Open Your Eyes Community of Faith!

In these troubling times, we can be assured that our

faith gives us shining examples of hope. We do not believe simply because we are told to, but we believe, we carry on, and we overcome because it is our promise. We have experienced

God time and time again in our own lives of fulfilled promises. We have never been promised complete relief from suffering.

The man blind from birth in the Gospel of John had not been a sinner, but still he suffered. Even in his suffering he

had enough faith to believe that life would continue and he would have his needs fulfilled. The man was not bound by his

blindness, but it is rather the shortsightedness of the pharisees that comes to light. They are so bound by their legalistic

understanding of faith, they are unable to see the goodness brought about by fidelity to God. The formerly blind man does not fully comprehend how he is able to see, but knows Jesus touched

him. Our sacramental life in the Church is filled with

moments of touch. That might be what makes this time so difficult for me. Touch, without any words, conveys multiple

meanings. We feel oiled hands and refreshing water on our heads at baptism, we feel the host placed in our hands and the

drink of Christ’s blood on our tongues during Eucharist. We anoint, we shake hands, we embrace, we bump fists and slap

five, we pat each other on the back. We hold crying children and support those sobbing with grief. How do we do this virtually? Take some time in these days of less activity and

less contact with other humans as a time to reflect. Share stories with your family of times of uncertainty and how your faith helped

you to overcome. Consider times when you were ‘blind’ to injustice or felt hopeless to help. Call a neighbor, a friend, and/or

relatives. We can continue to be community even if we are uncertain. Our faith still binds us together and opens our eyes to

the possibilities beyond our hunkered down existence.
