LENTEN FAST & ABSTINENCE: All Catholics who have reached their fourteenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine inclusive are also bound to observe the law of fast on Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal & avoiding food between meals. Two other lighter meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day. STATIONS OF THE CROSS: Stations of the Cross will be held in the Church every Thursday at 2:00PM and every Friday at 7:30PM during Lent. OPERATION RICE BOWL: In Iraq, we encounter Majd and his family, people forced to flee violence, searching for stability. How are we called to welcome the stranger in our midst? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Rice Bowls are available on the tables in the vestibule. Visit crsrice-bowl.org for more info. Rice Bowls should be returned at Mass on the Fifth Sunday of Lent– March 18th. LENTEN SOUP SUPPER: Once again, we will be offering a Soup Supper during Lent. The date will be Thursday, March 22nd from 6:00PM to 9:00PM. Please call Mary (631-691-5881) if you would like to be involved. Thank you.

BREAD & WINE: If anyone is interested in hosting the Bread and Wine for a week in memory of a loved one, please contact the Rectory at 631-264-0124. The cost of bread and wine is $60. TAIZE PRAYER: Join us for Taize Prayer Around The Cross on Friday, February 23rd at 8:00PM in the Church, following Stations of the Cross. Prayer around the Cross is a way of expressing an invisible communion not only with Jesus, but with all who love Him and know what it is to suffer with Him and know the power of His resurrection. TESTIMONIAL DINNER: There will be a testimonial dinner on Saturday, March 3rd from 7:00PM to 11:00PM in honor of Past Grand Knight, SK Paul DiOrio. The event will take place at St. Killian’s Knights of Columbus in Farmingdale. The cost is $30 and includes beer, wine, soda, buffet dinner, cake and coffee. If you are interested, please call Henry Tomlinson at 631-789-0745. K of C BUS TRIP: The Knights of Columbus have organized a Bus Trip on Wednesday, March 7th to Yonkers Casino. There will be raffles, and a 50/50. The buses will leave from the Village Parking Lot at the Amityville Library at 9:00AM sharp! Bring along a friend. Price is $35 per person. The coin package will be determined. Make your reservations early. Call Henry Tomlinson at 631-789-0745 for seating.

Lent I – The Temptation in the Desert

Ash Wednesday is one of my favorite days in the Church’s calendar year. I still have ashes on my thumb. No matter where I went on Ash Wednesday people stopped and asked me, “Father, do you have any ashes on you?” At 7-11, at Stop and Shop, the bank, the gas station. Everyone wanted their ashes. One year I had a line in a Pizza Restaurant and then went to the cooks in the kitchen. I guess people think the priest carries extra ashes around in his back pocket. But it is a wonderful day when we all want to make changes and come closer to God.

We have just been marked with ashes to begin this Lenten journey. When God created the first man, Adam, He created him out of the very same dust and ash. God took ordinary dust and divinized it. God made ordinary dust holy! God breathed life into the dust and made Adam. And without God, we would be nothing but dust and ash. “Remember you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.”

On this First Sunday of Lent, we are given the story of Jesus’ flight into the desert where He is tempted by the Devil. In the longer version by St. Matthew we are given 3 temptations from the cross. The last thing Satan wants Jesus to do is to go to the cross. Why? Because Satan knows that the cross is his undoing. It is the Holy Cross that will destroy Satan. This is the method God will use to overthrow Satan. For this reason, Satan tries to tempt Jesus away from the cross in any way possible.

In St. Matthew’s version of the temptation, Jesus is tempted 3 times: Hunger, Spectacle and Power. Each of the 3 temptations is prefaced by a single word: “If.” “If you are the Son of God, command these stones become bread.” “If you are the Son of God, jump from the top of the temple.” “If you are the Son of God, bow down and worship me.” Satan is not sure who this is that is before Him. Finally, we are told that Satan departs, having failed to succeed in tempting Jesus from the cross. However, the gospel ends with a chilling statement: “Satan departs--for a while….” Satan will return one final time to tempt Jesus. But when?

Years later, we fast-forward to the cross where we find Jesus near death. In the crowd spread out before Him in the fog of dust and dirt, we hear a single voice cry out: “If you are the Son of God, come down from that cross.” With that single two-letter word “If,” in that instant, Jesus knew Satan was out there in that crowd. One last futile effort by the prince of lies to get Jesus off the cross.

It is said that Jesus did not save the world through His sermons, through His words, or even through His miracles, but only through His Cross. Christ was never more salvific, never more powerful, than when nailed to the cross. It is the cross, and only the cross that saves us. This is what Satan feared, and in which we hope.

- Fr. Gerard Gordon

STEWARDSHIP Our Way of Life

SOME STEWARDHSIP THOUGHTS: The waters of Baptism make us part of the new covenant in Christ. But the bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us that “there is a fundamental obligation arising from the sacrament of baptism…that people place their gifts, their resources – theirselves – at God’s service in and through the Church.” Our Lenten journey now begins with the invitation to rediscover our baptismal promises to reject sin and to profess our faith. We are called to conversion and renewal by turning away from sin, away from those things that cause us to live in a way that is less than God intends. Lent is a time when we follow Jesus ever more closely, not only tracking His life, but emu-lating it through a renewed focus on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These 40 days, take up your Lenten obligations in earnest, yet forgive yourself if you fall short of your expecta-tions. How are you challenged to go further in following Jesus this Lent? Do you accept God’s plan? Do you love God’s plan? LIVING STEWARDSHIP: We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish whose giv-ing – whether of alms, time, or service – will be an expression of gratitude for what the Fa-ther has given them. CELEBRATING OUR GIFTEDNESS: We celebrate the gifts of time, coordinating, and service shared with us by our CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL COMMITTEE. The Catholic Ministries Appeal raises money for the ministries of the Diocese and Catholic Charities and is a prin-cipal fundraiser for the parish. Please call Bill (631-598-2037) for more information or to help. PARISH FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP: 2/11/18 Collection: $15,842.50 2/13/17 Collection: $14,254.00

Thank you for sharing your gifts of treasure.

Loving Jesus, as we enter this season of Lent, inspire and enable us to use some of the blessing of our time reflecting on the great love You offer us. Amen.

EMPLOYMENT MINISTRY: At St. Martin’s Employment Program we maintain a database of personnel seeking employment in the local Long Island market. We assist them by providing counseling services including resume development and by making available a wide range of job search capabilities. Our extensive client database covers a wide range of employment experi-ence ranging from office work, sales help, factory work, food handling, home care, and companions to assist the elderly. If you can help, we can use volunteers on Mondays & Wednesdays, for just four hours per day, to assist people in finding suitable jobs. We need parishioners who can interview clients, prepare resumes, and perform job searches. If you wish to help please call Frank, Kathy, or Rosemary during regular office hours or leave a message. This ministry is staffed by volun-teer case workers. Phone: 631-598-2378; Fax: 631-598-2380 Email: [email protected] Office Hours: Monday & Wednesday, 10:00AM-2:00PM, in Outreach Office. CARING MINISTRY: The Caring Spirit Ministry will meet on Tuesday, February 20th at 1:30PM in the Genesis Room. Come meet Sister Marie from Outreach. Thank you!

SOCIAL MINISTRY

RESPECT LIFE: “There is no right more fundamental than the right to be born and reared with all the dignity the human person deserves. On this grave issue, public officials cannot hold themselves excused from their duties, especially if they claim to be Catholic. Every faithful Catholic must be not only ‘personally opposed’ to abortion, but also must like that opposition in his or her actions. In Robert Bolt’s plan A Man for All Seasons, St. Thomas More remarks, “I believe, when statesmen forsake their own private conscience for the sake of their public duties...they lead their country by a short route to chaos.” Sadly, too few follow the example of St. Thomas More. As voters, Catholics are under an obligation to avoid implicating themselves in abortion, which is one of the gravest of injustices. Certainly, there are other injustices, which must be addressed, but the unjust killing of the inno-cent is foremost among them.” (Archbishop Myers, archbishop of Newark). Please con-tinue to pray to end abortion.

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER ST. MARTIN OF TOURS SCHOOL WEEK OF FEBRUARY 12, 2018 www.smtschool.org 631.264.7166 “Believe & Become”

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, During Lent we are called to pray, fast and give arms. For some it is a season that is welcomed and for others it is viewed as a time of denial. Our children received ashes on Ash Wednesday as a reminder of God’s love, to turn towards God and away from sin. As we journey through this holy season, may we welcome the time to reflect on our faith, actions and how we can use this time to grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus. For many Lent is a season of fasting; with the question what should I give up? Perhaps we and our children may fast from the negative thoughts words or actions, fast from being quick to anger, and instead pray for others who we may not agree with or who may be in crisis, extend a hand in forgiveness, and give to those who are in need of friendship, community and kindness. This week, Bishop Barres met with all the principals from the Diocese of Rockville Centre. He spoke of dramatic missionary growth for the church grounded in conversions; to allow Lent to realign our hearts. During our Unity Day in the fall, I spoke with the children at the end of the day, after their classroom activities as we gathered together to connect our unity chains. I reminded them that each is a child of God, beloved and that God knows their name. As we journey through Lent, we should all remind ourselves of the same. In a world that is quick to post, text, email and speak quickly and sometimes harshly or without the feelings of the other person in mind, it is most important that we keep God’s love close to our heart, so that love can shine through us. I encourage families to spend time in pray and planning ways to show Jesus’ love to others. I encourage families to attend Mass weekly and participate in Lenten activities in their parish. During Lent, children will be praying the Stations of the Cross at their developmental level; however, children delight in sharing their faith traditions and/or rituals with their families. Chil-dren received a Lenten Prayer and Rice Bowl this week. Perhaps some families will include these items on their family table. May God Bless you! Mrs. Maria F. Martinez, Principal
