"God loves Families "

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus, we have celebrated Christmas with great joy, as we welcome the birth of the Son of God, the Son of Mary and Joseph. God chose to become human to live with us in our joys, sorrows, and illnesses. However, as a human being he needed the warmth of a family. Mary and Joseph, chosen by God, became the parents of Jesus and bore a very great responsibility, but their trust was always placed in God. It is in this family of Nazareth where Jesus grows and is formed as a human being.

Today's Gospel describes some of the obligations that Mary and Joseph had to fulfill according to the Law of Moses. The Hebrew custom was that parents would go to Jerusalem to present their first-born and consecrate him to the Lord. At the same time, they were to bring an offering in accordance with their financial means. The Holy Family fulfills this mandate by going to the Temple to present and consecrate their first-born, the Child Jesus.

A holy man named Simeon lived in Jerusalem. The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ the Lord. Moved by the Holy Spirit, he went to the temple and took the child in his arms and blessed God. Simeon represents the people of Israel who were waiting for the Messiah. With his own eyes, he sees the Savior they were expecting, Light of the nations. Mary and Joseph were amazed by what Simeon announces to them, that the child will be a sign of contradiction, for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and a sword will pierce her soul. Faced with this astonishing news, the only thing left for these young parents was to meditate and wait for the future of what would become of this child.

What does the Holy Family of Mary and Joseph teach the families of today? Mary and Joseph are two young people who have responded to God's call to participate in his plan of Salvation. They are two young people of faith with plans to start their own family. God comes out to meet them and invites them to be the parents of his Son. They are a humble and simple couple who had also been waiting for the Messiah, not knowing that they would be his parents. As parents in training, they faced many challenges. One obstacle was the persecution of Herod, who wanted to kill the child that was to threaten his ruling. They must flee to Egypt at the command of God himself. They went to foreign lands looking for accommodation and places to live and work to support themselves as a family. They dedicated their entire lives to the care of the Son of God. They shared their love, parental warmth, spirituality, culture, customs, and traditions with Jesus. Two young people without experience or training learned to be parents with the Son of God.

Today we ask the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph to intercede for all the families of the world so that the Child Jesus is at the center of our lives and brings us divine blessings.

Fr. Jose Ugalde, MSpS

Prayer Shawl Ministry Our Prayer Shawl Ministry did not stop because of Covid-19; it is alive and well thanks to our generous parishioners for knitting and crocheting beautiful shawls to comfort those who are ill or alone or just need a hug of comfort. I like how Father Jose calls it ‘God’s embrace’ when you wrap that shawl around your shoulders for comfort! We want you to know that we are here for you. Please call the office, or call me directly, and we will prepare a special shawl for you to pick up. Leave your name and phone number please so that we can contact you. These shawls are for you to ward off your worries and ease your suffering no matter what the cause is. I must thank those who just recently dropped off shawls for our ministry: Carol Taylor, Rose Ann Smith, Rena Siccardi, and Perpetua Delute. (Someone else dropped off a number of shawls, but there is no name and I am unable to thank you for your generosity). All I can say is you are, indeed, the hands and heart of Christ as you create these gifts of comfort. Thank you all. We now have a Prayer Shawl Cupboard in the alcove as you go into the kitchen (right side). There are patterns and beautiful yarn just donated by Sonja Garmanian for our use. Please help yourself to whatever you can use for shawl making. If you know of someone who might be in need of a comforting hug (via a lovely shawl), call me. Joan Kluck/Coordinator

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish would like to recognize all of the front line workers who are serving our parish community and the general public during this SARS-COV2 pandemic. A table with a banner will be outside in the breezeway, and/or in the vestibule and two cups at either end of the banner. One with “clean” sharpie pens and one for “used” sharpie pens. After a pen is used to sign the banner it would be placed in the “used” cup. We would invite our parishioners to sign the banner with their name, or the names of their loved ones who are serving others during this pandemic. If anyone would not feel comfortable or available to come to church to sign the banner, one of the church staff or Parish Safety team members could sign / print the name of the individuals. This recognition would be for all of the front line workers who have been serving others during this pandemic. This would include health care workers, first responders, priests, teachers, pilots, construction workers, waste management personnel, store workers, truck drivers, grocery store workers, day care/elder care workers and volunteers serving others during this pandemic. The banner will be blessed by our Pastor, Father Jose and hung in the fellowship hall or outside in the breezeway to remind our parishioners to pray for those who are serving others. If you have any questions please contact a Parish Safety Team or Knights of Columbus member. Thank you for your service to others.

A WAITING HARVEST Vocation Awareness

Finding a Spiritual Director Part II

O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more your priests, And those consecrated in the religious life. We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother. Jesus give us priests according to your heart. Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them!

For information on becoming a Religious Priest Missionary of the Holy Spirit or a Diocesan Priest contact one of the following people: Serra Club: Arthur Adams

Priests: Fr. Jose Ugalde, M.Sp.S. Fr. Jesus Sanchez, M.Sp.S

Fr. Manuel Rosiles, M. Sp.P.

Here is some advice on how not to begin. Do not call the priest and say, “Father, will you be my spiritual director?” Many priests will reply, “No, I cannot take another directee right know. I have too many other obligations.” Instead call the priest and say, “Father, I’m trying to grow in holiness and to know God’s will for my life. I might be called to the priesthood. Can you meet with me to discuss this? I need some guidance.” Most priests will grant a single appointment for such a request. During this appointment, you can honestly discuss your strengths, weaknesses, sins, and vocational discernment. Ask for his wisdom on how you should procced. He will ask you many questions and interview you to see how to advise you. The truth is, you are interviewing him as well to determine if he is the right spiritual director for you (and he is quite aware that you are doing this). Did you feel trust and rapport during the session? Did he give advice that helped you? Is he the kind of priest that you would like to become, if you are called to be a priest? Is he

joyful and prayerful, faithful to the Magisterium and teaching of the church? This is the kind of spiritual director you want.

At the end, if you feel that he might be a good fit, ask him if he would consider seeing you again about these things in the future. Do not make an appointment yet, but just leave the door open. Get

his e-mail address so you can more easily make another appointment later. Then make an

appointment with another priest and repeat the

process. Developing this relationship with a priest by

a first appointment will often persuade that priest to take you as directee. I know this well because I have been persuaded in this manner on many occasions to

take on yet another young man as spiritual directee to help him discern his vocation.

This week please pray for Bro. Oscar Rodriguez.

As we all know, the “social distancing” practices have created unique challenges to the way we practice our faith.

Nothing is more important than all of us taking the necessary steps to protect and ensure the health and well-being of our families, friends, neighbors, as well as our parish.

This year our parish share of the Appeal is $151,672. If we exceed this goal, all excess payments received will come back to us and we will put that towards recovery of lost offertory donations.

In addition, this year 10% of all the funds collected through the ACA (excluding our rebate) will be placed into a special Parish Solidarity Fund at the Archdiocese.

In this way, your donations will help us, but will also help other parishes recover.

The reality is that many of your fellow parishioners may not be able to participate this year, so your support is more important than ever.

Be assured of my gratitude for your gift –whatever the amount— and of my continuing prayers for you and your loved ones!

Fr. Jose Ugalde MSpS

The 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway, and we are

seeking everyone’s participation this year so that we reach

our goal of $151,672.

All contributions received in excess of this Archdiocesan

goal will come directly back to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton as a

rebate.

Our 2020 ACA rebate goal will be used for lost offertory do-

nations.

If you gave to the Appeal last year, I ask you to consider in-

creasing your gift by 5% this year. If you are not sure what

to give, would you consider a gift of $365 ($1 per day) ?

Because of the current situation, we have three simple ways

to for you to donate:
