March 2 - 10

Join us for Lauds (Morning Prayer) St. Frances Cabrini Parish invites all parishioners to pray Lauds (Morning Prayer) as a community during the liturgi-cal seasons of Lent, Easter, Advent, Christmas, and vari-ous Feast Days of the Church. It starts at 8:10 AM and ends before our Daily Mass. According to USCCB, “The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office, is the daily prayer of the Church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer.” By praying the official prayer of the Church, we are joining with the Cath-olics throughout the whole world by reciting same words of the Psalms and same intentions. Introductions and directions will be given every time, so do not be afraid if you have no prior experience praying the Liturgy of the Hours!

Lent: Confessions will be held on Fridays dur-ing the Stations of the

Cross.

THE INSIDE SHOWS In this third Sunday of our reading from the Ser-mon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses ex-aggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the debris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weak-nesses, though they be as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' small-est speck-like flaws. And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventu-ally. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus’ imag-es, is true: “What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh.” By and by, the inside will show through. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ADA - Thank you to the 133 families that have given to the 2019 Annual Diocesan Appeal on behalf of our par-ish. Your generosity is gratefully accepted and respect-fully used. We are beginning the 4th week of the cam-paign, and if you have not yet made a gift or pledge, please prayerfully consider what you can do to help. Every gift makes a difference. You can make a one-time gift, or you can pledge an amount that is payable over 10 months. We want and need your participation and your support.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — One’s speech shows the bent of one’s mind. Praise no one before he or she speaks (Sirach 27:4-7). Psalm — Lord, it is good to give thanks to you (Psalm 92). Second Reading — We are given victory over death through Jesus. In the Lord our labor is not in vain (1 Corinthi-ans 15:54-59). Gospel — A good person produces good, an evil person pro-duces evil. The mouth speaks from the goodness of the heart (Luke 6:39-45). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969

Our Village House guests arrive Wednesday, March 6th and will be with us through Wednesday, April 3rd. We need your help to change their lives for the better. There are over 125 “spots” still open and in need of volunteers. Village House has proven itself to be expert in changing lives. Now in our 4th year of helping homeless women find shelter at St Frances Cabrini, we ask that you consid-er signing on for a long or short task, across one day or many days while our guests are here. Openings remain within security, medical services, laundry, breakfast, in-take desk, floor monitors, and telemarketing outreach to volunteers. Some tasks can be conducted from your home, others require your presence on campus for as little as 90 minutes or several hours assisting those less fortunate who are staying with us. Volunteers can sign up here: http://signup.com/go/hqsAjfY It is a Diocesan requirement that Virtus Training (working with vulnerable adults and children) be done once every three years. You can register and take the course online www.virtusonline.org. Please bring your Virtus Certificate of Completion to the parish office. For other prerequisites and links to important information about the Village House Program at SFC see the Village House Quick Link on the Parish Website at www.sfcabrini.org

Taize Prayer Around the Cross for Lent We will have Taize prayer services here at St. Frances Cabrini during Lent. The Taize prayer service is from an interfaith community founded in Taize, France in 1940. A Taize service provides a form of prayer that was much admired by Pope John Paul II for its sim-plicity and focus on Christ. At a Taize service we pray as we sing, as we reflect on the Scripture reading, as we sit in silence, and as

we speak aloud our prayers. The highlight of the service is an invitation to offer your concerns and joys before the cross of Jesus. We hope you’ll consider including this serene and meditative style of prayer as part of your Lenten devotions.

Watch a short example of a Taize service: https://catholiccourier.com/videos/taize-prayer / Services will be held in the church from 6:45pm-7:30pm Wed. March 20; Wed, March 27; Mon, April 1, and Mon., April 8.

Good Samaritan Episcopal (GSE) As you know, SFC has provided services as an evening shelter within the Village House pro-gram for the last 3 years. In addition to the evening shelters, the program also provides warming shelters during the day. One of the day shelters who has partnered with the program is Good Samaritan Episcopal (GSE) church located at the corner of Union Avenue and High-

way 85. This year, GSE has reached out to SFC to request volunteers support for their day shelter. GSE has daily vol-unteer opportunities, Sunday through Wednesday in 4-hour increments beginning at 7:00 am until 7:00 pm.

They need volunteers to support a total of six 4 hour volunteer shifts each day, 7:00 am to 11:00 am, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, again Sunday through Wednesday. Good Samaritan Episcopal needs our help. Those of you who are unable to support the evening shelter at SFC may find volunteer opportunities during the day at GSE. Please take a moment this week to identify days and times you can volunteer. Volunteers can view available time slots at the GSE signup site...http://signup.com/go/kYgfEGv or at the Village House site https://www.villagehousesccca.com/day-shelters.html.

Youth Ministry Everyone is on their phone nowadays, so why not youth minis-try? Youth ministry is now offering reminder texts that will keep parents and teens up-to-date on everything happening in youth ministry. Youth ministry will be sending out reminders about things to sign up for, meetings and events. We are limiting this opportunity to teens and one parent. Please email Kurt Martin ([email protected]) with your phone number and your child’s phone number if you would like to receive reminder texts.

Our first 8th grade youth group kicks off this week Sunday, March 3rd from 3:45 pm – 5:15 pm. All interested 8th graders should join us in the Parish Center.

Next week youth ministry will be bowling at Homestead Bowl in Cupertino from 7 pm – 8:30 pm. Please bring a $20 as that should more than cover the cost of bowling (bring extra if you want food). No dinner is provided that night although there is food at the bowling alley.

About Boating Safely This class covers all the California State requirements needed to obtain the, soon to be mandatory, state boating license. There is a certificate that will be issued at the end of the class once you have taken the class and passed it. This certificate can then be used to obtain the official California boating license If you have taken a boating safety class more than 5 years ago, the state requires you to have this class or something like this class as a refresher course before they will issue you the new license. Because of the amount of material to cover, though technically doable in a single day, we have found over the years that splitting this one-day class into two days, makes it more absorbable to the average student. This beginner boating class will give you the knowledge needed to obtain a boat license or safety certification in many states, including California. Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete About Boating Safely. Topics will include; Introduction to boating; Boating Laws, Safety Equipment; Basic Navigation, Trailering; Hunting and Fishing.

This is a two-day (4 hour) class on consecutive Saturdays on May 4th and 11th. If interested, please contact Chris Johnson (408)272-4530 or email at [email protected]

Daylight Saving Time starts next weekend, March 10th. Don’t forget to set you clocks ahead! Please lookout for those enjoying a walk, a jog; the extra time to be outdoors and as al-ways, “Look Twice, Save a Life” when on the road.

CHANGE OF DATES in the months of march and April FOR ST. JOSEPH DEVOTION Because Ash Wednesday is the first Wednesday of March, we are moving the Monthly Devotion of St Joseph to TUESDAY, March 5th at 7 PM in the Church We are also moving the April date to TUESDAY, April 2 at 7 pm due to the Parish Recollection Service for the Parish.

THANKS No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks. — Ambrose of Milan
