Fr. Will’s Pastoral Notes: !

You may have noticed a project going on behind the Marian grotto. Last year I celebrated the funeral mass and rituals of Christian burial for a young man from our parish Alex Hunter, the son of Jeff and Melody Hunter. He died tragically in an automobile accident at the age of 17. He was a faithful Catholic and had a great devotion to God through prayer and service. One of his classmates and friends, Dominick Panichelle asked me if he could create a memorial for Alex as a part of Dominick’s Eagle Scout Project. He proposed a prayer garden that led from the parking lot along the path that many young people and families use to access the baseball fields behind our church. Dominic’s thought was that many of Alex’s friends and many young people for years to come would be able to take a moment of reflection and prayer to slow down their busy lives, and remember that life is short, fragile, precious, and recognize our need for God. I was delighted to approve the Eagle Scout project and to honor the memory of a faith filled young man. After prayer and discernment, it was decided that a Saint Michael statue would be the center point of the Prayer Garden Memorial. Saint Michael defends us spiritually, as well as protecting us in our safe travels, along with the Guardian Angels. The Prayer Garden Memorial will be dedicated and consecrated after the annual High School Graduation Luncheon on June 3

rd, approximately 3:00 pm. We will

dedicate the area, with solemnity, to the protection of young people through the intercession of Saint Michael, asking that they always follow the ways of God, and be led to Eternal Life. Eternal Rest grant unto Alex, O Lord. !

!After consultation with the Gardening & Grounds committee, I have decided to remove a few trees from the property. The committee has advised me that several of the trees in question are causing issues with the roof and foundation of the church building in Meridian. There will be a contractor on site to remove the trees over the next few weeks. Please be mindful of the work areas. In conjunction with the removal of trees I would like to plant a few new trees at different parts of the property. If you or your family would like to sponsor the planting of a tree, please contact Ellen at the office. I have heard from several families in the fall who had parents or grandparents sponsor tree plantings in the past. This is an opportunity to continue that family legacy. !

!I will be giving a witness talk at the upcoming Festival of Praise, sponsored by St. Michael Parish, Butler. July 15

th at 2:00 pm. Please see the flyer in

upcoming bulletins for more details.!!We have been making some repairs at the Lyndora church site. After a weekend of no A/C and penance, we had the motor on the HVAC unit replaced. As well, we hired a new landscaper for the grounds in Lyndora. They will be out regularly to cut the grass, trim, and do general upkeep of the grounds. We also have a contractor that will be repairing the roof leak in Lyndora and doing some cosmetic repairs inside of the church that was damaged by the roof leak. !

Bishop David Zubik will be leading a pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, September 15, 2018. A pilgrimage is a prayerful journey to a church or shrine with the purpose of coming closer to God. To be “On Mission for the Church Alive” means quite simply that we need to be excited about our faith and our relationship with Jesus, and eager to share it. This is a special year in which our diocese will celebrate its 175th anniversary, so the pilgrimage is a great opportunity to come together as a diocesan family to pray and reflect with Bishop Zubik on our shared journey of faith. More information on the pilgrimage will be provided in upcoming bulletins.!

The Body and Blood of Christ Faith has many important facets that are effective in our

lives. Prayer and worship connect us to the God who created us and who daily gives us

purpose and provides for us. Times of community and fellowship unite us with our family in

faith to realize that we are not alone on our journey of love with God. Outreach and charity

put our faith into action so that we can be the hands and heart of Jesus in the world and

provide for the needs of others. Yet, at the heart of our faith, its essential foundation, is the

gift of God himself to his people, the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the memorial of God’s great act of love for us,

the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus. The Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ made truly present

so that we might be nourished to do the work of God in the world. The Eucharist is the source of our life as

people of faith and that to which we return all that we have received in thanksgiving to God. Inspired by this

Feast of Corpus Christi and as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! may our love for the Eucharist

increase so that our faith may remain strong in the midst of change. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn

more and to stay informed. !

Introductions, Re!introductions, and On Mission! Transition Update from Your New Butler Team

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Butler,

May the peace of Christ be with you all!

As many of you know, I will be returning to Butler this fall to serve as the administrator of the new

parish grouping that includes St. Andrew, St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, St. Michael the Archangel, St.

Paul, and St. Peter Parishes.

In my very first assignment as a priest, I was blessed to serve the communities of St. Michael the Archangel, St. Paul, and St. Peter from July 2012 until February 2015.

Since February of 2015 I have been serving as pastor of St. Alphonsus Parish in Wexford. Because I have been there such a short period of time, and given my role as president of the board of the newly formed North Hills Regional Catholic Elementary Schools, I was surprised that Bishop Zubik assigned me anywhere other than Wexford for the foreseeable future. After having some time to reflect upon the bishop’s decision, I say with confidence that if I was going to get moved from Wexford, I am sure glad that it is Butler!

When I officially return to Butler on October 15, I will be serving in a new role and with a new team of priests:

Father John Baver will be our senior parochial vicar. He was ordained in 1991 and has served at multiple parishes during his priesthood. Currently he is the pastor of Nativity Parish, and St. Germaine Parish in the South Hills.

Father Dan Waruszewski will be our parochial vicar. He was ordained in 2017 and serves at Immaculate Conception Parish in Washington, PA.

Father Will Wuenschel will be the chaplain for our Butler area nursing homes, hospital, and prison, and certainly will be an integral part of our parish life as well. As many of you already know, he was ordained in 2015 and is currently serving as the administrator at St. Fidelis. Previously, he served at St. Benedict the Abbot Parish in Peters Twp.

Deacon Mitch Natali continues his assignment as deacon. He has been faithfully serving in that role for many years at St. Paul Parish.

We are all excited and committed to serving you with the heart of Jesus Christ!

As you can imagine, this time of transition is an extremely busy and challenging one for the priests and the deacons in our diocese as we continue to serve at our current parishes while also getting ready to serve at a new parish grouping.

Already I have met with your current clergy members: Father Will Wuenschel (St. Fidelis), Father Harry Bielewicz (St. Michael the Archangel/St. Paul/St. Peter), and Father Nick Argentieri (St. Andrew) along with the aforementioned clergy team members who will serve the new parish grouping.

        (continued next page)

Page 7: Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen Parish 125 Buttercup Rd ... · Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen Parish 125 Buttercup Rd., Butler, PA 16001 June 3, 2018 Phone: 724 !482 !2690 Fax: 724 !482

Our first order of business is to develop an interim Mass (weekday, weekend, and Holy Days) and confession schedule that takes into account factors such as the number of priests available to serve (now and in the future), population trends, number of funerals (over 170 total each year for our parish grouping), size and location of churches, etc.

Once we come up with a proposal, the next step is to submit it to our regional vicar, Father Phil Farrell, for review and approval, before going to diocesan personnel for further review and final approval. The interim Mass and confession schedules will be published by August 31 and will go into effect on October 15.

All priests and deacons from our diocese will gather on June 11 and 12 at St. Paul Seminary in Crafton to begin discussing and learning about the best practices to enter into during this time of transition. We pray for everyone to be understanding, patient, and flexible with these changes.

One thing is certain there will be a lot of changes for at least a few years throughout our entire diocese before the On Mission! implementation dust settles. Our grouping has three years to become one parish, which means: One pastor, one religious education program, one pastoral council, one financial council, etc.

The changes are an evolving process. We will see how things go over the next 6 to 12 months, observing, analyzing and reviewing as we go. In time, we will seek your feedback to see if we need to make adjustments to the new Mass and confession schedule.

Please be patient and pray for us, as our lives will be in flux for quite some time. At the same time, we are praying for you as you may feel that your faith lives are in flux too as you wait to see exactly what this new grouping of parishes will mean.

One of the beauties of Butler is that we are all Butlerites, woven from the same fabric, beginning with the Divine DNA as God’s beloved children; and we bring our unique individualities to give color to our church and community!

I am sure that we occasionally will stop in Butler during the summer as the transition date nears. Perhaps I will bump into some of you at the Farm Show in August.…many of you know that I enjoy the Farm Show!

Expect to hear and learn more from us in September, as we look forward to getting to know you and serve you the best that we can.

Enjoy your summer!

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Kevin C. FazioMay 23, 2018
