Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida
Listening is not always hearing. Hearing is not always a
result of ‘intentional’ listening. It can be difficult to
quietly, intentionally listen with a true focus on what is
being said.
How many times do you listen as someone begins
talking and soon find yourself drifting away, off into
your own world of thoughts? A word, a phrase, a short
story, can trigger thought responses about concerns in
life that must be addressed. Words and stories can recall
pleasant memories of times past. They can also send us
into a state of daydreaming. In any of these situations,
we have ceased listening and are disconnected from the
one speaking.
Listening to and truly hearing the other person is an art.
Intently, or perhaps, intentionally, focusing on one
speaking is a very essential part of listening and thus
hearing. When we find our thoughts drifting, we must
quickly pull them back to the moment.
Individuals, perhaps ourselves, are often misquoted or
misunderstood because someone lost focus, checked out,
and what was being said was not accurately heard. It
was misinterpreted. We can also even hear and interpret
what is said differently than the person next to us.
There are times, while listening to someone during
conversation, we find ourselves mentally constructing
our response when we haven’t even heard, in their
entirety, the comments or statements of the other person
speaking. We are not mindfully present.
So, what is the answer? How can I be a better listener?
How can I truly hear? If I do not listen to and hear
someone speaking to me, how will I ever hear God?
How will I know His voice? God may speak to me in
silence. His voice may simply be in the air I breathe.
“. . God sings, and I sing back.
The singing, I mean, can be as jubilant as the red of
God-made tomatoes, as the soaring of a kite or the
splashing of children in a pool. The singing is my heart’s
joyous response. But God’s singing can also be as heavy
as the fragrance of lilies in a funeral home, heavy as the
news of a friend’s grief. God’s singing can be as light as
harpsichord music or a spring outing, as sad as the
howling of a night train or the evening news. It can be
cheerful, enchanting, challenging, amusing. In
everything we experience we can hear God singing, if we
listen attentively.” 1

Escuchar no es siempre oír. La audición no siempre es el
resultado de una escucha "intencional". Puede ser difícil
escuchar en silencio, intencionalmente, con un enfoque
verdadero en lo que se dice.
¿Cuántas veces escuchas cuando alguien comienza a
hablar y pronto te encuentras distraído, hacia tu propio
No estamos presentes conscientemente.
¿Entonces, cuál es la respuesta? ¿Cómo puedo ser un mejor
oyente? ¿Cómo puedo realmente escuchar? Si no escucho y
". . Dios canta, y yo vuelvo a cantar.
The 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Active and contemplative. At work and at rest. These are
dynamics we all face in our lives, and if we're honest, we
might not always balance perfectly! In this Sunday's
Gospel, our daily tensions play out in two sisters. Mary
"sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak."
Martha, on the other hand, is "burdened with much
serving." This, as it turns out, is not necessarily "the better
part."
All of us reading this have some sort of labor we engage in.
We have different trades or careers. We have responsibilities
as family members, some of which may take up most of our
time. In the time of Scripture, showing hospitality to guests
was one of the most important values in society. Our work is
important. Jesus himself spent decades as a carpenter. So
what's the problem with Martha? Martha is burdened,
anxious, and worried. Not only that, but she resents her
sister's choice. "Tell her to help me," she demands of Jesus.
How easy it is to get very busy doing good things. We
need to provide for our families and plan for retirement.
We need to make sure children are clothed, fed, and
educated. Our committees, ministries, and sports
schedules need to stay on track. However, without a
balance of work with rest, without contemplation in the
midst of our action, we will miss the point. While many
parts are required for our life in the world to function, the
better part is our relationship with God. This week, make
time in your busy schedule to sit at Jesus' feet. Maybe this
is 20 minutes with Scripture, participating in a daily
Mass, or a quiet walk alone in the park. Receive what
Christ wants to speak to you.
(Lucas 10:40).
(Lucas 10:42). ¿Cómo es
mi encuentro con Cristo Jesús mi amigo?

SEASONAL REFLECTION
Mary Magdalene has been the subject of speculation and scholarship over the last 2,000 years.
Mary Magdalene makes her first named appearance in Luke 8:2. She is one of several women
following Jesus. Luke specifically mentions that Mary had previously been delivered from
demonic possession. Whatever her life looked like before she met Jesus, it wasn't good! Because
of this association with being a repentant sinner, Mary Magdalene has been associated with other
similar stories in the Gospel, such as the woman caught in adultery or the woman who bathes Jesus'
feet with her tears.
Mary Magdalene shows up again by name at the end of the Gospels, when she stands with the
Blessed Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross. Mary is also present in the garden of the resurrection.
She is one of the women who goes to bring spices to Jesus' tomb, where they find the stone rolled
away. Mary stays in the garden weeping, believing his body has been stolen. Jesus approaches her
and calls her by name, and she becomes the first witness to the resurrection! While many of the
details of Mary Magdalene's life have been lost to time, she is an example of powerful conversion,
deep faith, and intimate love for Christ.
