NoMachineClientSetupNoMachineisaprogramthatconnectsyourlaptoptoavirtualmachineonthecloudwhereyouwillrunvariousapplicationsduringthehands-onsessions.ThefollowinginstructionsdescribetheprocessofsettingupNoMachineonyourcomputer.TheseinstructionsapplytobothWindowsandMacs.

GettingStarted

1. Gotohttp://nexsci.caltech.edu/workshop/2016/nomachine_key.txtfortheNoMachinelicensekey.Youmayneedtocopytheentirecontentsofthelicensekeyandpasteitintoaplaintextfile(e.g.NotepadinWindowsorTextEditinMacOS).Savethefileasclient.id_dsa.keytoyourmachine.(Thisisthefirststepbecauseyouwillneedtohavethekeyfileonhandduringsoftwareinstallation.)

2. HaveyourassignedAWShostIPaddress,accountusername,andpasswordonhand.Youshouldhavereceivedthisinformationonthefirstdayoftheworkshop.

3. DownloadandinstalltheNoMachineclient(version5.1.26)at:https://www.nomachine.com

StartingtheNoMachineApplication

1. AfterinstallingNoMachine,opentheprogrameitherfromtheStartbutton(Windows)ortheApplications(MacOS)folder.

2. Atthewelcomescreen,clickContinue.

3. OntheRecentconnectionsscreen,clickNewtocreateanewconnection.

2. AttheVerifyHostAuthenticityscreen(notshown),clickYes.

3. Enteryourusernameandpasswordintheloginscreen,thenclickOK.

4. SelectCreateanewGnomevirtualDesktop,thenclickContinue.

5. AfteryouhavecreatedyourfirstNoMachineconnection,subsequentNoMachinesessionscanbeinitiatedsimplybyhighlightingyourconnectionandclickingConnect,whichbringsuptheaccountloginpage.Fromthatpoint,continuebystartinganewdesktopontheAWSComputeServer.

ResizingtheDesktop

1. Clickthesecondiconatthebottom-leftareaofthescreentoresizeyourremotescreen.

2. Clickandholdonawindowcorner,thendragthewindowtothedesiredsize,makingitfairlylargeenoughtoaccommodatepop-upwindowswithinyourdesktop.

3. Ifyoudidn’tresizethewindowinthepreviousstep,youmayselect“Displaythemenupanelasawindow(preferred)or“Displaythemenucoveringallscreen”.

4. Ifyouneedtoresizeyourremotedesktoponceitisrunning,gotoSystem->Preferences->Displaywithinthedesktop.Ifthepop-upmenudoesn’tfitonthescreen,youmayhavetotabthroughandcounttheoff-screenfields.Thelastoff-screenfieldwillcancelanychanges;thenext-to-lastfieldisapplyanychanges.
