From the Pastor’s Desk...
ALL LIFE – Also, our celebration of Respect Life Sunday is especially well timed because today is October 4th---the Memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi and the conclusion of the celebration of the 2020 Season of Creation. https://seasonofcreation.org/
BEYOND THE BIRDBATH Francis of Assisi was anything but a cute gnome-like, inert garden ornament. He waswild for God and wild to follow the callof God in his life. He was not taking hissignals or significance from thedominant culture (secular or church) of
his time, but from the untamed Gospel. Two examples of Francis’ un-tamed-ness were his encounter with a Sultan and his deep sense that Creation is a gift not a possession.
In the year 1219 Francis and a few companions arrived in Egypt while the Christians were besieging the city of Damietta as part of the Fifth Crusade. Francis crossed the battle lines and asked if he could see the Sultan. For whatever reason, the Islamic forces did not kill the friar and Francis met with Sultan al-Malik-al-Kamil. As I understand the story Francis went with the intention of converting the Muslim leader to Christ. The Sultan did not convert and three days later Francis left Damietta. Francis returned to Italy profoundly moved by this encounter and crafted a new and creative vision for his brothers about how they could go among the Muslims, about the things Friars could do and say “that would please God”. More than four centuries later the Second Vatican Council stated that the Church regards Muslims “with esteem” and urged Christians to work with their Muslim sisters and brothers to promote social justice and moral welfare, peace and freedom, for the benefit of all.
ANOTHER VINEYARD – Today, for the third Sunday in a row, the Gospel presents us with a parable set in a vineyard. I think the first point of today’s parable is that we do not own the vineyard; rather, the owner has entrusted the care of his vineyard to us as stewards and the owner expects us to account for what we have done with his vineyard. Secondly, we rebel against his rightful ownership and try to claim the vineyard as our own, even going so far as killing the owner’s son.
Today’s Gospel is especially well timed since today is the first Sunday of Respect Life Month when we Catholics focus on our baptismal responsibility to respect not only human life from conception to natural death but also all created life and all creation.
HUMAN LIFE – I remember my parents saying that they considered the six of us children to be on loan to them from God. They did not own us and they were accountable to God for their stewardship of His children. This fundamental framework of ownership and stewardship flies in the face of our dominant culture which claims that I am free to do whatever I want with my life. Not if my life does not ultimately belong to me and not if I will have to account for my choices regarding the portion of His vineyard (my life) which has been entrusted to me as a steward or tenant.

LAUDATO SI’ – “Praise be to you, Lord” are the opening words of Saint Francis’ Canticle to the Sun and also of Pope Francis’ encyclical of 2015. The Pope teaches that “our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us … This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will…” John Allen has written that the Pope sees the environment as the leading edge of a
contemporary “throw-away culture,” which also sweeps up the poor, the elderly, migrants and refugees, the unborn, and other categories of humanity in its disregard…”
RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP – Each baptized person has a responsibility to participate in the Spirit’s ongoing work of healing our broken world and each citizen has a responsibility to participate in the ongoing process of forming a “more perfect union”. UPCOMING EVENTS
BLESS ANIMALS - Bring your pets for a blessing at 1:00 PM this Sunday, October 4 to celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis loved all of creation as a gift from God to be appreciated and cared for. All animals are welcome — furry, feathered, and otherwise. For the safety of all pets and their human friends, please be sure all critters are properly leashed or caged. We will meet on the parish lawn. In case of inclement weather, the blessing will be cancelled.
CHURCH HALL – In this time of covid, St Ann church hall will soon re-open on a restricted basis for parish groups to meet, following public health guidelines and protocols. If your group is interested in scheduling the church hall or room #1, please contact the parish office. Please note, the kitchen as well as rooms 2, 3, and 4 will not be available. Social gatherings (including birthday, shower celebrations etc.) will not be permitted until further notice.
