Mass Intentions From Fr. Flanagan

Dear St. Madeline Family, (From Today’s Message, May 6, 2020) Taco Tuesday is past and today is Wacky Wednesday for St. James Regional dress down day. Feel free to join the fun. It does seem like we need some lighter moments amidst all that is happening. One way is to travel the high road of charity in word and deed. The virtue of charity is kind, light-hearted and loving. Charity overcomes an abundance of sin and brings us into the light. Undoubtedly, there are many heroes among the front-line workers. Their courageous service is undeniable. Other heroes are the brave men, women and children who wear the cape of charity. Charity is the greatest of all the virtues. Today, let us also pray that charity will help us and the world to be more loving. Please contact me with any prayer requests, concerns or good news. Let us stand united in prayer and united as St. Madeline Church. God bless all.

Peace,

Fr. John Flanagan

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced that Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez has suspended all public Masses in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia effective at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18th and until further notice.

The Archbishop previously dispensed the faithful from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. Both decisions were made in response to the growing concern over the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the directives provided by government and health department officials at the local, state, and national levels. These measures will be re-evaluated pending future developments.

In making this announcement Archbishop Pérez said, “As the Archbishop of Philadelphia, my first priority is to ensure the health and welfare of those entrusted to the pastoral and temporal care of our Church. So, in light of the developing Coronavirus pandemic, a decision has been made to suspend the public celebration of all Masses in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for the time being.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has an online Spiritual Resources page that provides many excellent resources to nourish you spiritually and help you remain as close as possible to Jesus in the Eucharist during this time. Find a list of live-streamed Masses, online devotions, prayer services, faith formation, ways to help and more at the following site, http://archphila.org/resources/

Keep Cool Campaign Update: We need you to keep us cool! Thank you! Donations to the “Keep Cool Campaign” have now totaled over $128,962. The Goal is $220,000. We have received contributions ranging from $25 to a new high of $10,000! Thank you very much and God bless you! Fundraising options: *Keep Cool Campaign envelopes are available in Church. *Donations may be made through our website at Keep Cool Campaign. *Monthly and Annual Pledges are an option. *All proceeds from the Parish Cookbook and Christmas Ornaments. *Funeral Memorial donations may be applied to the Keep Cool Campaign. *A parish-wide letter will be mailed soliciting funds. Please consider making a donation for your Church and this project. We have not asked for funds for capital projects in recent history. Many people make charitable donations – please consider your parish and our campaign. There may be some parishioners who would consider a one-time or two-year significant donation. All help is greatly appreciated. If you cannot donate at this time, please consider it in the future. “For God loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work”. Thank you to everyone who has donated and to those who are considering in the future! May God bless you for your generosity and your love of our beautiful parish!

May 10 through May 16: The Vigil Candle on the Blessed Mother Altar has been lit in memory of Dominica Capriotti at the request of Ed Capriotti. Food Drive: St. Madeline’s held its biggest Food Drive ever last Saturday, May 2. The Community of Disciples (COD) sponsored it along with the Knights of Columbus.

We would like to thank everyone that helped make it so successful by donating food. The amount of food acquired in a two-hour window was just unbelievable. St. Madeline’s pantry will absorb most of the food and distribute it to people in need in our community. What we cannot use, will go to St. Katharine Drexel Food Pantry and Anna’s Place in Chester - both are also in need of food for their clients.

An additional big thank you goes out to the AOH (Ancient Order of Hibernians) who also sponsored a food drive for St. Madeline’s on Saturday.

Again, we thank you for your overwhelming generosity to help those less fortunate. God Bless You!! St. Madeline Chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul: In the Gospel today, Jesus says “…whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.”

• Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you think. The coins placed in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box bring Christ's love and compassion to the poor.

Reading I: Acts 6: 1-7 The widows of Greek-speaking Christian men (Hellenists) faced economic hardship and were being overlooked by the community. The Apostles were being swamped by requests and unable to answer them in a timely way. The Spirit directed them to commission seven men of proven virtue to do a “table ministry.” Hence the diaconate was born.

Reading II: I Peter 2: 4-9 St. Peter describes Christians as those becoming “God’s household” and sharing in the risen Lord’s very life. He also describes the people using four Old Testament categories. Their basic task, he wrote, was to “announce the praises” of Jesus.

The Gospel: John 14: 1-12 St. Thomas, with his habitual honesty, questions Jesus about “the way.” St. Phillip, in his bewilderment, asks to “see the Father.” Jesus’ astounding answer brings Phillip, and us too, the assurance that only faith does.
