today, we announce a programme
to build on our successes since
2005 with Marc Guillemot. Our
Group renews its commitment
to racing with a key focus on the
2016 Vendée Globe. this project
will continue to unify and captivate
all safran employees, above and
beyond those familiar with the
world of sailing. It will allow us
to demonstrate safrans team’s
commitment and professional
know how within the world of
sports We will also continue
to be available to support the
safran sailing team and architects
with our specialised expertise,
technologies and processes, in
our various fields of work. We
are particularly proud of this
characteristic of our sponsorship
project.
What makes our approach
different is that the safran sailing
team and its areas of activity
are expanding. In addition to the
IMOCA programme, for which Marc
Guillemot will gradually hand over
the reins to Morgan Lagravière, we
have committed to provide support
to Gwénolé Gahinet on the Figaro
Bénéteau circuit alongside Guy
Cotten, a French sMe with which
our Group shares both culture and
values.
Our goal is to help these young
skippers as we support our
employees in their development
and professional growth. this is a
crucial issue for safran, more than
30 % of employees were hired in the
last three years, and we must pass
on to future generations the values
of innovation and team spirit that
make our Group what it is today.

since leaving his native island of
reunion, at the age of 16 to follow
a career in sports studies on the
mainland, Morgan Lagravière’s
path has defined himself by
perseverance and consistency.
He is one of the most promising
helmsmen of his generation.
A mAN oF vAlueS
Morgan starts his career with
a number of world champion
titles, and also the title of French
national junior champion. In 2008,
this earned him a place on the
French Olympic sailing team,
and he epitomises their three
core Olympic values: excellence,
friendship and respect. these
values are perfectly aligned with
safran’s own, where performance
is inextricably linked to the ability
to work as a team.
selected from 50 competitors to
defend the colours of the Vendée
on the Figaro Bénéteau circuit,
Morgan became French solo
sailing Champion in his second
season of racing.
FRee ANd RigoRouS
It makes perfect sense for Morgan
to make a move towards the
IMOCA class, the ultimate solo
offshore sailing class. people that
know Morgan, both on dry land
and at sea, remark on his free spirit,
curiosity and desire to share in
team victory - even when racing
solo. Whilst his primary motivation
is performance, he holds on to his
experience as a sailing instructor
with his need to explain, support
and share information. Morgan is
one of those sailors whose core
principles include rigor, freedom
and spirit of adventure. to add to
this, he is an aviation enthusiast
- holding a private pilot license –
which reinforces the links between
safran and the young skipper
What do you identify with in Safran’s
culture?
m.l. i knew a little about the company,
but it was whilst working on my
application that i had the opportunity
to look into it more thoroughly. all i
found out about Safran, the business,
the culture and way of looking
at sailing sponsorship has only
strengthened my motivation. also,
i am very familiar with the aviation
world: my grandfather was a fighter
pilot and my partner works for airbus
in making of composite materials.
So my two greatest passions meet
today. i am especially looking forward
to sharing with Safran supporters to
show the development of the imoca
prototype and in its participation in
major ocean races.
What does a race like the vendée
globe mean for you?
m.l. if you participate in offshore
racing, you naturally turn your gaze on
the Vendée globe.
it is the ultimate adventure competi-
tion, and i am very proud to be among
the skippers who have the privilege of
participating in the next race. to follow
in the footsteps of a sailor like marc
guillemot and to fly the colours of the
jewel in the crown of france’s leading
industries, is both an honour and a
personal challenge.
You will start the 2016-2017 race at
the helm of a new boat. How do you
feel about that?
m.l. to have the privilege of par-
ticipating in the development and
construction of their future boat, with
a company like Safran is really motiva-
ting. i intend to totally throw myself
into it!

in the gauge will help to offset what
should be an additional weight.
the new measurement rules have
had an impact on the weight of non-
ballasted boats. once ballasted, they
will be lighter with equal strength
because you are now allowed to have
more outlying ballasts.
however, ever since we built our first
boat the focus has been on making
it as light as possible for a maximum
power.

How does the evolution in the imoCA
measurement favour new builds?
with this new rule, we believe we
can make more reliable boats, but
also faster ones than currently exist.
Keels, masts and hydraulics should
be standard. this is a constraint that
we accept given the importance of
reliability. although the standard
elements are generally heavier than
those made for prototypes, changes

issues that remained outstanding
were clarified. “The times for the
design, building and reliability
tests are relatively short for the
new boats to meet the rules in time
for the start of the next Vendée
Globe” notes Gérard Le page,
CeO of safran sailing team. “But
from last spring, we began studies
based on assumptions about how
the rules could change. We are
ready to start the construction of a
new 60 in early 2014.” Meaning we
can think about working with the
VpLV / Verdier designers.
to be launched at the end of
2014, or the start of 2015. the
Safran Sailing team wants the
new imoCA prototype to be
homogenous and appropriate for
solo sailing : easy to handle, light
and as streamlined as possible.

Le page. “We expect to have a
really competitive advantage.”

What is your opinion of Safran?
it is significant for both guillaume
Verdier and myself to feel that a
company such as Safran has put their
trust in us. working on the first design
drawings of Safran, which was our first
imoca 60 boat, it was new for both
the company and us. this project has
woven even stronger ties and means
we have made developed plans and
the “future imocas” should be faster.
“this new boat is a particularly important project for us.
It is a little like our pet project with our favorite partner.”

following an epic round the world
race, which sees him, among other
exploits, going to the rescue of
fellow competitor Yann eliès liying
injured on board his monohull. Marc
wins the transat Jacques Vabre in
2009 with Charles Caudrelier and
becomes IMOCA World Champion.
In 2013, he is second in the Jacques
Vabre (with pascal Bidégorry),
after challenging the record for
crossing the north Atlantic in July
2013, having won the round Britain
IMOCA race in 2010.
“over the past 8 years with Safran
and its employees, we have built a
relationship that is unrivalled in the
world of sailing sponsorship. more
than 100 engineers in the group
joined in to lend their expertise in
composite materials, modeling,
hydraulics or electronics. these
“technology transfers” largely explain
why the project has generated
such levels of commitment from
Safran employees, which is always
very motivating for a skipper. we
must also remember that we were
pioneers in choosing naval architects,
guillaume Verdier and Vincent
lauriot prévost to draw the imoca
60. my role this year will be to help
morgan to be calm, confident and
determined at the start of the Vendée
globe in 2016.”

marc guillemot will race on
the new new york - barcelona
translatlantic in tandem with
morgan lagravière followed by
the route du rhum 2014 race. for
8 years, Safran and skipper have
been in leading positions in the
imoca class.
In 2005, Marc Guillemot, having
established a strong track record in
multihull racing, joined the Safran
monohull project. From the outset,
he ranked among the leaders in
the IMOCA and positions Safran
in a good starting place within the
category. Marc came second in
the World IMOCA Championship in
2007 and 2008. He started 2009
with an impressive opening act!.

gwénolé gahinet joins the skip-
pers to closely monitor the figaro
beneteau circuit. he will fly both
the Safran and guy cotten flags
for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Despite not having known his
father, Gilles, very well, who was a
legendary figure in French sailing
– he has won two Figaro races
single-handed – Gwénolé Gahinet
follows in his footsteps. With an
engineering degree from ICAM in
nantes, Gahinet joined the VpLp
naval architecture firm in Vannes,
where he spent three years. In
2011, after 8 months of intensive
preparation, he led off the start
of the Mini transat. He finishes
by leading the one design series
from the outset. It is with the same
tenacity he now focuses on the
Bénéteau Figaro circuit, the best
breeding ground for solo racing.
“i have been dreaming about the
bénéteau figaro circuit for a long
time. after the mini transat, this is the
natural next step to take for any sailor
who wants to do offshore racing. in
that we have embarked on a two year
project, we have time to do some
good ground work and set ambitious
objectives. i am very proud to have
been selected by Safran and guy
cotten. in their respective fields, these
two companies represent what is best
in french industry: they embody the
values of innovation, commitment
and team spirit which i identify with
completely.”

as the skipper of the imoca

accumulated tens of thousands of
sea miles on the planet’s oceans
over the last seven years. marc will
continue as the Safran skipper in
2014 to pass on his knowledge and
experience to morgan lagravière,
to whom he hands the reins in 2015
for the 2016-2017 Vendée globe.
despite his young age, morgan
became a brilliant figaro sailor in
just three seasons. gwénolé gahinet
has a lot to learn, whether in terms
of strategy and sail adjustments or
fatigue management.
marc guillemot : “wearing two
hats as both the Safran skipper and
morgan’s sports and technical coach
is something really new to me, and
is something i am really enjoying. it
is very rewarding to be involved in
seeing such a young and talented
skipper benefit from my offshore
knowledge: morgan can count on
me. and i will also follow closely the
progress of gwénolé, whom i know
well…”
morgan lagravière : “marc and i
represent two generations of sailors:
mine is undoubtedly more focused on
sailing as a high performance sport,
with all that it entails in areas such
as fitness preparation. marc, with
his perspective and vision of offshore
sailing can really bring a lot to the
table. on the imoca 60 circuit you
could not ask for a better tutor, so we
should be a very efficient crew on the
two handed races. i will also be very
happy to pass on everything i learnt
on how to optimise performance on
the figaro bénéteau.”
gwénolé gahinet : “i have known
marc for a long time and was very
young when he first took me out to
sail. he is one of the people who have
really given me a passion for offshore
racing, technique and boat design.
he will be able to give me very sound
advice. it will be truly valuable to
have the benefit of morgan’s figaro
experience; he is among the best in
this discipline. he is especially good
with boat tuning for pure speed. he
will without a doubt be able to help
with all those little things that help
make the difference on the water…”
