HAVE YOU LOST A LOVED ONE?

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP —STARTS SEPTEMBER 15

When grieving the loss of a loved one, individuals may feel overwhelmed and lonely. Adapting to life after the death of a loved one often takes more time than we expect. Recognizing that by virtue of our baptism into the Christian faith we are called by Jesus to minister to one another, our parish community of Saint Joseph will offer a Bereavement Support Group led by Sister Josefina Morales and Kurt Strobach for our brothers and sisters who have lost a loved one through death. (Parishioners from other churches are also welcome.) The purpose of the group is to provide opportunities for mutual healing in a confidential, educational and spiritual environment. The group will meet for 8 weeks on Fridays (7:00-9:00 pm) from September 15-November 3. If you would like to participate or if you need more information, please contact our parish secretary Gerry at 201-261-0148.

SUPPORT FOR SEPARATED AND DIVORCED CATHOLICS

STARTS SEPTEMBER 18 Our Healing Ministry for the Separated and Divorced will begin on Monday, September 18 at 7:30 pm in the Jackson Room (lower church—Harrison St. entrance). The twelve week DVD/discussion program, which requires pre-registration, is based on the teachings of the Catholic Church, and is open to anyone dealing with separation or divorce who would like to receive comfort, counsel, clarity, and most especially to feel God's peace and compassionate love. Annette Ziegler, our facilitator has a great deal of experience working with people. She has been a Catholic School teacher, served as a volunteer catechist and as Director of Religious Education in both the Archdioceses of Newark and New York. She has worked in Adult Faith Formation and in RENEW. She holds an M.A. in Religious Studies, certificates in Pastoral Theology, Spiritual Direction, Biblical Counseling, and the Intern Chaplaincy Program at Overlook Medical Center. Annette tell us, “I know what it is like to be separated and divorced and to have experienced the annulment process.” Annette wants to emphasize that all sharing within the support group is completely confidential. To register, email Annette Ziegler at [email protected] or call her at 201- 338-4841. Be sure to leave your name and phone #.

SAINT JOSEPH SCHOOL ANNUAL CARNIVAL

—SEPT. 15-16-17

50/50 RAFFLE & RIDE TICKETS ON SALE—THIS WEEKEND

Get discounted ride tickets and take a chance on our Carnival 50/50 Raffle —both tickets sold TODAY after all Masses. Help Saint Joseph School! Tickets—$10 each. Winning ticket will be drawn at our Carnival on September 17. You do not need to be present to win—but you won’t want to miss all the fun! Join us for a great time and a chance to help SJS.

Certain numbers are very significant in our Catholic religion, among them the number seven, which stands for a kind of fullness, just

as a full week is made up of seven days. And so the Book of Genesis describes God’s work of creation as spanning seven days, the first six of which the Lord devotes to producing the rich variety of his designs, while on the seventh day he rests—a consideration that explains our Sabbath worship. We also have seven sacraments (meant by Christ to extend his life in us), the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (specified in Is 11, 2), the seven virtues (the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity mentioned by St. Paul in 1 Cor 13, 13 and the four cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance), the works of mercy (seven spiritual and seven corporal), and Jesus’s seven last words spoken from the cross. And the list would not be complete without the seven sorrows (or dolors) of Our Lady, which are commemorated on September 15’s memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows.

The sorrows are traditionally enumerated as: 1. Simeon’s prophecy that a sword of sorrow would pierce Mary’s heart (Lk 2, 34-45). 2. The Holy Family’s flight into Egypt to escape the peril of King Herod’s murderous fear (Mt 2, 13-14) . 3. The loss of the twelve-year-old Jesus after the Temple festival (Lk 2, 43-45). 4. Mary’s encounter with Jesus as he carries his cross to Calvary (Lk 23, 26-27). 5. Mary’s vigil as her crucified son draws near to his death (Jn 19, 25-27). 6. Mary’s reception of the body of Jesus upon his death, unforgettably depicted in Michelangelo’s Pieta sculpture (Mt 27, 57-59). 7. The burial of Jesus in the tomb provided by Joseph of Arimathea (Jn 19, 40-42)

(continued above)

Growth in devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows was largely the work of the order of Servites, so named because they sought to serve the ways of Mary. This was a community of unusual origins, founded (c. 1225-1227) by seven wealthy young

men of Florence, three of whom were celibate and four married, including two who were widowers. After initially seeking to withdraw to a life of austerities and prayer, they eventually adopted a rule of life that drew upon the one established by St. Augustine, with certain borrowings from Dominican ways. Later, the community added an order of nuns and a “third order” of adherents who followed the main principles of Servite life while continuing in the lay state. As time went on, the Servites undertook significant charitable works and, especially after acquiring papal recognition, expanded to a number of countries as far away as India. The Seven Founders of the Servites were declared saints by Pope Leo XIII in 1888. Their feast day is Febraury 17.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel.” EZEKIEL 33:7 Many of us are generous with our gifts. However, how often is our generosity at the minimum level required? We do just enough or give just enough. Remember, the Lord calls us to be generous with all the gifts He has given us, to grow them and return them with increase.

PRAYER FOR GRANDPARENTS

Dear Lord Jesus, your mother who raised you

needed first to be raised in a family and grow to adulthood.

Your grandparents, Anne and Joachim, formed Mary to love

her heavenly Father, first and greatest above all things.

Grant that all grandparents will never forget the special role they have

in the lives of their children, and their children's children. Grant that all grandchildren

will always give the love and respect due to their elders.

Amen.
