PARISH CATECHISM CLASSES 2018 – 2019

Catechism classes are scheduled to begin in our parish with an ORIENTATION SESSION for parents/guardians and children at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, September 16th in the parish hall. Once again we will utilize the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies liturgically-based catechetical program that provides weekly handouts with a short description of the Sunday Gospel plus suggested activities and discussion starters for each age level. In keeping with the seasons and feasts of the liturgical year, children in class and with their families can have fun while learning about Jesus, his Church and the teachings of our faith.

Those who would like their children to take part in catechism classes are asked to submit a completed REGISTRATION FORM for each child as soon as possible so we may better assess the situation and be sure to have the adequate materials required. A catechism registration fee will help defray some of the costs of running our program. Nevertheless, this requested fee should in no way be considered a reason to refrain from enrolling children for whose parents the fee would impose an undue hardship.

As a rule, each Sunday children participating in our parish catechism program gather in the parish hall with their parents/guardians by 10:15 a.m. for some initial prayers and announcements. Then children break into their various catechetical groups and proceed with their catechists to their designated classrooms. Catechetical classes are divided into the following age groups: SEEDS (Preschool), PROMISE (Kindergarten – Grade 1), GOOD NEWS (Grades 2-3), VENTURE (GRADES 4-6) and VISIONS (Grades 7-8). Parents/guardians are asked to return to the parish hall by 11:15 a.m. to be ready to pick up their children.

We are in need of volunteers to serve as catechists and assistants for each designated catechetical group. If you are willing to help in any way, please advise Sharon Camier (our Pastoral Assistant) as soon as possible. Sharon plans to have a meeting with all catechists and catechetical volunteers on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 10:15 a.m. in Room 12.

HOW DO I BECOME CATHOLIC?

Many avenues lead individuals to the Catholic Church. The journey of faith can be a winding road. Whatever path has led you to this time of searching or interest in becoming a baptized Christian or, if already baptized, making a profession into the full communion of the Catholic Church, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process that could be Good News for you in your journey of faith. Our pastor, Father Robert, and our pastoral assistant, Sharon, are once again considering starting up this fall the RCIA process in our parish. Tentative plans include initial inquiry sessions to be held immediately following Mass on Wednesday evenings. To help us make preparations for the RCIA in our parish, please let us know if you might be interested in participating. Please speak with Father Robert and/or Sharon. We have a limited number of packs of leaflets of the series Understanding Christian Initiation which we can distribute to those discerning whether they would like to begin participation in the RCIA process.

PREPARATION FOR THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

On Sunday October 14th at 1:15 p.m. an ORIENTATION SESSION will be held for youth, their parents (and interested catholic adults not yet confirmed) who wish to prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in 2019 to be conferred when the Archbishop comes to our parish probably sometime in the spring. Please contact Sharon Camier or Fr. Robert to register and to find out what the preparation program will entail. We look forward to meeting our new confirmation candidates at our orientation session on October 14th. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE IN NEED OF HEALING AND COMFORT Max and Monique Armstrong, Darrell Aucoin, Bill Camier, Lynda Dodd, John Foucart, Rosario Jequinto, Joanna Mason, Deb McEnturff, Cynthia Patterson, Zonia Patson, Shirley Payment, James Polz and Helen Yankoski.

We continue to refresh and update our Parish Prayer List. Please contact our Pastoral Assistant, Sharon Camier, to help us update the list to include the names of those parishioners, relatives and friends currently in need of prayer. Please remember that to have names added to the list and printed in the bulletin and/or posted online we require permission from the person(s) concerned. Thank you for your help and for your prayers of intercession.

Sunday, August 19, 2018 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Proverbs 9.1-6 Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed.

Psalm 34.1-2, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Ephesians 5.15-20 Understand what the will of the Lord is.

John 6.51-58 My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Jesus said to the crowd, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life….” We can hardly blame the crowd

for their shock at this statement — eating the Flesh and drinking the Blood of our Lord should cause us a bit of a shock. Yet how easy it is to show up at Mass Sunday after Sunday, receiving the Eucharist as simply part of a weekly routine.

If we really spent time contemplating the gift our Lord is offering us in this sacrament, we would be awestruck at the love and power in this gift. Through it, our Lord is giving us the very best He has to give — Himself. Not even the greatest theological scholar or the holiest of saints can fully understand this mystery.

Thankfully we don’t need to be a saint or a scholar to receive this gift. But we should do our best to receive the Eucharist with gratitude. And we can look to today’s readings to glean two fundamental principles for becoming better Christian stewards.

The Eucharist is the foundation for a stewardship way of life. Through His gift of the Eucharist, God fills us with His love and strength. This love and strength empower us to live as generous stewards — to be faithful to the ministries we serve in, joyful in material giving, and offer our very best to our families and secular work.

The Eucharist is the ultimate inspiration for a stewardship way of life. When we contemplate this gift of God, we will want to make a joyful return to Him. Mass will become anything but routine and we will live each day as His passionate disciples.

Sunday, August 26, 2018 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Joshua 24.1-2a, 15-17, 18b We will serve the Lord, for he is our God.

Psalm 34.1-2, 15-16, 17-18, 19-20, 21-22 Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Ephesians 4.32 – 5.1-2, 21-32 This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the Church.

John 6.53, 60-69 Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.

STEWARDSHIP RELFECTION In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus continues His instruction on the Eucharist. Many of his own disciples cannot accept His

teachings and instead return to their former way of life, abandoning Christ altogether. Jesus turns to the Apostles and asks them to choose with the question, “Do you also want to leave?” Peter speaks up for the Twelve responding, “Master, to Whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

The demands of a stewardship way of life can be difficult. And the teachings of Christ can be hard to accept. How can we keep going when it gets tough? Peter’s honest answer to the choice Jesus poses shows us a way to stay true to a stewardship way of life.

Looking at himself and the world around him, Peter comes to a realization. To paraphrase, he says, “I don’t really see any better options, Lord. I’ve tried life with you and it’s hard. But I’ve tried life without You and it’s harder — it doesn’t satisfy.

Page 7: Saint John XXIII Roman Catholic Church...2018/08/26  · Saint John XXIII Roman Catholic Church 3390 Portage Avenue Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada R3K 0Z3 Telephone: 204-832-7175 • Fax:

7

Where else am I going to go? I choose You, Lord.” Peter knows he doesn’t have all the answers. And, so, he humbly chooses to rely on God. When the going gets tough, we can keep going by relying on God and trusting more deeply in Him.

Remembering blessings and relying on Him — these are two keys to a beautiful way of life.

Sunday, September 2, 2018 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Deuteronomy 4.1-2, 6-8 Elijah went in the strength of that food to the mountain of God.

Psalm 15.2-3a, 3b-4a, 4b-5 O Lord, who may abide in your tent?

James 1.17-18, 21-22, 27 Be doers of the word, not merely hearers.

Mark 7.1-8, 14-15, 21-23 You abandon the commandment of God and hold to the human tradition.

STEWARDSHIP RELFECTION In today’s Gospel from Mark, Jesus instructs us in the best way we can honor Him, teaching us the meaning of true

worship. Jesus reveals that the way we truly worship Him is by giving Him our hearts. We also learn in this Gospel passage what our Lord does not want — the pious lip service that the scribes and Pharisees offer.

But how can we determine if we really are giving our hearts over to the Lord and not just paying Him lip service? We must examine our lives to see if they reflect a life lived out for Him. Stewardship gives us a concrete means to examine our lives in three fundamental areas — the use of our time, our talents, and our material gifts.

A stewardship way of life invites and challenges us to make specific commitments in each of these areas on a regular basis, giving us a practical means to commit to the Lord. How well we are keeping these commitments can give us a kind of measuring stick to see if we are growing closer to Him, or perhaps need to put a little more effort into a particular area of our lives.

When we all strive to give God true worship — putting Him first with all our hearts — what beauty we will find in our homes, our parish, and our world.
