STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” -Mk 1:17 Jesus’ call to ”Follow me” is a call to all Christians! Jesus asks us to help Him build his church on earth by gener-ously sharing all our gifts of prayer, talent and treasure. Remember, Jesus calls us to generously develop and share all our gifts, not just the ones we pick and choose.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JANUARY 25, 2015

America’s Catholic schools originally grew to support the right of Catholic parents to have their children educated in a way that

respected their religious beliefs and values at a time when public schools were actually run by Protestant Churches, some strongly opposed to Catholic life. This anti-Catholic attitude reached a legal peak of power in 1922 when Oregon passed the Compulsory Education Act, which compelled students from the ages of 8 to 16 to attend public schools. The measure was spearheaded by the Ku Klux Klan, joined by organizations such as the Scottish Rite Masons, the Knights of Pythias and the Loyal Orange Lodges. When the Sisters of the Holy Names and the Hill Military Academy sued to uphold the right of private schools to exist, the case went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which unanimously held for the private schools in the Pierce v. the Society of Sisters decision of 1925. Justice James C. Reynolds, writing for the Court, said that our basic liberties exclude any state dictate that would force children to be educated only by public schools. “The child is not the mere creature of the state,” he said, and “those who nurture him and direct his destiny have the right, coupled with the high duty, to recognize and prepare him for additional obligations.”

As we mark Catholic Schools Week, it would be good to recall something the great John Henry Cardinal Newman once said, which wisely describes the kind of person Catholic education seeks to form:

I want a laity … who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand, who know what they hold, and what they do not, who know their creed so well, that they can give an account of it, who know so much of history that they can defend it. I want an intelligent, well-instructed laity…. I wish you to enlarge your knowledge, to cultivate your reason, to get an insight into the relation of truth to truth, to learn to view things as they are, to understand how faith and reason stand to each other.

In their 2005 document Renewing Our Commitment, the United States Catholic Bishops said that Catholic schools offer the

fullest and best opportunity to realize the fourfold purpose of Christian education, namely to provide an atmosphere in which the Gospel message is proclaimed, community in Christ is experienced,

service to our sisters and brothers is the norm, and thanksgiving and worship of God is cultivated.

The people of this parish have long supported Saint Joseph School by their prayers, their enthusiastic pride and their tangible generosity. By continuing to do so, we will greatly benefit the Catholic life we prize so highly.

SAINT JOSEPH HELPING THE HOMELESS —JANUARY 31

The Interreligious Fellowship (IRF) was begun more than 30 years ago by a small group of people that included Saint Joseph’s own Fa-ther Frank Heinen. In 2011, the IRF joined

forces with Family Promise of Bergen County whose mission is to shepherd people through temporary peri-ods of homelessness and help them create an achieva-ble vision and foundation for self-sufficiency. For three weeks each year, St. Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge becomes "home" for some of these families with the support of Saint Joseph, Temple Avodat Shalom and the First Congregational Church of River Edge. On Saturday, January 31 we will be setting up our "Saint Joseph Room" for one of the families to sleep in each night during the week of February 1-7. As Barbara Gallagher (the head of this Ministry at St. Pe-ter's) says, “We will provide shelter, food, fun and lots of love to the parents and children.” Go to saintpeter.org to donate needed items. Scroll down and click on the “Family Shelter Ministry.” If you would like to offset the cost of the meals, please make a check payable to Saint Joseph (memo it “Family Shelter”) and drop it off at our rectory. If you would like more information or want to volunteer, please call Joan at 201-265-5823.

DONATE YOUR GENTLY-USED FIRST COMMUNION OUTIFTS

The Archdiocesan Office of Development and Stewardship is collecting gently-used Communion dresses,/veils, suits and shoes for our inner city parishes and for families in need. You can drop off your donation to our Parish Office/Rectory at 105 Harrison Street from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday until March 25. We will bring the dresses/suits to the Archdiocesan Center in Newark on Thursday, March 26.

SPECIAL MASS FOR “WORLD DAY FOR

CONSECRATED LIFE” —FEBRUARY 1

On February 1, the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the Archdiocese of Newark cordially invites all the faithful to the Mass for Consecrated Life on Sunday, February 1 at 12 noon in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Pope Francis has proclaimed this year as the “Year of Consecrated Life” and Archbishop Myers encourages all the faithful to gather in celebration and support of all who have consecrated their lives to God and to the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. We thank the consecrated men and women of our Archdiocese for their selfless gift of service to our local Church. In this Year of Consecrated Life, Pope Francis calls us to look to the past with gratitude, to live the present with passion, and to embrace the future with hope. For more information, please see the Year of Consecrated Life website at: newarkyearforconsecrated life.weebly.com

ARE YOU CELEBRATING YOUR 5TH, 25TH OR 50TH

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR? The Archdiocese of Newark is once again preparing the annual tradition of honoring those couples in our Archdiocese who will be celebrating five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2015. These anniversary liturgies will be celebrated by Archbishop John J. Myers in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark as follows:

April 19, 2015 at 3:00 pm (50 years) May 3, 2015 at 3:00 pm (25 years and 5 years)

It is the Church’s desire that every couple in the Archdiocese deserving of such recognition be present at the appropriate liturgy. The presence of a large number of couples will give favorable witness to the strength and stability of Christian marriage in today’s society. We extend our warmest congratulations to those who are celebrating one of these special anniversaries and hope you will be able to attend the liturgy. Please be sure to notify our parish secretary, Anne Annunziato, no later than April 1, so we can send your name to the Archdiocese.
