FOR EMERGENCIES CALL:225-267-7210

Fr Matthew on Retreat There are certain passages in the Gospels that I gravitate towards. One is a verse that if you read it, you wouldn’t guess it was that significant. In Mark 6, Jesus sends his apostles on a missionary journey. They return reporting all they had done and taught, and Jesus responds, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” (vs. 31) Jesus and the apostles are making their way to a secluded place when the crowds discover their intentions and head them off: “People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.” (Mark 6:33)

The verse that attracts me is “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” This is a “retreat verse.” Jesus calls his apostles to get away from all the distractions and spend quiet time with Him. That’s the definition of a retreat.

As you may remember, every October the priests of the Diocese of Baton Rouge go across the river for a retreat at Manresa for a few days. Starting tomorrow, however, I’m taking a personal retreat in the desert north of Phoenix, Arizona from May 14 to May 22.

Why am I going on retreat when we go every October? One thing you learn when you make a regular retreat is that not all retreats are created equal. There are silent retreats, retreats where there’s more socializing, team-building retreats, and so on. The October retreat with the Diocese is more of a time to socialize with brother priests than to go deep into prayer. I really enjoy the experience, but it’s not the same as 8 days of silence with the Lord.

The format of the 8-day silent retreat will be intense. I probably will be expected to pray 5 holy hours each day. I will meet the retreat master one-on-one for an hour each day. The only times I will talk are the responses at Mass and when I meet the retreat master. I will be in the desert where there is no cloud cover to guard against the sun’s unrelenting rays.

While it may look like I’m escaping from parish duties to be utterly unproductive, this retreat is for the benefit of my parishioners. Here’s a summary from the retreat center website: “As priests receive a deeper taste of the Father’s merciful love for them, and are more deeply united to the Heart of Jesus, they are then made ready to share this divine love and mercy with all those entrusted to their care. In the words of St. John Vianney, ‘the priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus.’” I want to love more. I am going on this retreat to receive His love so that I may embody His love more and more. Your prayers for safe travels are greatly appreciated!

Peace,Fr. Matthew
