Dear Alumni and Friends,As we near the end of the 2014–15 school year, many of our dreams have been

fulfilled and some disappointments have brought sorrow to us, however, with the love and support of the St. Elizabeth High School Community we have grown stronger in our faith and belief in the joy of the Resurrection.

It has been an exciting year at St. Elizabeth and soon we will graduate the Class of 2015 and welcome new alum to the ninety-four year history of the greatest school in Oakland. We continue our mission of providing a quality, Catholic, college preparatory education based upon the Catholic Social Teachings. We celebrate the wonders of God’s creation and building a just society amidst the challenge of today’s modern society. We respect life and the dignity of the human person. We know that we have a responsibility to assist the poor and vulnerable. We accept the call to be “peacemakers and to promote peace in a world surrounded by violence and conflict”.

We will soon send the Class of 2015 to pursue their post-secondary challenges. We, as a community, have prepared them well. Let us celebrate the joys of St. Elizabeth High School in all that we do.

From the Office of Institutional Advancement

Dear Alumni and Friends,Springtime brings great excitement to St. Elizabeth High School. The end of

the school year is fast approaching and seniors have their sights set on graduation and beyond. In the Office of Institutional Advancement we are taking a moment to reflect on our community of alumni and friends who joined us for the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in October, Crab Feed and Auction in February, and Invest in Hope Luncheon in March. We are continuously grateful for the support and generosity our alumni and friends extend at these events.

Over the next several months we will be gearing up for major grant writing, a new website, and planning the 2015-2016 calendar of events. We hope you will be able to join us for the Alumni Golf Tournament to be held on Friday, September 18, 2015 at Boundary Oaks Golf Course in Walnut Creek. You will find registration materials and additional information on page 15.

Perhaps the biggest change in our office this year was the passing of Sister Barbara Larner. Her presence was an integral part of our office and she provided invaluable support to the work we do. One of her favorite things to do was call our supporters to just check in or to ask a special favor. Sister Barbara started the development office at St. Elizabeth High School and continued to bring the same level of passion and hard work until her last days. You can read more about Sister Barbara and her work at St. Elizabeth High School on page 10.

Sincerely,The Office of Institutional Advancement

Mustang BasketballThe Boys and Girls Mustang Basketball squads recently had their seasons come to end after both teams made it to the Bay Counties League Championship. Coach Dwayne Hornage who is back coaching Girls Basketball after several years made it into the BCL playoffs after beating Holy Names High School in the season finale. The girls lost to California School for the Deaf in the first round of the league tournament. Sophomores Nyla Jamison (1st Team) and Nia Williams (Honorable Mention) were named to the all league teams.

The Boys team won the BCL Championship for the second year in a row. They fin-ished league play 10-0 and ended the season with a 16-10 record. The boys season ended in the quarterfinal round of North Coast Section losing a hard fought game to Anderson Valley. Junior Ronald Knighten was voted

league MVP along with Daniel Mitchell (1st team), Lonnie Jordan (2nd Team), and David Iniguez (Honorable Mention).

Both coaching staffs are already hard at work preparing for the next season.

First TeeSt. Elizabeth is continuing to partner with the First Tee of Alameda County. The mission of the First Tee program is to impact the lives of youth in the Oakland and Hayward areas by providing learning facilities and educational programs to promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.

St. Elizabeth currently has 20 students taking advantage of this program. The program takes place in the Fall, and Spring months and meets once a week at Metropolitan Golf Links. Participation in the program is not just about golf, but requires students to use real life examples in learning the values that are taught through the game of golf. Students have the ability to advance through the program, and also have the opportunity to intern at local golf courses in the East Bay as well as participate in the Annual Nature Valley First Tee Open in Pebble Beach.

Speech and Debate ClubSpeech and Debate is a new academic club at SEHS. This year, six students, along with the two coaches, are working together to develop a program that is beneficial and sustainable for years to come. While there are many events to participate in through Speech and Debate, SEHS has decided to focus on Individual Events. This category allows students to be creative in writing and speaking about topics they are passionate about, or sharing experiences from their life. The team practices once a week and practices are focused on developing public speaking and writing skills, along with team building activities. Currently, the team has observed one tournament to gain a better understanding of the structure of Speech and Debate, and has plans to compete in their first novice tournament this May. It is our hope that the club will grow and develop over the years, providing a space where students are empowered to channel their opinions, ideas, and experiences.

First Tee program

“Thru the First Tee Program I was introduced to golf. Golf has taught me many lessons of life. The most important was the value of patience. If something is worth doing then the failure that comes along in the process won’t matter”. David Iniguez ‘15

What is your fondest memory of SEHS?I really enjoyed being a campus minster. It was a great opportunity to deepen in faith and serve my fellow students. The Kairos retreat was the pinnacle of that service. It provided our class with a very special time to bond and solidify our friendships for years to come. A close second was the sports program.

When you attended SEHS what extra curricular activities were you involved in?I was able to play competitively in many different sports, and that was a benefit of a smaller school. Now, most students specialize in one sport year round. For some, the specialization may work out—but I really enjoyed the opportunity to experience different sports. I was also in one play and helped as a stage hand with one more.

What are some of the changes you’ve seen in the neighborhood surrounding SEHS over the years?I wish we had the Fruitvale Transit Village when I was at SEHS. I enjoy spending time there today. It anchors an excellent cultural center. It is hard for me to find better comfort food anywhere else in the city.

What book would you recommend to all teenagers? No question: the Chronicles of Narnia. It is a wonderful series centered in faith principles. There is no better series for teenagers. A close second would be the “Lord of the Rings.” It is a bit more difficult to read, but well worth it.

If you had a family slogan, what would it be?Nothing is more important than family.

Was there a lasting lesson, teacher, friendship, event, etc. that occurred during your time at SEHS that has stayed with you until adulthood? There are so many events, but none more memorable than experiencing the 1989 earthquake with Terry Simmons-Bucher, Sister Rebecca, Sister Reyna, and 4 other students. We were in the Santa Cruz Mountains setting up for the Kairos retreat.

Then it hit—we were in a conference hall setting up for the event. The room we were in was moving so much, I could not walk. The tables and chairs were bouncing around the room. It was the longest traumatic event I had ever experienced and I didn’t know what to think or do. It felt like I was spinning in a clothes dryer. When we were able to make it outside, after the big shaking, someone reached into the van and turned on the radio. It was the sound of the Emergency Broadcast System, normally only heard during weekly testing periods. I thought I was living in a bad dream and I was sick to my stomach. One newscaster said the bay bridge had fallen- we didn’t know what to think. The next few hours were long as we were trying to take in what occurred. Fortunately, the majority of the class was on a bus and had not left the bay area and they were able to return home quickly. That was a really long day—probably not story on would want to hear in a publi-cation like this, but no-doubt the most memorable. A memory those of us in that old building in the Santa Cruz Mountains remember like yesterday.

Y ou may remember from your own experience at SEHS or through reading past issues of the Stampede that each year students participate in a “Special Session”

designed to take learning out of the classroom. This year, we have further refined our focus to more closely align with our Catholic values. Each grade level explores one of the Catholic Social Teachings through Christian service in the community. The entire school, including faculty, staff, and students, participated in three days of service and made connections between the Catholic Social Teachings and service to the community.

Days of service included:• Catholic Worker to serve food and paint rooms

• Glide Memorial Church to help in the kitchen and feed the homeless

• Habitat for Humanity to assist with home improvements

• Neighboring elementary schools to prepare and teach anti-bullying lessons

• St. Elizabeth Elementary School to provide a variety of academic support

What is your fondest memory of SEHS?The great Friday night dances in the gymnasium!!

Why did you first give to SEHS?I first gave to SEHS because the school’s mission, goals and results in providing a quality Catholic education to very deserving students is worthy of my [& others’] charitable support.

Why do you continue to give?I give undoubtedly due to the fact that both of my parents and their siblings were helped by relatives and friends when immi-grating here during the Great Depression. As a youngster, I heard many stories of networks of friends and relatives helping one and another find jobs, lodg-ing and other necessities. I grew up in East Oakland, all six of my siblings attended St. Bernard Elementary School and four of us attended Catholic high school. Financial assistance provided by pastors, nuns and others in our community made this pos-sible. Now it’s my turn to return such generous favors!

In what ways do you give? I give cash donations and generally support alumnae events and fundraisers… SEHS is my primary charity. For the last several years, my three classmates pictured above and I, among

Institutional Advancement

others, help with the Annual Tony Lema Golf Tournament. Participating in fundraising events with fellow alumni makes us appreciate our contributions more and thereby encourages us to continue our support of SEHS. When one of us gives we’re all inclined to do the same.

What do you tell others about SEHS?I brag about what a great high school SEHS was when I attended, what a great school it is today and how important it is to continue the invaluable tradition of Catholic education. SEHS has an enviable record for graduates continuing on to higher education. Others feel the same. Ernie Fierro and I have

met members of our local SIRs branch, who lived in our neigh-borhoods and attended public schools who have great respect for SEHS and donate by partici-pating in our golf tournament.

Was there a lasting lesson, teacher, friend-ship, event, etc. that occurred during your time at SEHS that has stayed with you until adulthood?I still see classmates from ’58, ’59 and ’60 several times a year. We take great pride in supporting our alma mater. I feel so fortunate when I get together with friends from 55 years ago who’s company I continue to enjoy!

I n October of 2014 Sister Barbara Larner O.P. was inducted into the St. Elizabeth High School Hall of Fame.

She was always very humble about this honor, questioning why she, of all people, should be inducted. We had no way of knowing that just a few weeks later, on November 14, 2014, Sister Barbara would be welcomed home into the loving arms of God.

Sister Barbara Larner was born and raised in Berkeley, California. She attended School of the Madeleine and then Presentation High School where she served as editor of the school paper as a junior, and student body president as a senior, before study-ing at the University of California, Berkeley.

After working for two years as a secre-tary during her break from her college career, she rejoined the staff of the UC Daily Californian as associate city editor. Sister decided to enter the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose on a trial basis. This trial lasted 59 years.

Teaching was Sister Barbara’s first employment –eight years as an elemen-tary teacher. In 1965 she was named elementary principal in South Los Angeles at St. Michael’s which was right in the middle of the first Watts riots. The ministry in South LA proved challenging but most rewarding. Some of the parents and students she met there proved to be life-long friends.

Following her work at St. Michael’s School, Sister Barbara was transferred to

an adjacent school that was experiencing a cultural transition. Her new school, St. Frances Cabrini, had 650 students, and an equal number of challenges and rewards. During this period, she also served at Twin Towers jail as a ‘compan-ion’ for incarcerated women.

In 1979, Sister Barbara was assigned to Saint Elizabeth High School in Oakland to teach English and moder-ate The Thuringian. Thus began an 18 year period of service. In the early 80’s it became clear that the school needed to initiate a development program that would help alumni and friends sup-port the school. Sister Barbara began the first formal development program to improve public relations efforts and to raise funds for St. Elizabeth High

School. For the first year, then Principal Sister Mary Brennan allowed Sister Barbara one period a day for this effort. Five years later, she was a full-time development director. During this time, Sister Barbara earned an additional Master’s Degree in Philanthropy and Development from Winona Minnesota’s St. Mary’s College.

Along with Annette Maggiora ’51, Sister started the first St. Elizabeth High School Crab Feed and Auction. Sister also established popular events such as the Alumni Mass & Brunch, Circle of Friends gatherings, and first Capital Campaign.

During these early days of develop-ment, Sister Barbara met and became friends with Mrs. Gladys Valley, head of the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation, a friendship that was des-tined to be a special gift for many years. When the need for a capital campaign was recognized, Mrs. Valley and her foundation were asked for a leadership gift which was graciously granted. This key gift enabled us to approach other foundations and obtain additional

support. The Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation continues to be a faithful supporter of SEHS.

After an additional eight year ministry in South Los Angeles as development director for Vision of Hope and the two schools for which she had served as principal, and a three year assign-ment helping in the Congregation’s Development Office, Sister was returned to Saint Elizabeth High School as a retired volunteer. In addition, she made time to co-direct the Las Casas ESL pro-gram serving over 10,000 adults.

When asked for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony what her future goals were for St. Elizabeth High School, Sister Barbara said, “I am looking for-ward to the day when $1,000,000 gift comes in for St. Elizabeth High general school needs, no strings attached. I am looking forward to the day when St. Elizabeth can welcome every student who applies and not have the school or the families have to struggle to make ends meet! Dreams can become reality! I believe!”

In Memoriam

12 S A I N T E L I Z A B E T H H I G H S C H O O L

William “Bill” Stanley Cox, 84, passed away November 19th, 2014 after a val-iant battle with cancer. He spent his last days at his home in Foresthill with his wife Roselyn of 64 years and his children by his side.

Born and raised in Oakland, California, Bill graduated from St. Elizabeth High School in 1948 where his deep ties to Oakland baseball history and high school sports began. He was signed to his first professional baseball contract by Casey Stengal and played minor league baseball from 1948 to 1950 as a pitcher, including time with the Cardinal’s organization.

In 1950, Bill married the love of his life, Roselyn, and the two of them created a beautiful family in the East Bay. Bill is survived by his wife, eight children, 19 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a lifetime of great friends.

He is remembered for coaching the Bill Erwin Post, Sam Bercovich-sponsored Oakland American Legion baseball teams in which many players went on to play college and profes-sional baseball and have cited their time playing for Coach Cox as the highlight of their careers. As an American Legion coach, in 1966, Bill took his team to the American Legion World Series Championship in South Carolina, in

which they won, bringing great pride to the City of Oakland. Many of the players on this team were students at St. Elizabeth High School. Following the World Series win, Bill was recognized by the California State Assembly for his tireless efforts and abilities in reach-ing and winning the World Series. Also in 1966, Bill was named the Cal-Hi Sports State Baseball Coach of the Year. Bill worked as the St. Elizabeth athletic director and varsity baseball coach from

1960-69. In addition to baseball, Bill coached high school basketball at St. Elizabeth and went on to referee high school basketball throughout the East Bay Region.

Many St. Elizabeth High School alumni have commented on the ways Coach Cox influenced their lives. Tom Hansen ’63 played for Cox for eight years starting in grammar school through high school, he remarked that Coach Cox was the reason he went into the coaching profession himself. Joe Panella ’58 commented that, “Bill was an institution at St. Elizabeth’s and the entire Oakland community. He had

a positive effect on my life and career in baseball as well as my career in coaching. I will remember and be thankful for everything

he did for me and the many boys of our grammar and high school teams.”

Following his retirement, he and Roselyn moved to Foresthill to a home he called “paradise.” His generous lov-ing spirit, his faith in God, his love for people, baseball, and celebrating family and friends will be missed by all who knew him.

A complete obituary is available at www.klumppsfuneralhome.com/

The backbone of a team is the coach, this factor for St. Elizabeth’s baseball team is Bill Cox… We are very fortunate to have his talents distributed to our team at SEHS.

The “All Class Years” ReunionOctober 25, 2014 was a great evening for all those whom attended the “All Class Years” St. Elizabeth Elementary School, and St. Elizabeth High School Reunion. Many classmates came out near and far to celebrate the reunion, some who had not seen their classmates in almost 25 years. There were lots of laughter, hugs, and contact exchanges. The venue, food, decorations, DJ, and Photographer were great! Tara Sykes-Holmes ’87 did a wonderful job of decorating and making sure we had the red and white school vibe!

Eloise Gerken, a member of the SEHS Alumni team brought that St. Elizabeth spirit to the event and greeted everyone. Her presence was much appreciated. Claudia Briones who is also part of the SEHS Alumni team, made sure our event prizes were memorable. The giveaways definitely brought smiles and appreciation.

We were pleased to see our high school sweethearts Dotwan Wilson ‘87 and Andrea Sidney-Wilson ‘88 support our event by greeting and making sure everyone had a gift to take home. Much work went into making sure the “All Class Years” Reunion was special and could not have been done without the following host: Ametrius Sidney ‘87, Eric Whisenton ‘88, Erinn Huriyyah-Godfrey ‘88, Sabrina Gutierrez-Long ‘90

We received an abundance of positive feedback and we are looking forward to doing something special this summer. Our goal is to set the stage for all those who are interested in finding creative ways to keep that St. Elizabeth closeness alive.

On behalf of hosts, I would like to thank everyone who came out to celebrate and made the evening special. We look forward to seeing everyone at our next “All Class Years” event.

Sincerely, Michelle Francis ‘88

Class of 1965 Reunion CelebrationThe Class of 1965 is celebrating the 50th anniversary of our auspicious graduation from SEHS. To mark this milestone, we are planning a reunion party to be held on November 14, 2015, at the Alameda Elks’ Club.

Several class members are re-connecting on Facebook, catching up, exchanging news and discussing reunion ideas. You can join us by logging on to Facebook and going to our class page, “Saint Elizabeth HS Class of ‘65”, or use this URL: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SEH65/.

Our main effort right now is to locate as many classmates as possible. We would like to get updated email addresses, phone numbers and mailing addresses so we can keep you informed of the reunion plans. Please send all contact information to Joanne (DesRosiers) Tumey [email protected], (928-706-3373), or Diane Cushman at [email protected], (408-887-7108). Also please spread the word to any classmates with whom you are in touch. We want everyone to come!

And let us know if you’d like to help in the planning; there’s a lot to do!
