DISCIPLES MAKING DISCIPLES

On the last Sunday of Lent, we remember the sacrifice that Jesus made for us when he accepted the cross. Throughout this week, Holy Week, we remember that Jesus was obedient even unto death so that our sins would be forgiven.

QuestionsWhat can you do this week to remember the sacrifice Jesus made? How can you show your gratitude for his sacrificial gift?

Saint Casilda

Some saints’ names are far more familiar to us than others, but even the lives of obscure holy persons teach us something.

And so it is with Saint Casilda. Her father was a Muslim leader in Toledo, Spain, in the 10th century. Casilda was a devout Muslim but was kind to Christian prisoners. She became ill as a young woman but did not trust that any of the local Arab doctors could cure her. So she made a pilgrimage to the shrine of San Vicenzo in northern Spain. Like so many other people who made their way there—many of them suffering from hemorrhages—Casilda sought the healing waters of the shrine. We’re uncertain what brought her to the shrine, but we do know that she left it relieved of illness.

In response, she became a Christian and lived a life of solitude and penance not far from the miraculous spring. It’s said that she lived to be 100 years old. Her death likely occurred around the year 1050.

FAMILY CORNER

With All Your Heart is Saint Bede Catholic Church’s spiritual approach to effect a continuing transformation in the hearts of our parish community of disciples making disciples.

HEART TO SERVE

“…in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples.” - Matt 26:18

Saint Bede parish will receive many visitors over the coming weeks as we commemorate the events of Holy Week and Eastertide. On average, about 3,500 people worship at Saint Bede each weekend, and during Easter this number swells. What will our visitors experience? Will they be welcomed by a multitude of accepting and cheerful faces? Will space be made available for them, and will they receive whatever worship aids are needed to join in our liturgical celebration? Or, once they enter the Nave, will we glare at boisterous children or scold them like the Pharisees who asked Jesus to silence the disciples cheering his entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19:39)? Will those who are visiting and even considering rejoining the Catholic faith wish to return?

Each parishioner is an instrument of welcome to the “house” of Saint Bede. It is our role to personify warmth and friendliness and to help others feel fellowship as members of one body of Christ.

The core of our parish’s welcoming environment is those who serve in our Parking and Greeter Ministries. Both ministries need additional volunteers. Can you assist for 30 minutes before and after Mass?

• Greeters - A greeter’s role is to offer a warm “hello” and “goodbye” to people at Mass and other church events. Couples and families are encouraged to volunteer together. This is a great way for new parishioners to get involved in the parish. Contact Joe or Peggy Boggan at (315) 738-7335 or [email protected]. • Parking Ministry - This ministry’s primary focus is to welcome everyone coming to 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass (with hopes to expand to the 11:00 a.m. Mass in the near future), help them easily find available parking spaces and ensure the safety of our parking area. Contact Art Bornstein at (757) 564-6396.

If Jesus Christ has made a triumphal entry into our hearts, He reigns there in peace and love. As his disciples, we should manifest those same qualities. To build community we must invite others to join with us with all their hearts. How will we share Christ’s love with those around us at Mass this Easter season?

the Church Office so arrangements can be made.
