jubilee invitation the opening words of the Canticle of
Mary (the “Magnificat”), “God has done great things for
us & holy is his name.” Mary’s Canticle, called the
Magnificat after its 1st word in Latin, is the gospel
canticle of the Church’s Evening Prayer each day & so a
counterpart of Morning Prayer’s Benedictus.
We’re planning some improvements in the kitchen in
St. Mary’s church. Those of you familiar with that space
will appreciate the upgrade: We’re adding a cabinet (by
the telephone) for cleaning supplies, vacuum etc.; also a
smaller cabinet by the frig for the KC’s items; also new
counter tops (island, serving counter, U); also backsplash
around the cabinets & the back sink. The women made
proposals & our Leader Group brainstormed over it &
gave the go-ahead. We’ll have to have an … open kitchen some day.
Ponderable: “Do not be daunted immediately by fear &
run away from the road that leads to salvation. It is
bound to be narrow at the outset” (St. Benedict, whose
feastday is Wednesday, July 11).

CATHOLIC CHARITIES of Southern Minnesota has an
immediate opening for a full-time Parish Social Ministry

Catholic parishes in the five county Mankato Deanery
respond to local community needs and work for social
justice. This is an exciting opportunity for a great
communicator with strong interpersonal skills who has solid
knowledge of and passion for Catholic social teaching and
parish social ministry. The preferred candidate would have a
B.A. in the human services field or theology, & must be a
practicing Catholic who understands and supports the values
of the Catholic Church. Candidate must be able to work
independently, take initiative, multi-task, and possess great
judgment, maturity, and the ability to think systemically.
Experience in community organizing, gerontology, or
volunteer recruitment is a plus. Please email resume, cover
letter, and list of three work-related references to Tom
Parlin, at [email protected] by Monday, July 16, 2018.
St. Mary’s would like to extend an invitation to
members of both parishes to help celebrate St. Mary’s
125th anniversary!! It will be held Sunday, August 12,
beginning with mass at 10:00am. Program to follow
upstairs, and meal to be served at noon. The meal is free-
--compliments of St. Mary’s, but tickets will be handed
out prior to the celebration beginning in mid-July, so that
we have an idea of number attending the meal. Watch for
the announcement in the bulletin when they become
available! There will be seating in the Parish Hall, as well
as outside beneath a tent, so we have plenty of room for
everyone! Continued updates will be posted on the
website and in the bulletin as the plans continue.
St. Mary's: If there are any students, grades 4 and up,
that are interested in becoming servers for Mass, please
contact Pat Salic at 507-236-2195. I will then set up
