What is SAGES?

Page 3: SAGES Info Presentation

About SAGES:The mission of Student Allies for Growth and Enrichment in STEM (SAGES) is to assist students at California State University, East Bay in pursuing their academic aspirations and career paths, while also fostering a more personalized experience in higher education through community service. Working with the Institute for STEM Education, SAGES will provide opportunities to explore and prepare for the vast array of professions which involve STEM-educated professionals; members get a glimpse of what they can do with their college degree!

By combining direct involvement in

campus events, professional

development workshops, Pre K-12

outreach and student-faculty

mentorship, SAGES seeks to create

useful, relevant connections between

STEM-focused students and their future

goals.

Designed to be accessible to the

schedules of busy students, SAGES

members will bolster their higher

education with academic and

professional support while also engaging

in a larger effort toward making STEM

education accessible to all!

The Three Areas of FocusSAGES members have the opportunity to volunteer in events which fall within these categories:

Professional Development

Members will have access to professional development trainings and

internship/employment resources offered on and off campus. SAGES student members

will also receive face-to-face communication with local STEM employers, Cal State East Bay faculty and staff, and municipal bodies.

Academic Support & Mentorship

SAGES plans to host a variety of academic support events and student mixers this coming year. By

remaining closely involved with one another, and engaging in campus academic support such as the

Student Center for Academic Achievement, SAGES members will have a more positive,

relevant college experience!

Pre K-12 Outreach

Through programs offered by the Institute for STEM Education and other organizations,

members will receive training and experience working with Pre K-12 students of all levels

and backgrounds, and ultimately assist in the effort to bring STEM education to young

students in the local area.

SAGES Area LeadersEvents for SAGES are coordinated by the Area Leaders, three of the group officers who focus their time on one of the three Areas of Focus. Area Leaders propose and vote on upcoming events, and are a constant resource to all student members.

Members can talk to Area Leaders about scheduling, event details, ideas for new events, and personal/academic issues as well. As Area Leaders, we want to make member experiences as positive as possible; we are here to help you make your participation in SAGES as great as it can be!

Take a look at current SAGES Area Leaders and officers on the Meet our Members page

Our Faculty Advisor: Dr. Danika LeDucOur faculty advisor is Dr. Danika LeDuc, a professor from the Department of Chemistry. She is a vital resource for student members, and is particularly involved in bringing K-12 STEM events to SAGES.

Page 7: SAGES Info Presentation

Student Members:Active members participate in a minimum of three events or workshops per quarter of active membership. Members also attend bi-weekly meetings, either in person or in the case of an emergency, by phone, and attend all mandatory meetings when requested by the Area Leaders.

Student members who complete exceptional involvement in SAGES are also eligible for extra awards to be administered by the faculty advisor,

Dr. Danika LeDuc.

The capstone event for SAGES members is an end-of-year presentation to the Board of Directors at the Institute for STEM Education. Members who have remained active in the group and met all requirements will have the opportunity to present their efforts, experiences and what they have gained from participating in the group. In return, successful members will receive a letter of recommendation and certificate of achievement from the Institute for STEM Education, as well as a fun, end-of-year social event!

It was Mahatma Gandhi who said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service to others.”

How it works:Meeting SAGES member requirements is very simple. Here’s how to do it:

Attending meetings

Members attend 2 meetings per month, which are 1-1 ½ hours long maximum. At these meetings, Area Leaders address current business and discuss and vote on potential events to add to the SAGES Calendar.

Attending Events

Step 1: Check the SAGES calendar. This calendar contains all of the future events with descriptions, dates, times and location. SAGES members will have the SAGES calendar accessible through their horizon email (preferred) or other email account.

● You may also RSVP to SAGES events through the SAGES website Events Calendar page.

● Announcements for events will also be posted on the SAGES Facebook page

Step 2: Send an email to the Area Leader in charge. The Area Leaders associated with an event will include their name and email in the event description. If you RSVP through the website, an email will automatically be sent to the Area Leader in charge.

Step 3: Attend the event! Notify the Area Leader in charge by email/phone the evening prior to the event to confirm your attendance. The Area Leaders can help you with any transportation issues.

Step 4: Document your experience. Send a 2-4 sentence summary of your experience attending the event by email to the Secretary, Cynia Sapp, with the event title and date as the subject. Include any pictures you may have taken at the event that you would like posted to the website. Your response will be posted to the Student Events Blog page.

That’s it!
