The Word of the Lord

First Reading: Isaiah 50:5-9a Isaiah describes the willingness of the Suffering Servant to submit to the persecution of his enemies. This willingness stems from true faith in God, and the knowledge that the Lord will always be his help.

Second Reading: James 2:14-18 James states that if some one is hungry and you wish them well but do not help them, you have done them no good. He compares this to stating your faith, without backing it up with your actions. He reminds us that we must show our faith through our good works.

Gospel: Mark 8:27-35 Jesus taught his disciples that as the Messiah, he had to suffer much, be put to death, and rise three days later. Peter began to disagree and Jesus reprimanded him for judging by human standards rather than by God’s. He told them that whoever would be willing to lose their life for the sake of Jesus and the gospel, will in fact preserve their life forever.

St. John’s Family Page

Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Christ.”

Today we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. The theme for this year is “Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ”. Some in our community have been called to serve as catechists in the parish CCD program, RCIA, hall monitors, classroom aides or Catholic school teachers. Catechists will be formally commissioned during the Noon Mass and receive a special blessing. Each person, by virtue of Baptism is responsible for handing on the faith and witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thus, Catechetical Sunday is not only about those who teach in the classroom, but for every Baptized Catholic. Parents have an essential God-given role as the primary educators of their children in the Catholic faith. The Religious Education Program exists at St. John’s helps parents to find the resources to educate their children in what it means to be Catholic and in fostering in their children a love and relationship with Christ and His Church. Every Catholic should be sharing their faith. Some respond in the ways just described. All of us have opportunities to share our faith. Sometimes it may be through inviting someone to RCIA who has not received Holy Eucharist or Confirmation or inviting someone to Confession and Mass who has drifted away from the church – perhaps someone even in our own family. St. James in today’s second reading tells us that our faith must be alive. If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but do

not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? Then we give evidence that our faith is linked to charity. Jesus tells his disciples: Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. We put the faith we profess, that parents and others have taught us into practice. We share with others our “encounter” with Jesus Christ. Why is this important? When we stand before Jesus at the end of life – the question will be: Did we share the love of Jesus Christ in our hearts with others, both corporally and spiritually? May God bless us always! Deacon Mike
