EL LLAMADO DE DIOS
En las lecturas de hoy podemos oír tres ocasiones en
que algunas personas reciben y responden a un
llamado de Dios. Estos relatos siguen el patrón de la
mayoría de los relatos de llamados: una presencia
divina aparece y habla; la persona expresa temor o
no ser digna, recibe aliento, y finalmente responde al
llamado de Dios. La primer lectura de hoy muestra a
un indigno Isaías respondiendo al llamado de Dios:
“Aquí estoy, Señor, envíame” (Isaías 6:8). En la
segunda lectura Pablo nos dice que, aunque había
perseguido a la Iglesia, fue llamado a
ser apóstol. En el Evangelio, a pesar
de la protesta de Simón Pedro de que
es pecador, Jesús llama a Santiago, a
Juan y a Simón para que lo sigan.
Dejan todo lo que poseen y siguen a
Jesús —es decir, se convierten en
discípulos de Jesús. Estas lecturas
bíblicas desafían a evaluar nuestras
vidas. ¿Cómo sentimos en nuestras
vidas el llamado de Jesús a ser
discípulos? ¿Estamos respondiendo
bien y con fidelidad?

GOD’S CALL
In today’s scriptures we hear three instances of
people receiving and responding to a call from God.
These accounts follow the pattern of most scriptural
call narratives: a divine presence appears and
speaks; the person expresses fear or unworthiness,
receives encouragement, and finally responds to
God’s call. Today’s first reading shows an
unworthy Isaiah responding to the Lord’s call,
“Here I am; send me!” (Isaiah 6:8). In the second
reading Paul tells us that, even though he had
persecuted the church, he was called
to be an apostle. In the Gospel,
despite Simon Peter’s protest that he
is a sinner, Jesus calls James, John,
and Simon to follow him. They
leave everything they have and
follow Jesus—that is, they become
Jesus’ disciples. These scriptures
can challenge us to take stock of our
lives. How do we experience Jesus’
call to discipleship in our lives?
How well and faithfully are we
responding?

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote
With the theme “Open Wide the Doors of Faith,” our Reno Annual Bishop’s Appeal has begun. This
diocesan wide fundraising endeavor of our 29 parishes of this diocese helps support the many outreach
ministries and social services in Northern Nevada. The ever growing numbers of those faced with challenges
to provide basic necessities is overwhelming.
Our parish assessment this year is $76,263.00. This figure is determined by a rather interesting formula:
the ordinary income from our collections for the past three years is divided by the ordinary income of all 29
parishes of the diocese for the past 3 years, which determines the percentage of each parish goal.
I want to thank George and Carol Del Carlo for accepting the invitation to serve as our co-chairs for our
CSA (Catholic Service Appeal) this year. Last week they mailed out a letter and your CSA form. If you did
not receive it, and wish to support this worthy cause, please call the parish office and we will mail the CSA
form and letter to you.
I also am most grateful to those of you who have and will support the Bishop’s Appeal. Your sacrificial
gift whether large or small will assist the Bishop in reaching out to others. Many thanks.
Lent begins this coming Wednesday, February 13th. This penitential season offers us a very special
opportunity to grow in our relationship with God and to deepen our commitment to a way of life rooted in
prayer, fasting/abstinence and almsgiving. As a child, Lent was always about “What are you giving up for
Lent?” As adults, we recognize the real grace from Lent is the opportunity to transform our hearts. Begin
with this simple question: “What is God inviting me to change this Lent?”
Each of us can immediately think of something that gets in the way of our being loving and self-
sacrificing. Too often the ordinary conflicts, divisions, and difficulties in our family life are the result of
simple selfishness on our part. For example, I may choose to stubbornly defend my opinion and not listen to
another family member; or choose to intentionally hurt another; or maybe choose to hold on to wounds or
resentments from the past.
Lent is a great time to start a new pattern of prayer. One suggestion could be to use your prayer time to
listen to God without other distractions. It may be a simple change, but it so important to have a listening
heart, rather than always asking.
Lent is a great time to change our eating patterns by fasting (eating only one full meal) or abstaining (no
meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent). Fasting and abstaining also help us identify
and be in greater solidarity with the poor of the world, who live on less than a dollar a day. What a great cure
for sitting on the pity-pot.
Lent is a great time to practice generosity or almsgiving. This is not just giving from my excess, but
giving from my substance. Giving from your substance, is giving when it makes you change your lifestyle.
Generosity is an attitude. It is stewardship; that is, it is admission that no matter how much I have, all that I
have, is a gift from God and it is given to me to share with others.
During our Lenten communal journey, the Lord calls to us: “Come back to me with all of your heart.”

Con el tema ""abrir de par en par las puertas de la fe", nuestro Obispo de Reno ha comenzado la
Apelación anual. Esta recaudación diocesano es el esfuerzo de nuestras 29 parroquias de la diócesis que
ayudan y apoyan la extensión de muchos ministerios y servicios sociales en el norte de Nevada. El número
creciente de los abrumados problemas para satisfacer las necesidades básicas e son abrumadores.
A valuación de nuestra parroquia este año es de $76.263,00. Esta cifra es determinada por una
fórmula bastante interesante: los ingresos ordinarios por nosotros para los últimos tres años se van a
dividir por cada una de las 29 parroquias de la diócesis durante los últimos 3 años, que determina el
porcentaje de cada objetivo de la parroquia .
Quiero darles las gracias a George y Carol Del Carlo por aceptar la invitación a servir como nuestros
co-presidentes de nuestra SCA (Servicio Católica de apelación) este año. La semana pasada llego por
correo una carta SCA. Si usted no la ha recibido, y desea de apoyar esta noble causa, por favor llame a la
oficina de la parroquia y le enviaremos por correo el formulario SCA a usted.
Yo también estoy muy agradecido a aquellos de ustedes que tienen y tendrán apoyo del obispo de

La Cuaresma empieza el próximo miércoles, 13 febrero. Este tiempo penitencial nos ofrece una
oportunidad muy especial para crecer en nuestra relación con Dios y profundizar nuestro compromiso con
una forma de vida arraigada en la oración, el ayuno y abstinencia y la limosna. Como un niño, la Cuaresma
siempre se trataba de " ¿Voy a dar lo máximo para la Cuaresma?" Como adultos, debemos reconocer la
verdadera gracia de la Cuaresma, es una oportunidad para transformar nuestros corazones. Comenzar con
esta simple pregunta: " ¿Dios me invita a cambiar en esta Cuaresma?"
Cada uno de nosotros perdemos inmediatamente pensar en algo que se interpone en el camino de
nuestro ser amado y abnegado. A menudo son demasiados los conflictos normales, las divisiones y las
dificultades en nuestra vida familiar son el resultado de un simple egoísmo de mi parte. Puedo elegir o
defender obstinadamente mi opinión y no escuchar a otro miembro de la familia. O quizás a elegir
intencionalmente a lastimar a otro. O quizás yo elija aferrarme a heridas o resentimientos del pasado.
La Cuaresma es un excelente momento para comenzar un nuevo patrón de oración. Les sugiero,
utilizar su tiempo de oración, en un momento para escuchar a Dios. Puede ser un simple cambio, pero es
tan importante para tener un corazón que escuche, en lugar de siempre estar pidiendo.
La Cuaresma es un tiempo estupendo para cambiar nuestros hábitos alimenticios por el ayuno (comer
sólo una comida completa) o abstenciones (sin carne el Miércoles de Ceniza, el Viernes Santo y todos los
viernes de cuaresma). El ayuno y la abstinencia también nos ayudará a identificar y estar en una mayor
solidaridad con los pobres del mundo, que viven con menos de un dólar al día. Que gran pena seria
sentarnos en la lastima.
La Cuaresma es un tiempo estupendo para practicar la generosidad o la
limosna. Esto no sólo es dar de mi exceso, pero dando desde mi esencia. Dar
desde la esencia, es cuando hacemos cambiar el estilo de vida. Generosidad es
una actitud. Es administración; es decir, es admitir que no importa lo mucho que
tengo, todo lo que tengo es un don de Dios y es que se me ha dado para compartir
con los demás.
Durante la Cuaresma recorreremos nuestro camino cuaresmal, el Señor nos
llama a: "Volved a mí con todo tu corazón."

Issues of Peace and Justice
Our readings today speak of God’s initiating forgiveness and calling into service – of Isaiah, of Paul, and of the
fishermen apostles. We believe, of course, that these are some of the examples of God’s callings and that God also calls
each of us. To what, though, are we called?
The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church tells us that “making this [social] doctrine known constitutes a
genuine pastoral priority, so that men and women will be enlightened by it and will be thus enabled to interpret today’s
reality and seek appropriate paths of action: ‘The teaching and spreading of her social doctrine are part of the Church's
evangelizing mission’ (Pope John Paul II).”
“The Church's social doctrine ‘is itself a valid instrument of evangelization’ and is born of the always new meeting of
the Gospel message and social life. Understood in this way, this social doctrine is a distinctive way for the Church to carry
out her ministry of the Word and her prophetic role. ‘In effect, to teach and to spread her social doctrine pertains to the
Church's evangelizing mission and is an essential part of the Christian message, since this doctrine points out the direct
consequences of that message in the life of society and situates daily work and struggles for justice in the context of
bearing witness to Christ the Savior.’ This is not a marginal interest or activity, or one that is tacked on to the
Church's mission, rather it is at the very heart of the Church's ministry of service: with her social doctrine the
Church ‘proclaims God and his mystery of salvation in Christ to every human being, and for that very reason reveals man
to himself’” (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, #7 & #67).

FASTING AND ABSTINENCE
The Catholic Church requires its members to observe certain
dietary rules—fasting and abstinence—to recognize and mark
the importance of particular days during its liturgical year,
as well as to express penance for personal sin.
The regulations apply as follows:
Generally, the laws of fasting require that on the designated days the person eat just
one full meal and two smaller meals, and avoid eating between meals. Abstinence laws
require that the person avoid meat altogether.
The regulations governing abstinence from meat apply to all Catholics age fourteen
and older. Adults who have completed their eighteenth year until the beginning of their
sixtieth year are bound by the regulations that govern fasting. Pregnant women and sick
people are excused from the regulations.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of both fasting and abstinence; all the other
Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence only.
In addition, the Church encourages its adult members to observe some form of
penance, perhaps including some kind of fast and abstinence, on all Fridays throughout
the year.
The Church also calls for fasting prior to receiving Communion during the Mass. In
this case, the fast helps us prepare our minds and hearts for the great gift of the
Eucharist by doing something physical to help focus our attention. Church law calls for
us to avoid all food and drink, with the exception of water and medicine, for one hour
before receiving Communion. Again, this regulation does not apply to sick people or
others for whom such restrictions would jeopardize health.

La Iglesia católica necesita que sus miembros cumplen con ciertas reglas dietéticas de
ayuno y abstinencia a reconocer y marcar la importancia de ciertos días durante
El año litúrgico, así como hacer penitencia por los pecados personales.
Los reglamentos se aplican de la siguiente manera:
Las reglas del ayuno en general exigen que en los días designados la persona coma
una comida completa y dos comidas más pequeñas, y evitar comer entre comidas. La

Las normas que rigen la abstinencia de carne son aplicables a todos los católicos

La Iglesia pide también el ayuno antes de recibir la Comunión
durante la misa. En este caso, el ayuno nos ayuda a preparar la
mente y el corazón para recibir el gran regalo de la Eucaristía
también hacer algo físico para ayudar a centrar nuestra
atención. La ley de la Iglesia nos pide evitar todos los
alimentos y bebidas, con la excepción de la agua y la medicina,
una hora antes de recibir la Comunión. Una vez más, este
reglamento no se aplicará a personas enfermas o a otros los
cuales estas restricciones serían peligrosas para la salud.
