DESCRIPTION

Graphic Presentation of Design ResearchCollaboration2014In Beginning Designed Objects I, we worked as a class to address a student issue at SAIC; we decided to brainstorm solutions for storage. The first presentation is an encapsulation of the interviews, observations, inspirations, and insights of possible storage solutions at SAIC. With this research our issue is refined and becomes more focused. In the second presentation, I document the physical creation of two of those possible storage solutions while getting feedback from the interviewees; thus, beginning the iterative process of design.

//PROJECT GOAL:

Create better storage solutions at SAIC utilizing

the Human Centered Design framework

3

//CREATE:

Defining our design challenge question, developing prototypes for our solutions, and gathering user feedback.

//HOW MIGHT WE...

...integrate secure and flexible material/supply storage into existing classroom spaces?

//PROTOTYPE: TABLE STORAGE

SUPPLY SIZED:these containers are approximately 18” long, 6” wide, and 18” deep, which can hold your laptop along with other materials and supplies (based on AIADO tables).

STRONG & STURDY:built with metal similar to elementary school desks to hold a large amount of weight and provide protection to your supplies when being stored.

BUILT-IN:these storage containers are built into the the center of the table to provide bulit-in storage and maintain leg room undearneath the table.

OPEN, CLOSE, LOCK:hinges allow for the door to open and close easily with a pad lock closure for security. these locks are similar to diary locks to subtly discourage theft.

TEMPORARY STORAGE:made for storage while working in the classroom and lunch breaks to keep materials and supplies secure, not necessarily for overnight or permanent storage.

//USER FEEDBACK: TABLE STORAGE

STUDENT VOICE: STEPHANIE CHU, ANIMATION DEPARTMENT“I think it would be important to note how wide and maybe even how long the entire table is. Since the lock-ers are organized up and down the table, I feel like there may not be enough space under the tables for people to sit on both sides of the table. I have mixed feelings about the lock. I like that it provides more se-curity but I also fear having to take a key lock with me. It’s not a big issue, I just think there’ll be quite a has-sle if the key is lost or if someone stole the lock… Maybe people could just carry their own lock or the lock could be something like the locks they have on the security boxes in hotels where you can set your own password. Of course, that might be a bit extreme and clunky with technology as it is now.”

DEAN’S OPINION: TIFFANY HOLMES, UNDERGRADUATE DEAN“The table storage notion looks expensive but very efficient. Did you have an idea of budget? Is this relevant to your project?”

MORE INSIGHT: JENNA SEDLACK, DRAWING & PAINTING DEPARTMENT“I am frequently concerned with leaving my laptop out and about when running to get coffee etc. this would allow me to leave my laptop in the classroom without worrying. My sketchbook has ideas that I don’t always want laying around, but am constantly jotting things down in, so being able to securly lock it away within my reach when switching to a different activity would be very conveinent insead of having to walk across the room or all the way to my locker.”

//PROTOTYPE: CHAIR BAGINTEGRATED:this supply bag is made to be thrown over the herman miller chair (in most classrooms) so chair modifications are not needed. there are clips on the sides of the bag to clip to chair for added support. DUO-SPACE:

each side of the chair’s back is used, which allows storage two ways (hanging from the chair and in the chair). more personal be-longings can be stored closer to you and supplies can be stored in the outer pocket.

PORTABLE:the chair bag flips over itself and turns into a backpack so you can carry your supplies to another area easily if needed. a bag clip is attached to the front of the bag to allow for secure portability.

ACCESSIBLE:your supplies will always be close by and accesible since this bag lays over your chair. both pockets feature zippers for easy closure and the bag clip closure and straps are adjustable. a small bag handle is also at the top of the bag.

REUSABLE:made from canvas or jute, the bag will be durable and can be reused similar to a tote bag. it’s a good size for general daily use as well (12” W x 20” H).

//USER FEEDBACK: CHAIR BAG

STUDENT VOICE: STEPHANIE CHU, ANIMATION DEPARTMENT“I love the seat bag! I wonder if that would replace actual backpacks and bags that people use.”

DEAN’S OPINION: TIFFANY HOLMES, UNDERGRADUATE DEAN“The chair bags are a nice DIY idea that offer a lot of flexibility. Have you done any “user testing” with your prototypes? Were users more excited about having a lock (as with the table storage) or were they more ex-cited about the portability of the chair bags?”

MORE INSIGHT: JENNA SEDLACK, DRAWING & PAINTING DEPARTMENT“Having items of monatery value stored so close to me would be very assuring.The concept of a bag that has storage on both the front and back seems long overdue, utilizing all the available space is delightful and seems apt for various sixed materials. I might want a bag made of a more durable material so I could store heavier items.”
