The Word of the Lord First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 This passage from Sirach details the duties children owe to father and mother. Their life-long devotion will not be forgotten and “will take lasting root.” Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21 Paul urges Christians particularly in the setting of the family, to “clothe” themselves with kindness, patience, humility, and mercy; to forgive; and, above all, to love! Gospel: Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 An angel of the Lord, appearing in a dream to Joseph, urges him to flee with Jesus and Mary to Egypt to escape the murderous schemes of Herod. Later, in another dream, an angel tells Joseph to go with Jesus and Mary to a town called Nazareth in the region of Galilee, thus fulfilling the Scriptures: “He shall be called a Nazarean.”

Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. Each of our readings today invites us to reflect on the family and family life. Our first reading from the Book of Sirach focuses on the relationship between a child and his/her mother and father. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves himself from them. When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother. The fourth commandment tells us to “honor your father and mother”. Traditionally we think of this as respect for parents, not only as a child, but into adult life – where sometimes we are called to become the care provider for our parents. In this passage from the Book of Sirach, we see that we have a sacred responsibility for the care of our parents. We call our parish a community of believers in Jesus Christ. We live in a neighborhood or a community. Our workplace or school is a community as well. Our family is a community of relatives and those who are not “blood related” to us, whom we consider family. How are we to live within these various communities? St. Paul in today’s passage from the Letter to the Colossians tells us to be compassionate, kind, humble, gentle, patient and forgiving. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Jesus, in fully taking upon our human condition in all things except sin, was born into a family. Mary and Joseph provide us with models of faith and trust in God, especially in the struggles and challenges that we face

internal and external to our family. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us! A blessed new year to all! Deacon Mike

Fresh off of celebrating the most wonderful day of the year, Christmas Day, we at St. John the Apostle School take a moment to reflect on the first half of our school year. We enjoyed a terrific start to our year and have sustained it throughout November and December. Our preparation for Christmas meant a very busy month indeed. So we take this opportunity to share with you all of the great things that are happening at our school.

CELEBRATING THE SEASON: One of our most joyous nights of the entire year is the night of our Christmas Concert! This year’s concert was held on December 12th, and what a celebration of our Catholic faith it was. Students in grades K through 5, as well as our Schola Cantorum sang religious Christmas songs. It was a sight to behold, and this festive expression of our faith made you proud to be a part of St. John the Apostle. Special thanks to Mr. Mayon for preparing our carolers. They did an amazing job!

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: Our annual Christmas Bazaar was held on Friday, December 13th. The bazaar had lots of new features including a bouncy globe that was well received by our students. Of course, many of the time tested staples remained, and students reveled in playing pop a shot and other fun games. The biggest highlight of all, however, was getting their picture taken with Santa Claus. We thank Old St. Nick for stopping by and spending the day with us. Special thanks to Kim Italiano, Michelle Scaturro, Denise Laskody and all of our parent volunteers for making this day a memorable one for our students.

EMBRACING OURFAITH: All Advent long our students have been participating in the weekly lighting of the Advent Wreath. Each Monday our students have done this as part of their community outreach. Service to the community is an essential component of a St. John’s education. On December 14th our 2nd graders received the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Congratulations to all of our grade two students for attaining this religious milestone.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH: St. John the Apostle students are always more than willing to help those less fortunate than them. In recent weeks, we have held multiple tag days to assist those in need. Those efforts proved fruitful. We were able to raise $500.00 for people in the hurricane ravaged Bahamas and $600.00 for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Throughout the year, our students have partnered with students from Caldwell University to raise money for pediatric cancer research as well as gather much needed supplies for the homeless population in New York City. These selfless acts of kindness truly embody what our school community is all about. We thank you for your blessed efforts!

A LOOK AHEAD: January is right around the corner, and it promises to be a busy month at our school. We will have open houses for prospective new families on January 16th (7-8 p.m.), January 17 (9-10a.m.). Check our website for more open house dates after the New Year. The hectic month will draw to a close with the celebration of Catholic Schools Week from January 26th through the 30th. As has been our tradition we will kick off Catholic Schools Week by celebrating Mass at 9 a.m. on Sunday, January 26th.

On behalf of the entire faculty and staff at St. John’s I would like to wish you all a belated Merry Christmas. Let me also take this opportunity to wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year. Although Christmas Day has come and gone, we are still very much in the midst of the Christmas Season. We thank all of our parishioners for your continued support of our school. May your 2020 be filled with joy!

May God Bless You,

Dr. Egan
