Sailing Vessels of
Annagassan and Dunany
in the County Louth
By Michael Coyle
The locally-owned sailing vessels listed hereunder operated from the ports of Annagassan and Dunany, certainly in the years for which records are available, i.e. between 1851 and 1928.
They were mostly employed in the coal trade.
While inward cargoes such as Indian corn, fertiliser, slates, cement, etc were occasionally
carried, it was mainly as colliers that the vessels were employed. Coal cargoes were regularly
brought to Annagassan and Dunany from various U.K. ports extending as far north as Ayr in
Scotland and south as Swansea in Wales. Outward cargoes, when available, were largely round
timber.
Prior to 1851, in fact from quite early in the century, sailing vessels, some of which were
probably also owned locally, are known to have traded, certainly to the port of Annagassan.
Indeed, there is evidence to suggest that possibly coal was being imported at Annagassan even as
far back as the late 18th century. An old lease map of the mill, which was established in 1770, shows a 'coal quay' alongside the tail-race at the rear or seaward side of the mill. The old quay
wall can still be seen. Of the earlier vessels, alas, no trace of them can be found today because
records for the period would appear to be non-existent.
The days of sail finally came to an end in the locality when the last of the great little ships, the
Annagassan-owned schooner, "Lucie", was lost. Driven ashore by a WNW wind, she was
wrecked on the rocks of Ringfad Point in Killough Bay, Co Down in July, 1928. Fortunately, no
lives were lost in her tragic end.
