All are Welcome Here! This is your home and we are your family!
First Sunday of Advent
DECEMBER 2, 2018 2 SAINT BERNARD
In today's Gospel we hear the words of Jesus warning us that there will be things that scare us, things we don’t understand, and that people will “die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world” (Luke 21:26). Jesus then reminds them and us that we will also encounter him in all his glory at the end of time. But, we are not to fear. In Christ will come peace to all. This is a great reminder for all of us as this still happens today. People are often afraid of things happening in our world, and in their lives. That fear can distract us from focusing and clinging to the only thing that is guaranteed-the unconditional love of God. Jesus reminds people to stand tall and raise their heads instead of being filled with fear. Jesus warns against our hearts becoming “drowsy” from the things like the “anxieties of daily life” (Luke 21:34). He also warns that the pressures of daily life can catch up to us like a trap! Traps catch those who are not prepared, those who are not mindful or aware of what surrounds them. Our goal this Advent is that we remain mindful of the presence of God and he ways that he will guide our hearts. Jesus reminds us that with God all things are possible. Let us begin this season of Advent with full confidence that God is with us and even when life gets scary, we can, and should, keep our focus on God.

It’s a great way to prepare spiritually for Christmas.
The GIVING TREE
Some gift donations must be returned by December 10th and others by December 16th.
Among the recipients of the generous gift of our parish community are Hour Children, Mercy First, Catholic Charities, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Deacon Mendez), Sisters of Life, Mercy Home (special adults) and some
neighborhood residents. Our gifts will brighten the lives of many, ranging from the unborn and their mothers,
through children of all ages, and the adults of Mercy Home. If you purchased a gift ahead of time, please just
label the gift with the age and gender so we can sort them easily. Additionally, we always receive many requests for
teens especially from MERCY FIRST and HOUR CHILDREN. Gift cards are always a great idea for that age group! Please remember to bring your gift UNWRAPPED and
attach the ornament from the tree to it. The gifts need to be dropped off in Manhattan. An SUV or van will most likely be needed. If anyone is interested, please contact the Parish
House and leave your name and number.

All are welcome!
STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT We will all have that day when we are standing before God and our life is played out like a movie. When this happens and God asks each of us, “What have you done with the gifts that I have given you?” How will you respond? When I stand before God,
I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say “I used everything you gave me”!
