Hearty greetings to all!

It gives us great pleasure and happiness to be awarded yet again, the prestigious Indira Gandhi RajbhashaAward or the year 2010-11. The H`ble President o India Shri. Pranab Mukherjee gave away the award on14th September 2012 on the occasion o Hindi Divas.

We have reached another milestone in successully carrying out short circuit test on 100MVA, 220/132kVauto transormer. This is the highest rating o transormer tested within India so ar, which was hithertodone either at KEMA, Netherlands or CESI, Italy.

In time to come as we are moving towards smarter grid - Electric vehicles are going to play a major role inreduction o carbon oot print. In our quest or a green campus, we have introduced electric vehicles in thecampus that would be ultimately confgured to give back energy to the grid.

Among the plethora o training programs and conerences, the IEEE 10th International Conerence on

Properties and Application o Dielectric Materials (ICPADM) stands out.Its gratiying to see many clients rom countries like Aghanistan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka utilizeour evaluation acilities. This is only a small step in our dream to turn CPRI into a truly internationallaboratory, and we will keep innovating in this quest and request support and eedback rom our stakeholders.

SHORT CIRCUIT TEST ON 100MVA, 220/132KV AUTO TRANSFORMER

The High Power Laboratory (HPL) of CPRI, Bangalore has created arecord in the history of CPRI and India on 24 August 2012 bysuccessfully carrying out a short circuit test on 100 MVA, 220/132 kVauto transformer for M/s Kanohar Electricals Ltd, Meerut. This is thehighest rating of a transformer tested within India so far. Earlier,manufacturers performed transformers rating at KEMA, Netherlandsor CESI, Italy. The next target transformer to be short circuit testedat HPL is 160 MVA, which is likely to be taken up in the near future.

The augmentation of an existing bus bar system and switch yard isunder way after which the capability of the laboratory to test 400 kVtransformers will go up to 120 MVA, 3-phase.

In our endeavor towards Smart Grids, CPRI has procuredtwo electric vehicles that can be charged withphoto-voltaic modules. In case o a grid ailure orrequirement, the vehicles can give back power to thegrid. CPRI has a sprawling campus o about 120 acresand various laboratories situated in dierent locations.These vehicles are a boon or moving around thecampus, making CPRI campus a green campus. It is alsoa process to reduce the carbon ootprint. These vehiclesalso ulfll a long-time request rom our clients. TheDirector General o CPRI inaugurated the shuttle serviceo the electric vehicles in the campus.

On 2 July 2012, Shri N Murugesan, Director General and a team o senior ofcers - Shri B HNarayana, Additional Director; Dr S Seetharamu, Additional Director and Dr R Ramesh Babu,Additional Director visited dierent Tehsils in and around Nagpur (M.S.) to inspect the land orrelocation o Thermal Research Centre (TRC). The team visited sites at Kaldongri, Maligaon,Godhni and Chicholi. Ater completing inspection o the sites, the team had a meeting withthe Divisional Commissioner o Nagpur. The Director General appraised the circumstancesleading to the relocation o the Nagpur unit o TRC. He also explained the need or a largeenough land as the objective is to have a large unit with expanded activities in research andevaluation.

International Conference on Emerging Trends andChallenges in Transformer Technology

CPRI organized an international conerence on Emerging Trends andChallenges in Transormer Technology rom 13 September 2012 to 14September 2012 at Scope Complex, New Delhi. The conerence wasattended by more than 350 delegates, including senior executives o themajor public utilities, equipment manuacturers, academic and researchinstitutions rom India and abroad. The conerence was inaugurated bythe chie guest Shri A S Bakshi, Chairperson, CEA. Shri ManoranjanKumar, Economic Advisor, Ministry o Power was the guest o honor. Inhis welcome address, Shri N Murugesan, Director General, CPRI invitedall the guests and delegates. He explained the positive role played byCPRI in the improvement o quality o transormers manuactured in thecountry. He expressed his happiness about the overwhelming responserom utilities and manuacturers to the conerence.

International Conference on Emerging Trends and Challenges in Transformer Technology (Contd.)

Around 53 technical papers were presented in the conerence ocusing

on new and uture technologies o transormer technology. Altogether,eight sessions were conducted including design, manuacturing, quality,

testing, installation, commissioning, conditioning, monitoring,diagnostic tests, operation, maintenance and feld experience. Separate

sessions or bushings, tap changers and academic sides were alsoprovided. The papers published were well appreciated by the

participants. The conerence activities were reported in the leadingnewspapers in New Delhi and Bhopal. The eedback received rom the

delegates was rated very good. The participants urther requested or

such conerences in the uture too.

In the concluding session, eminent guests shared their views and Shri N

Murugesan, Director General, CPRI delivered the concluding remark.He also thanked the dignitaries or their advice on improving

transormer technology.

Hindi MonthCelebrations

Hindi Week in TRC -CPRI, Koradi

CPRI observed Hindi Month starting on 31 August 2012. Ten separatecompetitions were organized or employees profcient in Hindi and

those with working knowledge in Hindi. Hindi Divas was celebrated on

21 September 2012 and three prizes were given or each competition.Awards were given or working in Hindi under incentive schemes, andor technical articles in Hindi, which was open to all central government

organizations in Bangalore.

ormal inauguration by Mr. D.N. Narasimha Raju IAS, Principal Secretary,

Energy Department, Government o Karnataka, India on July 24, 2012 which

was ollowed by the addresses o Dr. Harry Orton and Pro. Len Dissado. Mr.

N. Murugesan presided over the unction. This was ollowed by a welcome

dinner. In the inaugural speech, Mr. Narsimha Raju stressed the need or

improved inrastructure within the Indian Power Sector and urther heremarked that the ICPADM 2012 is a very timely event or India or this

reason.

The technical program started with Ziyu Liu Memorial Lecture delivered by

Dr. Keith Nelson, Proessor Emeritus at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,

NY, USA ollowed by other plenary presentation by invited speakers.

The contributory papers presented in various technical sessions comprised a

good mix o various topics and were o a high technical standard. It was

pleasing to note that there were a large number o student papers presented

by dierent Universities and by young engineers rom the industry, which

were well recognized and appreciated. Finally, a total o 129 papers were

presented in the conerence 60 papers rom abroad and 69 rom India.Among the 60 papers presented rom overseas countries, 41 papers were

rom China.

On the fnal day, a concluding session was held on July 27, 2012 with a panel

discussion on Future o Dielectrics chaired by Mr. N. Murugesan, Director

General, CPRI and steered by Dr. Harry Orton, Canada. The panelists were

Dr. Keith Nelson, USA, Dr. Tatsuki Okamoto and Dr. Yoshimichi Ohki, Japan,

Dr. Toan Phung, Australia and Dr. Zheng Xioquan. Each panelist gave a fve

munute dissertation on their views o what holds or the uture o dielectrics.

The ollowing question and discussion session saw lively audience

participation.

CPRI organized an R & D Expo o Indian industry rom July 24-26, 2012

coinciding with ICPADM 2012. This included exhibition by nine majorindustries o their latest products & interaction with R & D institutions,

Academicians and Industry personnel.

Inauguration o R&D Expo 2012 by the Principal Secretary to the

Government o Karnataka Mr. D.N. Narasimha Raju, I.A.S. was presided

Workshop on Instrument Transormers Testing as perNational and International StandardsCPRI, Bhopal organized a one-day national workshop on Instrument Transormers Testing as per National and International Standards on 11 August 2012. More than

100 delegates rom various manuacturers, testing authorities, utilities and academic institutions rom around the country, such as BHEL, Vijay Electricals - Hyderabad,

CGL - Nasik, ABB - Vadodara, Laxmi Engineering - Bhopal, Audion Vision - Kolkata, MPMKVV Co Ltd - Jabalpur, and MPPKVV Co Ltd - Indore attended the program.

The event was presided over by the chie guest, Dr Appu Kuttan K K, Director, MANIT, Bhopal. Mr B V Raghavaiah, Additional Director and Unit Head, CPRI, Bhopal

addressed the delegates. Ten technical papers were presented at the workshop. These papers covered the general design aspects o instrument transormers, routine

and type tests, its role in the power sector, verifcation o short circuit withstand capacity o current transormers, ailure analysis and remedial measures and more.

Exposure Program on Test FacilitiesEvery year, CPRI conducts a one-week exposure program on test acilities or power utilities. This year, the week-long event was conducted rom 3 September 2012

to 7 September 2012 on test acilities at CPRI, specifcally or state and central power utilities. Lectures were delivered by senior ofcers who have a vast experience

in their feld o work. Laboratory visits were organized every aternoon or delegates to get frst-hand inormation about the acilities and the need or testing and

certifcation o equipment. Lecture notes and presentations were also produced as proceedings o the program. Fity one engineers rom organizations such as

HPPTCL, MSPGCL, MSEDCL, MPPGL, KPCL, RRVPNL, JDS, BEST, EDTCK, IPGCL, EDGKP, APGENCO and RRVPNL attended and appreciated the exposure program.

Certifcates were distributed to all the participants at the valedictory session, which was on 7 September 2012.

Topics related to reactive power such as principles and importance o reactive power in power systems, fxed and dynamic reactive power compensation,

reactive power planning, voltage stability and its analysis, harmonic flters, development o FACTS devices, etc. were discussed in detail during the two-dayworkshop. Practical examples such as capacitor compensation or the North-Indian region was discussed. Application and working o FACTS devices or electricarc urnaces and wind arm applications was demonstrated to the participants on the real-time digital simulator.

Theprogram was coordinated by Shri NRajkumar, EO-4. Deligate candidatesrom dierent utilities including NTPC

Ltd, Punjab State Power CorporationLtd, Tata Power Co Ltd, MaharashtraState Power Generation CorporationLtd and Rajasthan Vidyut UtpadanNigam Ltd attended the tutorialprogram.

The Power Systems Division (PSD) CPRI,Bangalore has taken up consultancy work withM/s Essar, Hazira. Senior ofcers rom thedivision visited Essar to study the eects oconnecting a 110 km, 400 kV PGCIL line underconstruction rom Gandhar to M/s Essar, Hazira.The visit also involved studying the eect oevacuating power to the steel plant. Moreover,the visit included studying the eect oconnecting the 110 km, 400 kV PGCIL incomingline to M/s Essar, Hazira with the existing 220 kVGETCO incoming lines rom Ichapore andSachin.

Besides Power System Study, the division is alsocarrying out Relay Coordination Studies.Harmonic measurements were carried out bythe Energy Efciency and Renewable EnergyDivision (ERED).

Tutorial Program on Short-Circuit & Switching Test Duty Requirements of MV and HV Switchgears

Conformance Testing for IEC 61850

Laboratory Test Setup Corporate Member

A one-day tutorial program on Short-Circuit and Switching Test Duty Requirements o MV and HV Switchgears was conducted on 24 August2012. There were about 42 participants rom manuacturers, utilities and other organizations. Ater an interactive session, the participantswere taken to the generator building, test control room and test cell. The participants also saw a short-circuit test on a 220 kV/132 kV 100MVA power transormer.

The Utility Automation Research Centre has established a state-o-the-art protocol testing laboratory, which is the frst and only acility o itskind available in the country. The laboratory is equipped with test tools authorized by international agencies. The Substation Automation

Laboratory is accredited by Utility Communication Architecture International User Group (UCA IUG), USA as a Level A laboratory (Level Aimplies independent third party test laboratory). The conormance certifcate issued by CPRI carries UCA and CPRI logos, which are acceptedworldwide. Tests are carried out as per the latest release o UCA test procedures.

IEC 61850 is an open standard or substation automation. The standard defnes rules or realizing interoperability between unctions anddevices used or protection, monitoring, supervision and control in substations. Conormance testing is a process to veriy implementation onIEDs and communication with the external world according to the standard. The laboratory is equipped with tools or conormance testing orIEC 61850 server devices. The laboratory has been unctioning since 2008 and it is being utilized by various manuacturers and developers. At the request o M/s Phelps Dodge International Thailand, a 132 kV,2500 sq mm XLPE cable was type tested in the power cables laboratory.

Short Circuit Test on 630 A, 300 Aand 160 A eeder pillars was carriedout rom 1 August 2012 to 9August 2012 or M/s Panel Tech Co,Aghanistan as per IEC_61439-1&2on behal o M/s UL India Ltd,Bangalore. Mr. Mohammed Aminand Mr Hashmatullah Aziziwitnessed the test.

Test on 275 kV station post insulator orM/s Transystem Continental Sdn Bhd,Puchong, Malaysia was conducted by themechanical engineering division o CPRI,Bangalore.

The High Power Laboratory o CPRI, Bangalorehas tested a 12 kV, 1250A, 31.5 kA, vacuumcircuit breaker o M/s Cooper Power Systems,Bangalore or mechanical endurance test o M2Class as per IEC 62271-100:2008. This is thefrst vacuum circuit breaker to successullycomplete 10,000 mechanical operations asspecifed or M2 Class in IEC 62271-100.
