Let us attend to what is good, pleasing, and acceptable in the sight of God who formed us...and let those who have
love in Jesus Christ keep the commandments of Christ.

From Our Pastor:Following Jesus Christ is not easy He makes that clear in the Gospel this Sunday (Luke
14:25-33) with two major directives for His disciplesFirst, Jesus directs us that selfless, self-giving love is essential to discipleship, as He
says in the Gospel that our love for God must surpass all our human notions of love, and that “whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be my disciple” Our Lord’s path of selfless love is difficult, but it is the only one worth walking, for the reward is eternal life in Heaven
Jesus’ second directive is that following Him in selfless love requires more than a feeling or vague inspiration He wants us to put our reason and intelligence to work To follow Jesus and love Him with all our being is more than an emotion – it is an act of our will That’s why Jesus gives the examples of the builder and the king, for they had to temper their zeal with the gift of reason As disciples of Christ, we cannot use our feelings about things or about other people as excuses for not following Jesus Our feelings about various aspects of life, love, relationships and human existence, can sometimes get disconnected from God’s directives – directives rooted in His Word and teachings If we rely solely on feelings, apart from our reason and intellect, then the conversion that Christ wants for us at the level of our heart and soul might not occur or last very long Faith along with reason bears the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control Following Christ is not a one-time decision – rather, it is a daily and life-long decision that engages the whole person
So how do we follow Jesus’ discipleship directives? We can re-commit ourselves to prayer (talk to and listen to God, in communion with Him) – pray the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet and grace before meals; begin and end our day with a prayer of thanksgiving to God for all He has done and is doing in our lives; read the Bible in a prayerful way; if you’re married, pray with your spouse and your children In our love for Jesus, we can follow His directives, by: keeping His Commandments ( John 14-15); frequenting Confession as needed (a Sacrament of healing, forgiveness and conversion; Matthew 16, John 20, 2 Corinthians 5); attending and praying at Mass each week; and consciously doing corporal and spiritual works of mercy, which include forgiving and praying for others Saint Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997) has said that “being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat… Be faithful in small things, because it is in them that your strength lies… We can do no great things, only small things with great love” Let us strive, by God’s grace, to love and follow Jesus more each day, and encourage others, by our words and manner of life, to do the same
With peace and prayers in Christ,Fr. William

IN MEMORIAMPlease remember in your prayers this week a number of people
connected to our parish family who have died recently Gerald Schildgen died on August 22 and his funeral Mass was offered on Monday, August 26 Gerald was 87 at the time of his death and passage to eternal life A number of things were dear to his heart – faith, family, friends, farming, fishing and Farmalls, to name a few Farming was in Gerald’s blood from the beginning, and was so till the end Even during his retirement, and also as his health began to fail, he looked forward to helping out at the Schildgen family farm, the farm he loved He was a devoted husband of 62 years to his beloved wife Florence, who preceded him in death on 2015 Together they raised four children – Dan, Elaine, Gary and Carol (Carol died in infancy) Gerald’s great love was his beautiful family He was also a devoted member of our parish throughout his life As we pray for him, may we also pray for Dan & Kim, Elaine & Larry, Gary & Sandy, his sister Sally, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all of his family and friends in this time of sorrow
We also pray for Connie Fritz who died on August 19 Her funeral service was held at the funeral home on August 24 Connie was 78 at the time of her unexpected death She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife to Eldon Fritz, and mother to five children: Rhonda, Rene, Robin, Roger and Ryan She was also very devoted to our parish family Being with family was her great joy in life, treasuring each moment As we pray for her, may we pray too for Rhonda & Mitch, Rene & Bob, Robin & Alvin, Roger, Ryan & Julie, and for all of her family
We also want to remember in our prayers Darlene Giesen (the mother of Jim Giesen of our parish) who died on August 22, as well as Joyce Mahr (the wife of Bob Mahr of our parish) who died on August 24 May they rest in the peace of Christ, and may the Holy Spirit bring comfort to Jim and his family, as well as to Bob and all of his family as they mourn the passing of their loved onesEternal rest grant unto Gerald, Connie, Darlene and Joyce, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
YOU ARE NEEDED!Before His Ascension to Heaven, Jesus tells the Apostles to go forth
and teach all nations This command of Jesus extends to us Thus, we have the obligation and duty to pass on our beautiful Catholic Faith to our children Our K-6 Religious Education Program is in need of a couple of volunteer catechists to teach the Faith to our young children The program meets on Wednesday evenings from 6-7 PM Catechist guides and lesson plans are provided, and the class sizes are small Please call the parish office to assist in this important ministry
