Dear Parishioners of St. Barbara, I could not even imagine that one day I would have to write this message. But the day has finally arrived! I have been announc-ing my departure from St. Barbara for the last two months. Some of you might have even wondered: “when is he going to leave?” Well, my new term at Our Lady Queen of Angels parish in New-port Beach begins with the new fiscal year this July. I just want to take this opportunity to say “goodbye” and to express my gratitude toward St. Barbara parish and all the parishioners. I was assigned to St. Barbara in July 2016. Even though that was my third parish, and I have been familiar with parish ministry for the most part, still quite a few things were new for me. For example, I have never been to a parish with a Vietnamese community. Of all the Catholic churches in the diocese of Orange, St. Barbara has the largest Vietnamese community by far… However, eventu-ally things began to come together, and I fell in love with the place. I got to know the school children as I had mass for them almost every week. I always support Catholic education. It is nice to see the kids marching to their classrooms in uniform. It is even better to instill in them a sense of reverence for the Catholic traditions. I also be-came more familiar with the movement Thieu Nhi Thanh The (or the Vietnamese “Eucharistic Youth—” which is not a faulty translation, I think, but not a great one either). Before I came here, I did know about this movement among Vietnamese Catholic children/teens, but I never had any involvement with it. Slowly I began to fall in love with the movement as I had the bilingual Mass for these kids quite often on Saturday evenings. I will miss them dearly when I am gone. I want to thank my co-workers—Fr. Tuan the pastor, Fr. Ramon and Fr. Thai the associates, and deacons Anh, Carlos and Hao—for all their support. I also would like to express my gratitude toward all the parish staff members, as well as members of the Pastoral Councils (English, Spanish, and Vietnamese). Finally I am greatly indebted to all of you parishioners of St. Barbara: those who do read my bulletin writings, and also the ninety-nine percent of those who do not! I am grateful for all your love, support, and also “critical criticism.” We know that ministers are not indispensable in the Catholic Church as we frequently come and go. But it is Jesus Christ who always remains. I hope that you all will welcome Fr. Benjamin Hoang, the one coming after me, as you have welcomed me. We all come with both our strengths and our limitations. If you are able to accept both: it is a sign that you are good Catholics… Please remember to keep one another in prayer as we walk this journey of faith as pilgrims toward God’s Kingdom. May God bless you always!

Tôi biết rằng muốn biết một ngôn ngữ lưu loát (to master a language) khó vô cùng…
