On July 8, 2012, the Most Reverend Bishop David Zubic stated “combined histories and combined efforts will shape the future of Saint Maria Goretti Roman Catholic Parish”.
That day, the challenge was put before three catholic parishes that were to become the Liberty Avenue, Friendship Avenue, and Penn Avenue Campuses. The elementary school, comparable to a precious heirloom in the Bloomfield Community, would continue making its contribution to catholic education under the direction and leadership of the revered Sr. Mary John Cook, long time Principal and faculty member. “Your child’s education will pay a huge factor in determining the person they will become in their adult life,” relates the dedicated Sister of the Holy Spirit.
Sr. John is passionate about preparing children for the life ahead of them as they learn the catholic faith and what it means to not only love

4th Annual Sciullo-Lombardozzi Golf Goes to the Dogs and Central Catholic Tuition Assistance Fund
Hundreds of friends and family members gathered for the fourth annual Paul J. Sciullo II - Nino Lombardozzi Golf Invitational on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at 3 Lakes Golf Course in Penn Hills. The fundraising event is held in memory of Bloomfield natives and Central Catholic graduates Paul Sciullo, one of three Pittsburgh police officers killed on April 4, 2009, and Nino Lombardozzi, of Lombardozzi’s Restaurant, who died unexpectedly in December 2008 with a new wife and baby on the way. Both men were only in their thirties.
As a continuing tribute to Paul and Nino, golf committee members earmarked $6,000 from the proceeds for a Central Catholic High School Tuition Assistance Fund established in their names, bringing the four year total to over $30,000, making it one of the leading endowments benefiting Central Catholic tuition assistance each year.
Another event highlight was a visit from City of Pittsburgh Police Officer Tony Yauch, K-9 partner of “Rizzo,” the police dog named for Officer Paul Sciullo and awarded to the Pittsburgh Police Department a year ago as a continuing legacy of Officer Sciullo on the police force, thanks to funding from last year’s golf invitational. Officer Yauch made remarks about the training of the dog over the last year, his success in the field and how proud he was to have Rizzo as his partner. The Sciullo family and golf committee members and Bloomfield residents Steve Bruno, Jr. and Rick DeCarlo, along with Lot 17 owner Dave Namestnik, attended the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Canine Training Academy K-9 Graduation, in a ceremony held at police headquarters on Friday, April 27, 2012.

Living Well with Arthritis
Y o u ’ v e probably heard t h e w o r d “arthritis” before and wondered if it could be affecting you. I have it, as well as my wife, my mother and most of my friends. By definition, arthritis means “joint inflammation” and it’s used to describe more than 100 different diseases and conditions that affect joints, the tissues that surround joints, and other connective tissues. Arthritis can affect people differently. It’s common in adults 65 and older, but it can affect people of all ages, races and ethnic groups. In fact, 1 out of every 5 adults in the United States – over 46 million people – has reported being diagnosed by their doctor with some form of arthritis.
There is a wealth of information in books, magazines and on the web about dealing with arthritis, but here are some basics. There are many prescription medications, but also a variety of over-the-counter medications and some nutritional supplements that can help. Just remember to check with your doctor or one of our pharmacists to be sure it is right for you and your medical history. Try and follow a healthy diet and getting a little physical activity daily. For every pound you lose, you remove about 4 pounds of stress from your joints. Try and increase those grains, fruits and vegetables, limit those desserts and take a little walk each day, around the block or even to our pharmacy to say hello. Rest and relaxation techniques can help reduce muscle tension and the stress that can accompany arthritis.
It’s natural to be upset and depressed about dealing with arthrit is, but those who l ive successfully with a chronic illness accept that their diagnosis is here to stay and quickly start thinking about how to adapt their lives. Think positive and enjoy the things you can do, the people around you, and don’t forget to say a little prayer for me.

Ursuline Academy All Class Reunion October 20, 2012A kick-off dinner will be held at Del’s Restaurant, 4428 Liberty
Avenue for classmates and former faculty on Friday, October 19th at 7:00 PM until midnight. On Saturday, October 20th from 1:30 to 5:00 PM the all-class gathering will take place at Ursuline Academy (now Waldorf School).
History: In 1863, Henry J. Lynch purchased seven acres of the Winebiddle Plantation from the heirs of John Conrad Winebiddle. The Second Empire style house Lynch built in 1867-68 changed hands several times and was passed to the Ursuline Order in 1893. It was used as a mother house until 1857 and as a boarding school with grades 1-12 over the years. The last graduating class was 1981.
In 1913, Carlton Strong, architect of Sacred Heart Church in East Liberty and the rectory of St. Paul Cathedral designed the Ursuline Chapel of the Sacred Heart. St. Angela Merici of Lombardy, Italy founded the order of nuns on November 25, 1535. It was called the Order of Ursuline Nuns for St. Ursula, a British princess who was a martyr of the church in the fourth and fifth centuries.
To relive a little bit of your history, please call Ellen McKnight at 502-515-7526 for information.

Bloomfield Street Hockey Tournament to Benefit the Watson Institute
The first Bloomfield Street Hockey tournament at Osceola Park on Labor Day Week-End was for the benefit of the Class of 8 at the Watson Institute in Sewickley, PA. Representing his class was Alexander (Alex) who is one of five children and the son of Frank and Renee Magliocco.
Adult players and kids competed with the spirit of “giving back”. Thanks to the coordinators, the generosity of the sponsors, and those who supported this tournament, it was a great hockey experience.
The Watson Institute will receive a check in the amount of $2,740.00 to be used for extra-curricular activities.
Saint Maria Goretti School is the recipient of $1,045.00 raised by the Parent-Teachers Guild through a concession stand at the tournament.
L to R: Anthony Colomarino, Max Sciullo, Rich Muto, Michael Colomarino. Anthony is SHCC Assistant Golf Pro and all of the men are from Bloomfield.
Thank You BluePolice Appreciation Day is an annual event at the South Hills Country Club that began in 2009 to honor Fallen Heroes Paul Sciullo, Eric Kelly, and Steven Mahyle. SHCC extends an invitation to Law Enforcement Officials for a day of golfing and hospitality. This is their way of saying “thank you” for allowing us to be safe in our homes and community.
