Flame of Faith Saint John Paul II Eucharistic Adoration Chapel Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in the Saint John Paul II Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. Intentions listed below are remembered for ONE WEEK [Sunday to Sunday]. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intentions remembered and prayed for are available in the lobby of the Adoration Chapel. Dear Parish Family, This weekend we are holding the Underwriting Reception for the 2018 Heritage Ball, being held on Friday, November 16th at the Drake Hotel in Oak Brook. I’m hoping many of our parishioners and supporters will join us for the event. The underwriting effort has begun! Mrs. Michele Pavalon and Mrs. Natalie Ryan have graciously agreed to chair the event. They will host a reception in the Fireplace Room after the 4:30 pm Mass on Saturday, and the 7:30, 9:00, and 10:30 am Masses on Sunday morning. Our hope is to make it more convenient for past sponsors of the event to make their underwriting gift, and to encourage NEW givers to the underwriting effort. Please stop today after Mass and make your underwriting gift to support this year’s Ball. The proceeds of the Heritage Ball go to the operating budget of the entire parish, and we are dependent upon a successful event. If you’ve given a gift in the past to underwrite the event, please consider giving again this year. Thank you for your past generosity and support. If you haven’t, consider becoming an important part of this major fund raising effort for our parish. The ladies chairing the event will be on hand to welcome you and your family, and receive your underwriting gift for the 2018 Heritage Ball. Within the last few weeks I have prepared and am sending to all registered parishioners an update regarding our efforts to raise funds for our Heritage Fund to repair the tower of our church, replace the deteriorating church doors, repair the broken sidewalks surrounding our buildings, and replace the obsolete and failed mechanical support systems (HVAC, back-up generators, and sump pumps that keep our buildings safe and dry). The $1,186,875 [almost $1.2 million] we need is certainly a large sum of money. In truth we need some major gifts to help us reach our goal... A generous parishioner gave us $250,000 toward reaching our goal. Memorial opportunities are available for each of the church doors. Please contact me if you are interested in sponsoring a memorial. Those donating to the project at the levels listed below will be included in the permanent bronze Memorial Book recently mounted to the Narthex wall in our church. In the Memorial Book, church door memorials and individual gifts will be acknowledged at the following levels: • Steeple Toppers [Gifts of $100,000 or more] • Tower Benefactors [Gifts of $25,000 to $99,000] • Tower Patrons [Gifts of $10,000 to $24,999] • Tower Sponsors [Gifts of $1,000 to $9,999] As of September 25, we have collected $589,463 from 115 givers. It's beautiful what a little more than 100 generous and conscientious parishioners were able to

contribute. That means we have received contributions from 4% of our registered parishioners to care for and repair the House of God. Interestingly, of our 2560 registered households, only 1,406 [55%] of those registered give to the parish in any way. Imagine what could be done if everyone did their part! We'd have no trouble meeting and exceeding our goal. And, I wouldn't have to ask for money at all. Something I know is a difficulty for some. It's important for us to care for the heritage past generations of Catholics have left us. The projects listed in the mailing I sent to your home are necessary, and will not only take a substantial amount of money to complete, but will also be an investment in our future, our continued contribution to the Heritage of Faith that IS Saint Isaac Jogues Parish. I want to thank all those who continue to generously support Saint Isaac Jogues Parish. Your gifts to the Heritage of Faith Fund, to repair our church, are above and beyond our usual Sunday giving which must remain strong to meet our expenses. This fiscal year, we need to see a Sunday offering of at least $38,000 per week to stay on track with our usual operating expenses. Your gifts enable us to maintain and improve our programs and outreach to those we serve, to build up the Catholic Faith in the Hinsdale area. Unfortunately, we have missed the window to schedule the work and have it done before winter. Should we receive the necessary funding by the holidays, I’ll be able to have the work scheduled for completion in the early Spring – once Winter is passed. But, we are looking at an unknown amount of snow, and an unknown cycle of freezing and thawing during the winter months. Water will continue to infiltrate and do damage to the tower and structure of the church. And, the concrete around the parish campus will continue to deteriorate. The church doors are in bad shape and will take a beating this Winter. The hardware is failing. It was “construction grade” and the company that installed it is out of business. We need to replace it as well to keep the church safe and secure. I can’t see spending thousands of dollars on hardware for doors that are also falling apart. We need to get the work on church and facilities scheduled and completed. And before that we need the funding. We are blessed with an active parish, a great school, a strong religious education program, a beautiful parish campus— filled with substantial, solid, and beautiful buildings. But, with such blessings comes the responsibility to maintain and pass on to future generations of Catholics what has been given us. Thank you. May God bless you abundantly for your support, generosity, and faith ...

God’s Blessings! Father De Salvo

Saint Michael the Archangel “Defend us in Battle!” October is the month of the Holy Angels

O n Oct. 1, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a deeply disturbing mystical

experience at Mass. He had just finished celebrating in his private chapel when he suddenly stood transfixed in front of the altar. For perhaps 10 minutes he stood there as if in a trance, his face drained of color. Then he went to his office and

composed a prayer to St. Michael. He told his staff the prayer should be offered throughout the Church. He explained that he had heard two voices in the vicinity of the tabernacle. He believed they were the voices of Our Lord and of Satan. Pope Leo heard Satan boast that he could destroy the Church in 75 or 100 years, if given the opportunity. Then he heard Our Lord give Satan permission to try. (This sounds somewhat similar to what we read in Job 1). The prayer which Pope Leo XIII composed was 10 times the length of the version we use today. The Pope ordered that the prayer must be recited after every low mass. However, use of the prayer (as a required part of the mass) was discontinued in 1964. Thirty years later, in his Regina Coeli address, Pope Saint John Paul II revived use of the prayer. He said, Although the prayer is no longer required by liturgical law to be recited at the end of Mass, I ask every one not to forget it and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and against the spirit of the world. He directed that the prayer could be inserted after the Mass, as the priest leaves the altar. This practice is observed in Saint Isaac Church. The pope clearly intended that we should offer this prayer in our homes as well. Pray the prayer frequently when temptation presents itself, when anxiety builds in your life, and when you need to call to mind God’s providential care for you and those you love. The prayer is as follows...

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness

and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him,

we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts,

by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits,

who wander throughout the world  seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

The Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel is a beautiful prayer to have on hand when feeling anxious or overwhelmed. Pray the prayer often, and ask Saint Michael’s intercession to protect you for the “wickedness and snares” of Satan, who looks for opportunities to lure us away from the Lord. His power of intercession is great. Ask him for solace, for calm, for surety of faith, and for the wisdom and grace to recognize temptation in your life, to unmask it, and resist it in all its forms.

October 2nd The Feast of the Guardian Angels On September 29th we celebrate the Feast of the Archangels ~ Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael. Reminders of God’s continual guidance, His communication with His people, and His protection. But, on October 2nd, we celebrate the care the Lord has for each and everyone of us, in our Guardian Angels. Perhaps no aspect of Catholic piety is as comforting to us as the belief that an angel protects us from dangers real and imagined. However, Guardian angels are not just for children. Their role is to represent individuals before God, to watch over them always, to aid their prayer and to present their souls to God at death. The concept of an angel assigned to guide and nurture each human being is a development of Catholic doctrine and piety based on Scripture but not directly drawn from it. Jesus' words in Matthew 18:10 best support the belief: See that you do not despise one of

these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. Devotion to the angels began to develop with the birth of the monastic tradition. Saint Benedict gave it impetus and in the twelfth-century, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux gave devotion to the angels is present form.

Whatever the history, the Guardian Angels are yet another sign of God’s love and care for each and every one of us. His love is a deep, personal love that knows no limits. Let us “approach the throne of grace” confident in His love and mercy. Pray often to your guardian angel!

The Archangels Pope Francis I The Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are our traveling companions and have an important role in the journey of Christians towards salvation. The Lord sends them to accompany us on the way of life. The Archangel Michael is the one who “fights the devil.” He fights the “great dragon,” the “ancient snake,” who seduces the whole inhabited earth. The Great Michael”, commissioned by God, fights and defeats the devil. It helps us on our way to Heaven to make war, not to be seduced. Archangel Gabriel is the one who “brings good news.” He has indeed brought the announcement of salvation to Mary, to Zachariah, to Joseph, and to help Christians never forget the Good News, that Jesus came to be with us, to save us. Archangel Raphael “walks with us.” Let us ask his intercession to offer protection from the “seduction of making the wrong step.” The archangels show us care, compassion, and protection of God at work in our lives. Let us go to them for help!

Saint Peregrine Devotions Tuesday evening at 7pm Monthly Devotions in Honor of Saint Peregrine Patron of those who suffer from Cancer or any incurable disease or condition

Tuesday is the FIRST TUESDAY of the month, and we will hold our monthly devotions in honor of Saint Peregrine, the patron saint of those who suffer from cancer or any incurable disease or condition, at 7pm in the church. Cancer and chronic sickness and pains touches every family. Many are suffering, and we all need prayers and encouragement from one another. When we are linked by the power of prayer, we, as it were hold each other’s hand as we walk side by side along a slippery path; and thus by the bounteous disposition of charity, it comes about that the harder each one leans on the other, the more firmly we are riveted together in true Christian love... [Saint Gregory the Great] The early facts about Saint Peregrine are few and uncertain. He was born in Italy around 1265. He and his family were part of the anti-Papal forces seeking to usurp the temporal power of the Pope in the Papal States. When Saint Phillip Benizi was sent by the Pope to preach reform, Peregrine, then a young man was part of the protest against him, and even struck the Saint. The moment of striking Saint Phillip seemed to drastically change Peregrine. This enemy of the Church had a dramatic change of heart. He began to channel his energies into good works and eventually he joined the Servants of Mary, and pronounced his vows as a Servite at the age of 30. He never was ordained a priest, never thinking himself worthy of such a great honor. But, he nonetheless dedicated his life to the sick, the poor, and the fringe people of society. He also imposed a special penance on himself- to stand whenever it was not necessary to sit. This led to varicose veins. The varicose veins deteriorated into an open, running sore on his leg. The sore was later diagnosed as cancer. The wound became so obvious, odorous and painful that the local surgeon scheduled surgery to amputate the leg. Suddenly, Peregrine was confronted with the ugliness and suffering of his own life. The night before the operation he prayed before the crucifix in the Priory Chapter Room. His prayer led him to a deep trance-like sleep, during which he envisioned the crucified Christ leaving the cross and touching his cancerous leg. When Peregrine awoke, he discovered the wound healed and the leg saved. He lived for twenty more years, and died on May 1st, 1345 at the age of 80. Canonized a Saint on December 27th, 1726, and his Feast is celebrated annually on May 4th. The power of his intercession is known to be great. Join us Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. for the devotions in honor of Saint Peregrine. The blessing with the relic of Saint Peregrine will be given, and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will also be a part of the evening service. If you, or someone you know, suffers from cancer, or any other incurable disease or chronic condition, join us for prayer and ask for healing, an increase in faith, acceptance of God’s will, and strength to bear whatever God asks of you.

NEXT Sunday ~ October 7th at 2:00 pm The Blessing of Animals / In honor of St. Francis Thursday, October 4th is the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. The traditional Blessing of Pets, given in honor of the Feast of Saint Francis is a reminder of the many ways God shows His love for us. It also is a beautiful reminder of the admonition found in the Book of Genesis... “Let them have dominion over... all the earth, and over every-thing that creeps upon the earth....have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” [Genesis 1:26,28]. In His goodness, God gives us everything we need to see His love at work, to respond to His love for us, and to find Him, not only in this life, but in the eternal life of heaven. The Traditional Blessing of the Pets will take place NEXT Sun-day, October 7th at 2:00 pm, outside the main entrance of the Church. Bring your pets [contained or on a leash] to receive this special blessing from the Lord, through His Church.

Have you been approached  by someone seeking assistance?... It has come to our attention that there have been persons seeking financial assistance on or near our church property during our Sunday masses, and in the adoration chapel. Through our Mercy Fund, the parish is willing to do what we can to assist persons who find themselves in need. Each year Saint Isaac Jogues Parish provides more than $50,000 in charitable assistance to those in need. Your generous and consistent contributions makes this help, in the name of the Church, possible. Law enforcement and insurance/liability personnel have reminded us that it is best NOT to give individuals such assistance on your own. Instead, encourage them to contact the Rectory Office, and Deacon Bill Dunn — The Director of Evangelization and Outreach. Through his office, he will do what the parish can to assist them in their need. For your safety and the safety and security of others, and of our buildings, we have been told that this is the best way to proceed, and still offer assistance to those in need. Thanks for your cooperation.

FEASTIVAL 2018

Saturday, October 13 — 5:30-10:00pm Rain or Shine —Inside or Outside

This year's Feastival of St. Isaac Jogues will be held on Saturday October 13th, from 5:30-10:00 pm. This is the biggest, funkiest, most anticipated party of the year, where about a thousand people descend on the SIJ Parking lot (or inside depending on the weather) for great food, beer, wine, live music, sports, games, prizes, inflatables, a petting zoo, and good old, much-needed, community. If you've

never been, it's like a giant Block Party/Tailgate/Octoberfest all rolled up in a cool Catholic package. There's something for everyone at this unique, inexpensive event, where the adults gather and the kids roam free - just like God intended.

As this is our huge parish party, we can sure use some help pulling it all together. To volunteer or for more information go to the parish website (sij.net) and click the Feastival logo.

Come and hang out under the stars with family & friends at this casual, one of a kind, not-to-be missed parking lot party in honor of our Patron Saint.

Boys and girls in 4th through 8th grades who would like to be trained to be an altar server for weekend and weekday Masses, please join us. Training will be during the school day on Monday, October 1 at 8:30 AM in the church. We will have another training day on Wednesday, October 10 at 4:15 PM in the church. You are welcome to attend one or both of the training sessions. Parents will be asked to be present for a brief period with their child. Altar Servers are deeply engaged in the Liturgies of the Parish, assisting the Presider in the celebration of Mass. The primary role of the altar server is to assist Father in the celebration of the Liturgy. This is done by helping the priest and very attentively participating in and assisting with the Mass, serving with reverence and respect. For more information or to register to attend,

Sunday Night Mass Choir Forming! Our Assistant Organist, Larry Lalonde, is welcoming new members to join the 6pm Sunday night choir here at St. Isaacs. If you want to deepen your faith, be an instrument for the love of Jesus, pray, sing and minister at the sacred liturgy… this choir is for you. The choir, as part of the over-all liturgical music program at Saint Isaac’s will do a blending of both traditional and contemporary Catholic liturgical music. Through our liturgical music, whatever the style, we want to be very prayerful addition to the liturgy... not a detraction or a performance. After all... to sing is to pray twice! So if you have a fire burning in your heart for God, and want to sing his praise on Sunday evening, join us! For more information, call Larry at 630-788-7425.

Our rehearsals will be before the Sunday evening mass at 5pm.
